Ilnicki loves being a Redblack
With his parents Brian and Wendy at TD Place watching, Alberta Golden Bears running back Ed Ilnicki took a handoff and scooted 21 yards during the Ottawa Redblacks’ 30-29 pre-season win over Hamilton last Thursday.
It was a great moment for Ilnicki, who the Redblacks selected in the seventh round of this year’s CFL Draft, and for his mom and dad who had come from Edmonton to watch their kid play.“I barely had to do a thing — the way the defence blitzed and the offensive l -
Ottawa's tent caterpillar outbreak may be just the beginning, forester warns

Redblacks have new Owl connection
Back when Henry Burris was slinging the football for the Temple Owls, Avery Ellis and Eric Lofton were just kids.
Fast forward 20 years or so. Burris, a three-time Grey Cup champion and Ottawa Redblacks hero, is retired from the CFL — now a co-host on CTV Morning Live.
Ellis and Lofton, who also played for the Owls, are in Redblacks training camp, trying to earn roster spots with the regular season a bit more than a week away. Soon after arriving in Ottawa, they got their photo taken with -

Paintball company offers reward in search for 'horrible person' who shot players with marbles
An Ottawa paintball company hopes a cash reward will help it to catch the “horrible person” who, according to organizers, loaded a paintball gun with marbles instead of paint pellets at one of its signature tournaments.

Reevely: Jan Harder spits fire at Jeff Leiper over chief planner's retirement party: 'Next time … shut it!'
Coun. Jeff Leiper should “shut it” rather than observing that a lot of property developers went to the retirement party for Ottawa’s urban-planning boss, the chair of city council’s planning committee says.
Barrhaven Coun. Jan Harder gave Leiper the advice in a late-evening email last week — one she sent far and wide at city hall, to all their council colleagues and all those councillors’ assistants, to city manager Steve Kanellakos and senior staff in the pla -

Paintball tourney halted after 'horrible person' shot players with marbles
A weekend paintball tournament was marred by an ugly incident when one “horrible person,” according to organizers, loaded a gun with marbles instead of paintballs.
Commando Paintball owners Marie Longtin and David Pitts issued a statement condemning the action, saying they will implement “extra precautions” for future events, including an on-site police presence. Organizers are now offering a $1,500 reward to anyone who can identify the guilty player.

Critic of 'predatory' publishing returns with scathing message
Jeffrey Beall, who was the first to identify and study “predatory” science publishers, is back after a five-month silence, with criticism for universities as well as fake publishers.
Beall, a University of Colorado librarian and researcher, created the widely-known Beall’s List of thousands of shady websites that imitate academic journals but publish anything for money.
Then, around New Year, he went silent. His website disappeared and he wouldn’t say why, although a -
Should edible cannabis products be regulated with changes to pot laws?
The federal government should regulate edible cannabis products at the same time that it legalizes dried pot, plants and cannabis oil, the city’s health unit says.
Ottawa Public Health wants support from the health board to tell the federal government to develop regulations around edible cannabis products now rather than waiting until after the legalization comes into force, which is expected to happen by July 2018.
In a report for the health board, the unit cites a 2016 study and a 2 -

Today's letters: Old U.S. embassy should have been portrait gallery
Wrong decision to abandon portrait gallery idea
Re: Mayor welcomes plan for indigenous cultural centre, June 7
I am disappointed to hear that the fine building at 100 Wellington St. is to be used to focus on only one small segment of the Canadian population. The option of a National Portrait Gallery would not be so restrictive. It would show art in all media by all Canadians.
A National Portrait Gallery would show images of all First Nations, the early explorers, the first European immigrants, o -

Cohen: What is an ambitious Canada's purpose?
Is Canada an “essential” nation in the world in 2017?
It is flattering to see ourselves this way, as Chrystia Freeland, the minister of foreign affairs, suggests in her recent address to Parliament. To think the world cannot get on without us. To assume that if we did not exist, the world would have to invent us.
Essential, though, to whom? To the United Nations, as one of 193 members, which rejected our last appeal to sit on the Security Council? To NATO, where we’re a reliabl -
