Among opinionated music critics, unanimity is rare. But the Citizen’s Peter Hum, Aedan Helmer and Lynn Saxberg agreed on one must-see show at the TD Ottawa Jazz Festival: Hudson.
An all-star band with lots of crossover appeal, the quartet consists of guitarist John Scofield, keyboardist John Medeski, bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jack DeJohnette. It plays the NAC Theatre Sunday, June 24, at 9 p.m. Its new, debut album ticks off many musical boxes, with the band indulging in gritty ex

Project aims to help shatter healthcare's leadership glass ceiling
At a time when women outnumber men at medical schools and make up 80 per cent of the health workforce, the number of women in health leadership roles makes a stark contrast.
Women hold relatively few leadership jobs in healthcare in Canada and head fewer than 20 per cent of hospitals. The Ottawa Hospital’s 28-member senior leadership team, for example, contains more than twice as many men as women, including its CEO Dr. Jack Kitts, which is not unusual.

Ontario reviewing court ruling on abortion information
The Ontario government is reviewing a court ruling that struck down a law preventing information about abortion services from being made public.
“The government is currently reviewing the decision and considering next steps,” said a spokesperson for the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services, which oversees the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
Last week, an Ontario Superior Court judge declared the section of FIPPA that excludes information about abortion s -

Court hears two tragic tales as ByWard Market killer sentenced 14 years
Kayla Sullivan never got the chance at the reconciliation she so desperately wanted with her young daughter, who she named Justice.
That chance was robbed from her, said her family in powerful court testimony, by her killer Peter Herauf, who was sentenced to 14 years on Friday after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the October 2016 slaying.
Sullivan, 30, was killed after a botched small-time pot deal. She took about a gram from Herauf without paying, and walked away to rejoin her friends outsi -
Hundreds of rare and obscure films now streaming on new Ottawa Public Library service
Revanche, a little-known German-language film about guilt and revenge in Vienna, is the surprise top choice of Ottawa Public Library patrons using the library’s new streaming video service of classic, hard-to-find movies.
Maybe viewers are lured by the director’s “tense, existential, and surprising portrait of vengeance and redemption” — or maybe it’s the picture of the naked woman on its cover — but the Oscar-nominated Revanche is the most streamed film -
Singer-songwriter Tony Turner explores life after 'Harperman'
In some respects, Tony Turner can divide his life into before and after segments.
Before Harperman and after Harperman.
Turner, a soft-spoken Ottawa singer-songwriter and former public servant, kept a low profile in this town until his Harperman ballad, a sing-along broadside at then-PM Stephen Harper, went viral two years ago.
“It really did change my life and I had no idea that it would,” Turner says. “I think what Harperman did was cause me to think I should be writing songs -

The train is coming: LRT stations taking shape as Belfast berm removed
Ottawa’s LRT builder has nearly reached the half-way mark of its busiest year of construction.
Work by the Rideau Transit Group is underway at all 13 Confederation LRT Line stations and the 12.5-kilometre rail line that connects them.
Close to nine kilometres of track in either direction has either been laid or is in the process of being laid along the mainline and more than one-third of the overhead wires used to power the trains have been installed. Thirteen Alstom Citadis light rail veh -

Police union severs ties with police brass over 'double-standard' of officer treatment
The rank-and-file Ottawa police union has severed ties with the police executive after what its president says have been months of double-standards and refusal to treat officers fairly, the Citizen has learned.
That fraught relationship was further fractured by recent serious criminal allegations against senior police officials.
“The ongoing relationship between the (union) and the (police) executive is unworkable,” Ottawa Police Association president Matt Skof wrote in a Frida -
Editorial: Ontario should open up on pot planning
With pot legalization about a year away, we can conclude that the Ontario government is working on a plan. Or at least a plan for a plan.
And yes, the “Legalization of Cannabis Secretariat” exists and, apparently, is busily holding meetings. With whom, it won’t say. But not the public. Not yet, anyhow.
This doesn’t inspire much confidence. Other provinces are puffing along nicely: New Brunswick is holding public hearings this summer; Quebec’s convening a -
Ottawa research explores the role of culture in reaction to traumas
What matters more: nature or nurture, genes or environment?
It’s always been a big question for science, but in recent decades it has become apparent that it’s also not an either/or question. Biology can actually be changed by experience and, at the same time, culture has a role in how it plays out.
Carleton University and the Mental Health Research Institute at The Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre have launched a new partnership to probe the role culture plays in mental health and -

