Canada first pulls out of fighter jet discussions, then hours later decides to go ahead with meetings
Canadian officials abruptly pulled out of meetings with aerospace companies planned for the Paris Air Show to kick off the Liberal government’s fighter jet competition but then a short time later changed course and reinstated the proposed discussions.
Companies were told Friday their meetings, set up for next week, had been cancelled. But shortly about the Ottawa Citizen asked Public Services and Procurement Canada why the discussions had been scuttled, companies started receiving word the -
Marc Methot likely to be exposed in expansion draft as Senators can't deal Phaneuf
The Ottawa Senators may have to pay a price if they want to keep defenceman Marc Methot.
Unable to trade blueliner Dion Phaneuf before the National Hockey League’s roster freeze went into effect Saturday, Senators general manager Pierre Dorion is expected to hold talks with Vegas Golden Knights GM George McPhee to see if there’s a way to entice that franchise not to select Methot, who will likely be left unprotected for the expansion draft.
Dorion’s hands were tied after Phaneu -
Tri and tri again … Carp's Joanna Brown is back in her triathlon groove
Four years ago, Carp’s Joanna Brown was a rising star on the triathlon circuit. Podium finish after podium finish at huge world-class events hinted at a bright future.
Over the next couple of years, however, Brown sputtered, falling short of the promise she had displayed. Hampered by a variety of injuries — foot, leg, back — and lacking motivation, she considered stepping away from a sport she’d been involved with since age 14.
Refocused and re-energized, though, the 24-y -

Judge in Cosby sex assault case declares mistrial as jury deadlocks again
NORRISTOWN, Pa. — Bill Cosby’s trial on sexual assault charges ended in a mistrial Saturday after jurors failed to reach a unanimous decision in a case that helped destroy the 79-year-old comedian’s image as “America’s Dad.”
Jurors deliberated more than 52 hours over six days before telling a judge they couldn’t agree on whether “The Cosby Show” star drugged and molested Canadian Andrea Constand at his suburban Philadelphia home in 2004. The -
Bold, controversial entrepreneur, builder Robert Campeau dies at 93
Robert Campeau, the small-town boy who built up huge swaths of Ottawa and elsewhere before his business reach exceeded his grasp in the 1980s in a headline-grabbing corporate battle that wiped out U.S. retailers Allied Stores and Federated, has died in an Ottawa hospital.
He was 93.
Campeau arrived in Ottawa in the 1950s from Chelmsford, near Sudbury, almost penniless with rudimentary English skills and a drive for success.

Ottawa Champions blank visiting Cuban team in opening game of series
The first thing the Ottawa Champions did on Friday was announce that the Can-Am League baseball team had “parted ways” with pitching coach Miguel Gomez and replaced him on an interim basis with pitcher Phillippe Aumont.
Later, the Champions went out on the field and defeated the visiting Cuban National Team 3-0, with Daniel Cordero pitching a four-hit shutout before a crowd of 2,874 at RCGT Park.
The victory improved the Champions’ regular-season record to 9-18.

Senators will open 2017 pre-season schedule against Maple Leafs
The Ottawa Senators will open the 2017 pre-season schedule with a Battle of Ontario.
If the Senators want to get a good idea of where they stand going into next season, there’s no better measuring stick than a home-and-home series against the Toronto Maple Leafs to open the National Hockey League exhibition schedule.
