Human trafficking has traditionally been difficult to prosecute. Its victims have usually suffered extensive trauma; many have addictions. It means they often have imperfect memories, which makes it difficult for courts to rely on their testimony. What’s more, victims are often afraid to testify against their former traffickers.
One federal study found that out of 53 cases in which human trafficking was the most serious charge, only about a third (30 per cent) resulted in a conviction.

A murky, misunderstood hell: On the front lines of human trafficking in Ottawa
For Virginia, the end to her three-month nightmare came on a highway near Cornwall when she leapt from a moving car toward freedom.
It was September 2015, and Virginia — not her real name — had spent much of the past three months being ferried between hotel rooms and private homes in the National Capital Region, to have sex for money.
The man who claimed to be her boyfriend had convinced her that by working temporarily as a call girl she could help them build a future together: to bu -
ByWard Market tent installation to offer 150 'new perspectives'
For Arif Jaffer, riding on Via Rail is like riding the Hogwarts Express.
“I romanticize everything,” said Jaffer, 23, who is originally from Toronto and works as a civil servant in Ottawa.
“I essentially wanted to be the brown Harry Potter, that was my end-goal in life.”
One train ride in particular was a turning point in his life, but he is waiting to share that story at next week’s Trophy event.
Jaffer is one of 150 storytellers who will be sharing their life expe -

Ottawa Police charge man with impersonating a dentist

Ottawa Police have arrested a man for pretending to be a dentist. 29-year-old Omar Anwar appeared in court today to face several charges. Remember that movie "Catch me if you can?" He's no Leonardo DiCaprio, but police say his ruse was elaborate and ... -
'Not a fortress': Mayor, police chief outline Canada Day security on Parliament Hill
Security on Parliament Hill and throughout downtown Ottawa must strike a fine balance between keeping the public safe and letting them rejoice in the largest Canada Day celebration in the city’s history, Mayor Jim Watson said Friday.
The RCMP, Ottawa police, the city’s emergency and protective services department and others have been at work for more than a year on a plan to make the Hill as accessible as possible for as many Canadians and visitors as possible, while recognizing the -
Hoyeck: The abortion debate in our secular state: Why the two sides can't talk to each other
Last month, Attorney General Yasir Naqvi promised a provincial law setting an anti-protest “bubble zone” around abortion clinics, to be passed in the fall. The announcement followed mounting controversy around regular protest activity outside Ottawa’s Morgentaler Clinic.
The predictable effect of Naqvi’s promise has been to reignite the perennial debate about abortion here in Ottawa. What is so striking about this debate, more than any other, is the extent to which each s -
Reevely: Jack MacLaren unbound, and never happier
Jack MacLaren is two weeks free of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario and the happiest he’s been in years, he says.
“You know where I am? I’m out here on Tom Black’s deck, looking out and waiting for the soybeans to grow,” he says over the phone on Friday, the breeze blowing into the handset.
Black’s the president of the Ontario Landowners Association, the rural-populist movement MacLaren led before he went into politics and became the MPP for Carle -
Updated: Ottawa man faces fraud, ID theft charges after allegedly posing as dentist
An Ottawa man is in custody for allegedly posing as a dentist, although police can only confirm he has worked as a dental assistant at two Ottawa clinics.
Police received a call from the National Dental Examining Board of Canada (NDEB) that someone was attempting to take dental exams on May 27-28 with falsified credentials. In order to write the exam, applicants must have a degree from an accredited dental school.
The investigation revealed that the man allegedly accessed the university cre -
Politics matters: The world, the kids and the watchdogs
When Justin Trudeau grabbed a bite with Barack Obama in Montreal this week, it was far more than a couple of friends catching up over crab cakes. Beyond the frame of the immaculately staged and cheery photo the prime minister tweeted out Tuesday night, the world order was in convulsions.
Trudeau was knitting together a network of G7 countries who could pressure the United States to stick with the plan on climate. His foreign affairs minister was declaring Canada’s newfound love for “ -
The word on the street is yum — local food trucks rallying for summer 2017
After a clammy start to the street food season, Ottawa’s trucks and carts are in high gear for the summer of 2017. They’re cooking up everything from wood-fired pizza and ceviche to churros and gelato on city streets and at rallies in ‘burbs like Barrhaven and Bells Corners. -

Strange bedfellows – Boeing and Bombardier file complaints about U.S. military contract
In a new twist on their aerospace rivalry, Bombardier has joined Boeing to protest the awarding of a U.S. military aircraft contract to another company.
The challenge comes as Bombardier finds itself the target of a Boeing complaint over the Quebec firm’s sales of commercial aircraft in the U.S.
Boeing has accused Bombardier of receiving Canadian government subsidies that allowed it to sell its C-Series passenger planes at cut-rate prices. That, in turn, set in motion the Liberal governmen -

Marc Seaman, an executive with Microsoft who has been chair of the Shaw Centre for four years, is the new chair of the board of the National Capital Commission.
He has been appointed for a five-year term, replacing Russ Mills, who retired earlier this year after 10 years in the job.

Farmers 'weeks behind' after rain swamps Eastern Ontario lands
Corn should have sprouted by now all over Eastern Ontario. Soybeans should be planted, greenhouse tomatoes should be red. And south of Smiths Falls, Ellie Renaud should have hay cut and baled for her beef cattle.
But the flooding rains came instead, and weeks of cool, dampish weather have left fields like soaked sponges, unable to dry.
“We are weeks behind,” Renaud said Friday. “You have to tell the insurance company by the 15th of June if you think you’re going to have a -

Not the right home for an indigenous cultural centre
Dull grey hoardings still surround 100 Wellington St., almost two decades after the beaux-arts-style building was abandoned by American diplomats in favour of the behemoth that now looms over the ByWard Market. But sometime this month – likely around National Aboriginal Day on June 21 – the federal government intends to finally, formally announce a new use for the empty structure across from Parliament Hill: a centre dedicated in some way to Canada’s indigenous people -

City waiting until next term to decide on licensing for payday loan companies
The city will wait until after the next municipal election to decide if it should license payday loan companies, which traditionally charge enormous fees to those who can’t get bank loans or credit cards.
Bylaw chief Roger Chapman wrote an analysis on what the city could do to regulate the businesses, responding to a council direction from April 2016. The analysis was recently sent to council’s community and protective services committee.

Redblacks kicking hero Brett Maher possibly returning to team
Sounds like former Redblacks kicker Brett Maher, an expansion-season home-opener hero, is coming back to Ottawa.
A report by 3 Down Nation’s, Drew Edwards said Maher, who kicked for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2016, has signed with the Redblacks.
All that could be standing in the way of an announcement is paperwork being finalized and filtered through the CFL.
It will make the final two weeks of training camp heading into the CFL regular season interesting. The Redblacks have two kickers &n -

After wet weather, trimming the sports fields grass a tall order for city staff
The sight of stacked-up arena boards on city fields in April was the first sign of trouble.
Ottawa area fields were so wet and soft from a record rainfall, city staff couldn’t get their trucks onto park grounds until late April or early May. Workers are still trying to catch up while managing some 800 sports fields around the city.
Fields that normally open for recreation on May 1 were off-limits until May 15.
“People look forward to the May 1 opening all year long, so that is never -

Louis Riel opera takes on new meaning during time of truth and reconciliation

“They could have chosen a story that was much idealized, that celebrated Confederation, that was a kind of sea-to-shining-sea national dream, up-with-people kind of tale. And they chose one of t -