Egan: Desperate Ottawa man turns to Germany for cancer care — 'It's not a bad tooth'
Ontario’s Ministry of Health is preparing for clinical trials on a promising treatment for pancreatic cancer — a ray of hope against a dark prognosis.
But Hy Elmas, 69, does not have the luxury of time. “It’s not a bad tooth,” says the retired property manager, nearly pounding his meaty fist on the kitchen table, birds chirping outside on a sunny day in Centrepointe.
“It’s cancer and it kills.”

Senators will open pre-season against Maple Leafs
The Ottawa Senators will open the pre-season with a Battle of Ontario.
If the Senators want to get a good idea of where they stand going into next season, there’s no better measuring stick than a home-and-home series against the arch-rival Toronto Maple Leafs to open the exhibition schedule.
The club will play two exhibition games at the Canadian Tire Centre while they’ll play a home game in O’Leary, P.E.I. against the New Jersey Devils on Sept. 25 as part of the Kraft Hockeyvi -

Reevely: Celebrity prof advises, 'See if you can take the social-justice warriors out at the top' at Carleton Place Tory event
Kathleen Wynne is a radical leftist who wants to tear down the things that made Ontario, Canada and the West great, University of Toronto psychologist Jordan Peterson told a crowd assembled by Tory MPP Randy Hillier in Carleton Place on Thursday night.
“If she had a shred of integrity, she’d resign,” Peterson said to applause, from a riser in a corner of a second-floor ballroom at the town arena.

Sahi: How fear of peace bonds affects Canadian Muslims
In Phillip K. Dick’s science fiction story The Minority Report, the concept of “pre-crime” becomes the new way law enforcement functions, as the NYPD finds a way to detect crimes before they’re even committed.
Fast forward from when the story was written in 1956 to Canada today, and you might see more resemblance than you think. Just about all that you’d have to do is replace the word “precog” – Dick’s characters who predict crimes – wi -
Suspended Ontario driver blows three times the limit, gets fast trip to Gatineau court
Lucerne Boulevard in Aylmer is a 70 km/h zone, so when police heard the engine of a BMW coming toward them far too fast they got the radar ready and clocked the car at 156 km/h.
It was 2 a.m. Friday. The driver, a 30-year-old man from the Ontario side of the river, showed “multiple signs” of being extremely drunk so they gave him a test and recorded about three times the legal level of alcohol in his system.
That’s when the flurry of charges began.

Trudeau confirms LRT funding — but city transport projects, not just LRT, will need serious cash from upper-tier governments
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed on Friday the federal government’s intent to fund the city’s $3-billion blueprint to extend LRT in four directions by 2023.

Take a walk on the wet side at the 9th annual Water Garden Tour
Ian Wilson knows how to build a natural escape – his gorgeous water garden surrounds half of his home and attracts visitors from all around. Folks often stroll through his property, take a seat under the wisteria and let the sounds of nature take over. They become entranced by the array of peonies, daylilies, irises, gladioli and azaleas. Some even ask him for gardening advice. His garden will be one of 11 in the Water Garden Tour by the Greater Ottawa Water Garden Horticultural Socie -

Gormley: What happens when nice guys fail to protect our rights?
A leader who brags about sexually assaulting women, such as Donald Trump, or who used to be a member of the KGB, such as Vladimir Putin, or who has confessed to serial murder in a manner decidedly bereft of the repentant tone one would normally expect of a confession, such as Rodrigo Duterte, or who is even just a little cold and a little mean to people, such as Margaret Thatcher or Stephen Harper, is easily imagined pushing civil liberties aside when those liberties stand between themselves and -

Indigenous centre key to decolonization of Canada
Re: How to honour (and not honour) indigenous Canadians, June 9.
Recent word of the possible designation of the former U.S. embassy building at 100 Wellington St. as the site of a proposed national Indigenous centre has been provocative to many.
This is as it should be, for the whole point is to decolonize, Indigenize and unsettle the national capital in a manner that is truly profound. There could be no stronger statement of Indigenous aspiratio -
