The revelation that a man is alleged to have drugged, raped and videotaped at least 15 women connected to the ByWard Market bar scene is unsettling to victim assault experts but not surprising given “abusers have patterns”.
The accused serial rapist — Phillip Wilson, 33 — is being tried on 45 criminal charges, including sexual assault, aggravated assault and administering a noxious drug. The rapes are alleged to have happened in 2014 and 2015 during which a man preye

Jonathan Pitre’s recovery took a giant leap forward Wednesday as doctors approved his discharge from hospital — ending a difficult and miraculous two-month stay at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital.
Pitre, 17, continues to see new and hopeful signs that his stem cell transplant has started to power the repair of damage wrought by his blistering skin disease, epidermolysis bullosa (EB).

New collection of Canadian and indigenous art is National Gallery's largest ever
In what is being hailed as a new “way forward” for the National Gallery of Canada, a new permanent collection will display nearly 800 works in the largest group of Canadian and indigenous art ever presented at the gallery.
The new Canadian and Indigenous Galleries represents the first major gallery transformation at the National Gallery since the building’s inauguration in 1988 — a project that took years of planning and nine months of construction ahead of its June 15 gr -
Barrhaven: Committee OKs pricey plan to separate roads, rail
The proposed Barrhaven Rail Safety Program, a pricey but vital plan to separate roads and rail lines in Barrhaven, received the blessing of council’s transportation committee on Wednesday.
It could cost $430 million to build overpasses or underpasses where roads currently cross train tracks in five locations, but councillors know the work is essential if the city wants to prevent another tragedy like the September, 2013 collision between an OC Transpo double-decker bus and Via Rail tr -

Meilleur pulls out of languages job, cites 'controversy' around nomination
OTTAWA — The Liberals’ contentious choice for official languages commissioner has withdrawn her candidacy, saying her nomination has become a “controversy.”
In a letter addressed to the heritage minister, Madeleine Meilleur said she didn’t think she would be able to do the job properly given the uproar since her name was put forth by the government.
“As you know, my nomination has become the subject of controversy,” she told Melanie Joly in the letter da -

Reevely: Madeleine Meilleur should have been a senator, not languages commissioner
Madeleine Meilleur should have been a senator, instead of watching her nomination to be Canada’s official-languages commissioner smash on the rocks.
The former Ottawa-Vanier MPP and doyenne of Eastern Ontario francophones is an unexpected casualty of Justin Trudeau’s aversion to partisanship in a legislative body that has historically needed it to function.
A place in the Senate is what Meilleur wanted, after a year of semi-retirement from politics. But she’s too much a Liberal -

Glavin: America abandoned the world under Obama – not Trump
As an exercise in eloquently sugar-coating the facts of the shattered world order and Canada’s precarious place within the ruins, Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland’s speech in the House of Commons Tuesday was a masterwork of tact and sobriety.
Running in excess of 4,000 words, here’s the short version: We’ve had a good run. Everything we’ve taken for granted for the past 70 years is gone. Don’t panic.
Not panicking is of course always wise counsel. Mu -

Denley: OC Transpo is slow and unpleasant, hence ridership woes
OC Transpo ridership was down again in the first three months of this year. City staff are unsure why, although they suggest the shortfall could be due to external factors such as population, employment numbers, gasoline prices and weather.
Curiously, Transpo has not yet told the public what the actual reduction is, saying the numbers are still being analyzed. We do know that revenue for the quarter was $3.9 million less than anticipated. Were that kind of shortfall to persist throughout the yea -
