Marcel Monette said he’s added new security features around his Vanier home.
It’s the kind of thing you do after there have been five suspicious fires within a few blocks of your house in the past two months and police suspect the same person might be responsible for all of them.
“There is obviously a real sick person going around,” said Monette, a day after the latest early morning fire razed a home down the block at 309 Montfort St. The fire caused an estimated $450,000

Toronto officers won't be charged in 2016 shooting death of Ottawa man
The province’s Special Investigations Unit has concluded that no charges are warranted in the death of an Ottawa man shot eight times by police in Toronto on March 4, 2016.
Devon LaFleur, 30, was wanted by police in Ottawa for an armed robbery earlier that day and had left the city to head to Toronto in an SUV stolen from his sister to meet a friend. Toronto police, who had been warned that LeFleur was headed to Toronto and were waiting for him, shot LaFleur eight times on Bayview Avenue i -
Dead suspect wanted in Vaughan when shot by police

Reevely: Old Ottawa South church plans condos by Rideau Canal
A zoning quirk could let an Old Ottawa South church shore up its finances by building a six-storey condominium overlooking the Rideau Canal.
Southminster United overlooks the canal just west of the Bank Street Bridge. If you’re skating toward Dow’s Lake on a winter afternoon, you can see its stained glass glowing in the sun.
The church and the stained glass are staying. But what’s going, conditional on city council’s approval, are a two-storey addition at the back and a s -

Elgin Street's newest landmark named for $5M NAC donors
The signature element of the National Art’s Centre’s $110.5-million facelift will be named the Kipnes Lantern after an Edmonton couple gave $5 million to the arts organization.
The hexagonal lantern faces the National War Memorial and will serve as the centre’s new Elgin Street entrance. Four sides will be clad in glass that’s enabled with LED technology so it can transform into a giant digital screen and livestream events from inside the building or across the country.

Bids for Canadian Surface Combatant delayed until mid-August
The Canadian government and Irving Shipbuilding Inc. announced Monday they were extending the submission deadline for the Canadian Surface Combatant request for proposals.
Bidders had previously complained they didn’t have enough time to recruit Canadian firms for the surface combatant program.
The deadline was originally June 22. That has now been delayed to at least mid-August, noted a statement from the federal government.
“As per the RFP, bidders can submit draft bids for re -
Carling Travelodge owner files high-rise residential proposal for hotel property
The company that owns the west-end Travelodge Hotel has filed a blueprint to overhaul the property into a high-rise residential complex, adding to the long-term transformation of a short stretch of Carling Avenue.
The first phase of the redevelopment would knock down the existing 13-storey hotel building, which is currently vacant, and parking structure to make way for a 20-storey building on Carling Avenue and a nine-storey building along Archibald Street.

There's an Ottawa-area festival for just about everyone this summer
First come the tulips, then come the tunes.
It’s seasonal ritual in the nation’s capital: As the city’s Tulip Festival comes to a close, the bloom begins for another season, one filled with live music.
Beginning with Westfest, this first weekend in June, the calendar is packed through to September with nearly continuous live music on open air stages from east to west.
Perhaps it was the unusually long spring, helped along by the hometown hockey team’s inspiring playoff ru -

Antiques: Outstanding Maritime table could fetch over $7500
Q. This table has been in my family for some time and my parents always talked about it being special and made by a famous maker. It is now with me in Ontario but my family roots are from the Maritimes. It’s in very good shape except for some missing bits of wood on the front corners. It’s about 122 cm wide (48 inches) without the end little leaves raised up. I’m wondering if I have my information correct and this is the table they were talking about. Thank you.

If there was a 5,000-strong pro-Trump rally, Ottawa police didn't hear about it
Organizers dubbed Saturday’s event the Million Canadian March.
“5,000 Canadians march in support of Trump, against Liberal Trudeau administration,” reported the right-wing Breitbart news in a post on Saturday shared more than 34,500 times.
The text of the article revises that to “up to 5,000” rallied on Parliament Hill.
“March against Trudope and his tyranny,” said the march’s Facebook page, which lists 504 people as having attended. “This ma -

Old ideas become new again
Re: Can’t vote, can’t contribute, June 3
I think I agree with Shannon Gormley’s views on the necessity of preventing foreign money and influence on elections. I certainly appreciate her embracing so vigorously concepts such as citizen control of the body politic, national sovereignty and national identity.
I admit to having been a little shocked to see these arguments being offered now. I have gotten used to seeing such concepts, once foundational to -

Nicholas: It's looking doubtful that the new library will be iconic
When Ottawa residents were promised a new central library, many had visions of an iconic new structure. This hope is now rather doubtful.
The city is on a path that will lower our chances of having a new architectural landmark.
Whereas cities around the world have run open competitions for their library designs, Ottawa seems to be going in the opposite direction: not having any competition. Without any competitive pressure to obtain the most striking design, Ottawa may get a building that is sim -

Fire destroys abandoned farm house near Manotick
A fire investigator has been called in to find out what caused a fire that destroyed an abandoned farm house on Nicolls Island Road near River Road Sunday evening.
Fire crews got multiple 911 calls reporting heavy black smoke and flames and found the home fully engulfed.
They established a “collapse zone” around the house because the integrity of the structure was weakened by the fire and went into defence mode to stop the flames from spreading.
The smoke was billowing out -

The opioid crisis: Watch how Ottawa paramedics save lives with naloxone
“Sir, can you hear me? Hello? Sir?”
Nothing.
Paramedics Richard White and Colin Stiff find the man limp and totally unresponsive after bystanders called 911.
It’s an imagined scenario, but one increasingly familiar to first-responders in this city.
The man’s barely breathing, his pupils are mere pinpoints and he can’t be roused by a shake. His pulse is racing. His blood sugar is normal, ruling out hypoglycemia, and there’s no signs of a head injury, another co -
The Gargoyle: Boozy night morphs into awkward meetings and intense committees
It’s a busy week on the Hill, as the government outlines the future of the military, tries saving the economy and faces off against an oddly timed court ruling.
But first, a look at Saturday night’s press gallery dinner.
Scheer shines for press gallery
The annual nerd prom brought cabinet ministers, past and former premiers and Supreme Court justices – oh, and scads of journalists – to the Museum of History for a boozy evening of light-hearted jabs.
The Gargoyle saw Prim -
'It is a failure on many levels': Ontario failing to adequately support the elderly, critics say
With thousands of people on waiting lists for long-term care beds in this region, you might expect a new long-term care home in Ottawa to bring some relief.
But the Ontario government’s move to approve a new facility in the city’s west end without adding a single new bed to the mix is drawing criticism and frustration from doctors. It offers a glimpse, they say, into how the province is failing the elderly and not dealing with a growing health-care crisis.
“It is a failure on m -

Capital Facts: The heartbreaking and heroic story of the Hill's Sir Galahad statue
In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.
The statue of Sir Galahad, welcoming people to Parliament Hill, actually tells a touching but heartbreaking Ottawa story of heroism and sacrifice. It pays homage to Henry Albert Harper, a young civil servant who drowned trying to save Bessie Blair, who fell through the ice -
Today's letters: Hypocrisy on pot and the chief should get to fire bad cops
Hypocrisy on pot vs. alcohol
Re: Medical journal blasts Liberals over pot age limit, May 30
While I understand the Canadian Medical Association Journal’s concern for the potential harmful effects of marijuana consumption on the “young” brain, I also find the criticism of the government’s plan somewhat hypocritical.
If marijuana consumption is harmful, why single it out when the same young person can legally obtain and consume alcohol at around the same age as the proposed -
