Jesse Levine doesn’t forget his Ottawa roots.
A tennis broadcaster (Sportsnet), professional coach and a talent scout for Nike, Levine flew home early from the French Open in Paris to be inducted into the Ottawa Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
Levine, 29, was guest speaker at the “Breakfast of Champions” at the Jewish Community Centre on Sunday. The event awarded top Jewish athletes in the area and also served as a sendoff for the 14-member Ottawa contingent heading to the 20th Mac

Pitcher Raydel Sanchez leads Ottawa Champions to road victory
Raydel Sanchez led the Ottawa Champions to a 4-2 victory against the host Quebec Capitales in a Can-Am League baseball game on Sunday afternoon.
Normally a reliever and making his first start of the season, Sanchez (1-2) went 5 2/3 innings, allowing just one earned run on seven hits. Despite being outhit 11-5, the Champions made the most of their opportunities, with Gustavo Pierre scoring two runs and Tyler Nordgren driving in a pair.
After ending a six-game losing streak with a victory on Satur -

All aboard for Redblacks final preseason game against Alouettes
The Ottawa Redblacks plan to crowd their portion of the Percival Molson Memorial Stadium sideline with bodies.
For their second and final Canadian Football League pre-season game Thursday at Montreal, the Redblacks will load into buses and hit the highway early in the day, then return after the game against the Alouettes.
As they did last Thursday in a 30-29 victory against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, the Redblacks will try to get everybody into the game. With active rosters to be set at 46 by Satu -
Introducing Kevin Pierre-Louis: the Redblacks' Kevin Pierre-Louis, that is
OK, right away … Kevin Pierre-Louis is not THAT Kevin Pierre-Louis.
He wasn’t selected in the fourth round of the National Football League draft, he didn’t play for the Seattle Seahawks and he didn’t go to Boston College.
However, the Kevin Pierre-Louis who joined the Canadian Football League’s Ottawa Redblacks a week and a half ago is a very good football player. A hard-hitting safety at Colorado State, he was nickname The Hitman.
The funny thing is that there&rsq -

Safety in numbers: First Nations communities look to analytics to reduce risk of their most vulnerable
For indigenous women and children most at risk of violence, there is safety in numbers.
At least that’s the hope of an innovative indigenous-led project to harness the power of big data to first identify, then protect indigenous communities’ most vulnerable members.
Too many indigenous people “have fallen through the cracks of society,” Ontario Regional Chief Isadore Day said at a forum on data analytics last week at Ottawa’s Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health.

Science of spring: When I see an antler fly
Our series on The Science of Spring is winding down but not quite finished. Today we talk to a biologist about a little fly that lives its entire life on discarded antlers in the forest.
Now that’s a true specialist.
No one even knew the antler fly existed until it was discovered and formally named around 1995 by Russell Bonduriansky. Today Chris Angell, a master’s student at the University of Ottawa, is studying them in Algonquin Park.
We found him at a wildlife research station the -

Canada's double first day of summer
Our series on The Science of Spring is winding down but not quite finished. Today we look at the date when summer arrives. It’s not as simple as it sounds.
Canada has two official first days of summer this year — a double start to patio season, perhaps as compensation for the horrible spring.
The reason is in the stars.
We often say that summer begins on a certain day, but in fact it is more precise than that. It begins at the exact moment when the sun is at its most northern point o -
Egan: 'Then I'm waved over at gunpoint' — Hec Clouthier's dishy political memoir
Hector (Hec) Clouthier was a maverick politician, a small man with a big hat and bigger ambitions.
Thus has he written a maverick’s memoir, full of horses and guns, fightin’ and cussin’, grudges and treachery — great stuff to spill around the campfire.
Clouthier, now 67, was the memorable MP for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke from 1997 until 2000, but his political career spanned nearly 30 years, concluding with a failed run as an independent in 2015. Unmistakable in his sign -

Liberal government misleads on Afghan mission – return to Afghanistan being considered
Last month NATO announced it was looking for personnel from its alliance members to help train troops and police in Afghanistan. All members received the request.
So I asked Harjit Sajjan’s spokeswoman Jordan Owens if Canada was considering the request or if it had been declined.
“We are not tracking a request,” came a one-sentence email from Owens.
What did that mean? Had a request already been rejected?
Owens didn’t bother to answer the second question asking for clarif -

The Capital Builders: Mackenzie King and Gréber remade Ottawa
As rumours of war grew in Europe in 1937, Paris hosted a grand exhibition. In the shadow of the great pavilions of the International Exposition of Art and Technology in Modern Life, the partnership that built the Ottawa of the 20th century was born.
The great powers menaced each other across the grounds on either side of the Eiffel Tower, itself a relic of the World’s Fair in 1889. The Nazi pavilion featured a tower capped by an eagle clutching a swastika, ready to battle in -
