Nicole and Amine Nayel have become the human faces of the court delay crisis.
The Barrhaven couple spent Monday in Ontario’s court of appeal listening to prosecutors press their case for a new trial for the man accused of killing their son, Fouad Nayel.
It was the latest stop in a five-year legal odyssey that began with their son’s sudden disappearance in June 2012, a desperate five-month search that took them from Ottawa to Petawawa and back, only to discover their son’s

Multimedia show to welcome people to Lyon station in dramatic fashion
A short time ago in a galaxy not so far away, a crew of workers excavating downtown Ottawa’s LRT tunnel made a surprising discovery near Lyon station.
Several storeys below Queen Street, they found a glimmering wall of light. Frequencies generated by the human body soon began to materialize, taking on larger-than-life shapes. Beams of colourful light bounced off walls while puffs of smoke filled the dark cavern. Music pulsed and patterns danced. As the workers descended deeper, another fla -

LeBreton Flats 'super library' planning held up by federal decision
Federal delays are slowing down the City of Ottawa as it attempts to finalize plans to build a new main municipal library with Library and Archives Canada.
The news was in a memo to council on Wednesday from planning general manager Stephen Willis, who told politicians that the city can’t do much more until the government signs off on the scheme for a $168-million joint facility on LeBreton Flats.
“As city and library processes and approvals are dependent on the federal governme -
Garrioch: Depth on defence is a strength for the Senators
There is no reason for the Ottawa Senators to worry.
This isn’t the end of the world.
No, it’s not ideal that veteran defenceman Dion Phaneuf wouldn’t waive his ‘no move’ clause to be exposed to the Vegas Golden Knights in next week’s expansion draft so the club can protect Marc Methot, but there’s absolutely no reason for the Senators to panic because they likely knew this scenario was coming.
Though Vegas GM George McPhee would willingly accept an asse -

Reevely: Catholic schools can't push Catholicism on students now
Catholic schools will find it tougher to lean on students to get Catholic educations, thanks to a human-rights case over how a girl in central Ontario was treated when her parents wanted to get her out of religious instruction.
The point of any religious schooling is to reinforce the inseparability of intellectual and spiritual formation. Whereas the point of the secular pluralism that defines most of our society is that within certain broad limits, you get to decide for yourself how to live. We -

Editorial: It's a long road ahead for fixing court delays
A Senate committee has laid out dozens of recommendations for how the federal and provincial governments can address serious court delays. If everyone agrees to follow them, the problem may be solved.
But not quickly. Nothing, short of a climbdown by the Supreme Court of Canada, will immediately stop some people who face serious criminal counts from walking free as charges against them are stayed due to the long delays they face in the justice system.

Chris Neil and the Senators head their separate ways

Glavin: On gender equality, Trudeau gets the basics right
It is tempting to dismiss the “feminist” foreign-aid makeover outlined by International Development Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau last Friday as world-stage virtue signalling, or a sop to Justin Trudeau’s rather too fervent foreign admirers, or a shell-game exercise in political cynicism and brand-management opportunism.
Justin Trudeau’s Liberals spend less on foreign aid than Stephen Harper’s Conservatives did. We’re spending about half what we should be to ma -

Council approves plans to separate roads from rails in Barrhaven, fund asset repairs
The city needs to find millions of dollars to separate rail from roads in the southern suburb now that the Barrhaven Rail Safety Program has council’s endorsement.
The first step is to free up money in the 2018 municipal budget, possibly in the $3-million range, to order environmental assessments for the crossings at Woodroffe Avenue, the southwest Transitway, and Fallowfield, Merivale and Jockvale roads.
The next step is to convince the upper-tier governments and Via Rail to help cover th -

Award costs, reduce sentences when trials delayed unduly, senators say
OTTAWA — A Senate committee is urging the Liberal government to come up with a different consequence for cases that take too long to make their way through the courts.
The committee says it brings the justice system into disrepute when such cases end in a stay of proceedings, especially when the allegations involve murder or sexual assault.
The Supreme Court’s groundbreaking Jordan decision last summer set out a new framework for determining whether a criminal trial has been unreason -

Denley: Ottawa's garbage plan is a real stinker
The approval of a new, privately operated landfill and recycling centre in Ottawa’s east end has created predictable, and not invalid, concerns from neighbors, who worry about truck traffic and smell.
The thing is, the new landfill is at the intersection of Highway 417 and Boundary Road. There isn’t a whole lot else around there and the city needs sites for the garbage produced by its businesses and institutions. One could argue that what’s happening in the east end makes sense
