When women flee abusive relationships, they often need more than just a new roof over their heads. Police protection, legal advice and emotional and financial support are crucial to rebuilding their lives and that of their children.
On Monday, the federal government stepped in to give dozens of organizations in Canada the funding to make some of those key resources more available.
Harmony House, a second-stage women’s shelter, is one of six non-profit organizations in the Ottawa

Reevely: Board gets its $18.3M reward for closing some schools

She pledged the money in the sweltering library of Agincourt Road Public School near Baseline and Merivale roads. The school is air-conditioned but the ventilation struggled to keep up with the heat outside. Kids in classrooms sat under ceiling -
Supreme Court Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin to step down Dec. 15
OTTAWA — Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin is stepping down from the Supreme Court of Canada in December after 28 years on the court, including almost 18 years as chief.
McLachlin, 74, is the first woman to hold the top job on the high court and is also Canada’s longest-serving chief justice. She will leave Dec. 15, about nine months before her legally mandated retirement on her 75th birthday in September 2018.
She was sworn in as a justice of the Supreme Court in 1989 and was appoint -
Macfarlane: McLachlin leaves behind a confident Supreme Court
It seems somehow appropriate that Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin, the longest-serving chief justice in Canada’s history, will retire, slightly earlier than required under the law, during the year the country celebrates its 150th anniversary. An institution in her own right, McLachlin has had an immense impact on both the Supreme Court and Canadian law.
In the time McLachlin has sat on the court (she was first appointed in 1989, and elevated to chief justice in 2000) the litany of issues -
Father, son bike for cure to Duchenne muscular dystrophy
Andrew Sedmihradsky completed a 600-kilometre bike ride on Monday to raise money for research that might one day allow his six-year-old son, Max, to ride alongside him.
Max suffers from Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a progressive muscle-wasting disease that mostly strikes boys. Max’s Big Ride raises money to finance research into what is now an incurable, fatal disease.
“The whole ride boils down to giving Max the opportunity that other boys have,” Sedmihr -

EGAN: The dead boy for whom a light still shines, 44 years on
One of the best columns Dave Brown ever wrote was about a dead little boy, a curious insurance agent and a bright light in a graveyard, which a mother burned against a dark world for 44 years.
It will not suffer from re-telling.
(For those not old or lucky enough to know Brown’s work — he retired the daily column in 2003 — it was a collection of human-interest, street-level pieces that were easily the most widely read in the history of the newspaper.)
First, some news. The Otta -
Senators' Dion Phaneuf has a decision to make on his 'no move' clause
Dion Phaneuf has a decision to make and the clock is ticking.
Will he or won’t he?
National Hockey League sources have confirmed a weekend report that the Ottawa Senators have asked Phaneuf, an alternate captain, to waive the “no-move” clause in his contract so he can be made available in the expansion draft for the Vegas Golden Knights.
By doing that, the Senators would be able to protect veteran blueliner Marc Methot from the expansion draft, for which protected lists must be -

LRT subcontractor alleges builder hasn't paid $1.5M
An LRT subcontractor claims the company overseeing construction owes more than $1.5 million for work done on the City of Ottawa’s largest-ever infrastructure project.
HC Matcon (HCM) filed a statement of claim in court last week alleging it has been short-changed by the Rideau Transit Group (RTG) and the consortium’s partner companies.
The City of Ottawa is named as a defendant, too, because some of its LRT lands are subject to a construction lien claim by HCM.

Ontario offers public servants contract extensions, 7.5-per-cent raises
TORONTO — Ontario is offering public servants a four-year contract extension with 7.5-per-cent raises, which, if ratified, would avoid possibly contentious bargaining before the next provincial election.
The Ontario Public Service Employees Union workers would get 1.5 per cent on July 1, then one per cent on Jan. 1, 2019 and another one per cent every six months for the life of the deal. The approximately 35,500 workers and correctional staff represented by OPSEU are employed across the pu -

Sign of the times: Crowdfunding for scientific research
Eric Fisher is a biochemist who was headed for a career researching heart disease when he abruptly changed course. Now, instead of doing his own research, he has created a crowdfunding platform to help other scientists raise money to continue their work at a time when money for science is scarce.
Labfundr, as the platform is called, is a sign of the times for science funding in Canada.

Williams: Liberals barely pass on defence review
If I were a professor and had assigned my graduate students the preparation of a new defence policy and had received the government’s response from one of my students, I would have given this student a C or C+ at best.
I was pleased to see its focus on the men and women in the military and their families. I was pleased to see the government convey a vision of a military that is more capable and more engaged in world affairs. I was also pleased to see the government back up this vision with -
Quick, can you draw the Senators' logo from memory?
Well, now that the NHL season is officially over, it’s time to start working on your fundamentals again.
Like drawing.
Twitter user @wtyky came up with a fun game for Sens’ fans: Draw the team’s logo from memory.
It’s A LOT harder than you think.
Here’s the original post:Let's play a game. Try to draw the Sens current logo completely from memory. I'll start… pic.twitter.com/PRRRSTAOYu

Humane society warns of 'high-rise syndrome' with cats as weather heats up
The Ottawa Humane Society is warning cat owners to keep an eye on their pets as the weather heats up and windows are being opened in an effort to cool down apartments.
Open windows in high-rise buildings are a hazard to felines whose curiosity may cause them to slip and fall. The humane society said every year as temperatures rise, it sees an influx of seriously injured cats who’ve fallen from open windows or balconies.
Two such cats are in the care of the humane society right now &md -
Dawson: The SIU won't talk about reforms to how it does its job
The director of the Special Investigations Unit won’t talk to me.
That sounds petulant, but hang on a minute. In April, a year-long review of civilian oversight of Ontario policing concluded, and it made 129 recommendations for improvements. Among these were many directed at upping transparency among the agencies involved. The SIU, which investigates serious injury, death and sexual assault at the hands of police, has historically operated in an opaque manner, offering very few detai -

Spencer: So much for open government under the Liberals
For the second year in a row, a Canadian prime minister attended the annual parliamentary press gallery dinner, and for the second year in a row, Justin Trudeau was charming and funny. Clearly, the man is accessible, in contrast to the previous prime minister, who avoided such events with fierce determination.
But as with many things Trudeau, symbolic shows of openness haven’t entirely been matched by the actions of his no-longer-new government. Days after the merriment among journalists a -
