Peel back the layers of the multimillion-dollar real estate deals and you’ll find that Ottawa entrepreneur John Ruddy is a football man at heart.
He had little choice. As a boy, John’s family lived a few doors away from Ottawa Rough Riders wide receiver and Hall of Famer Bobby Simpson. John’s own father, John Ruddy Sr., played professionally for the Ottawa Trojans in the 1940s, a halfback known to his teammates as “Johnny.” Partly because the son was so proud of his

Memorial golf tournament honours murder victim Brandon Volpi
Danny Volpi, who lost his son to an act of heroism in 2014, hopes a golf tournament in Brandon’s honour will go a long way to helping others in the future.
“He was helpful, he always helped the weak,” Volpi said.
“This is why I want to do this to remember his name. He died as a hero.”
Brandon Volpi, who attended St. Patrick’s High School, was slashed and fatally stabbed in front of Les Suites Hotel in downtown Ottawa on June 7, 2014, the night of his prom. He -
Preview: Children of God musical tells story of Canada's residential schools
When Corey Paquette, a 30-year-old playwright of Oji-Cree heritage, was growing up in Northern Ontario, the subject of residential schools wasn’t talked about.
But with his new play, Children of God, Paquette is ensuring the subject will not only be discussed but even be sung about.
The groundbreaking musical, which incorporates indigenous language into its music, tells the story of residential schools from the perspective of one Oji-Cree family. It premiered in mid-May in Vancouver, where -
Scoffield: Politics matters – Scheer, Lyme and softwood lumber
It was an intense week of repudiation on Parliament Hill.
U.S. President Donald Trump entrenched — with gusto, and to Canada’s consternation — his inward-looking approach to global affairs by stridently announcing his intention to pull out of the Paris accord to prevent climate change.
Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard shattered the back-burner status of constitutional truce by launching national discussions meant to deal with his province’s long-standing concerns about b -
Depth of Canadian talent likely to make roster decisions tough for Redblacks coaches
Defensive co-ordinator Mark Nelson says the arrow is pointing up on the quality and depth of Canadian talent on the field for the Ottawa Redblacks.
Case in point: Defensive end John Biewald, a local kid who made play after play during his Canadian Interuniversity Sport career with the Western Mustangs and is now looking great in a Canadian Football League environment.
Said Nelson: “I like him. He just does everything right … he can do a lot of things. Guys like t -
City hall blog: City preparing to unveil art for the Confederation Line
We’ll find out what the public art will look like on the Confederation Line LRT by the end of July.
That’s the information in a letter this week from the city clerk and solicitor in response to an access to information request earlier this spring.
Since we haven’t heard much about the art component on the LRT line, I thought it would be useful to see what’s up. I’m told there will be a public unveiling ceremony before the end of July, so the city doesn’t have -

Editorial: Death shows a plan is needed, now, for asylum seekers
It was entirely predictable – not that it diminishes the tragedy – that someone was going to die trying to illegally make their way from the United States into Canada.
And so, a woman was found dead last week in a ditch near the Manitoba border. Mavis Otuteye, age 57, died of what the police believe was hypothermia; her body discovered a kilometre from the border between Minnesota and Manitoba, and authorities believe she was attempting to enter Canada. An official autopsy on O -
City must spend millions more to maintain non-sexy assets
The overall physical condition of the city’s $42-billion asset portfolio hasn’t changed over the past five years, but the city is still short huge amounts of money required to keep roads, pipes and buildings in decent shape.
Politically, spending millions on repairing assets isn’t nearly as sexy as opening new recreation centres or libraries.
Still, council needs to be mindful of keeping taxpayer-owned property up to snuff.
While the city forecasts it will spend $125 million an -
Receiver Tori Gurley happy to be with Redblacks after 2016 'mistake' with Bombers
Tori Gurley, whose full first name is Norristorius, almost became an Ottawa Redblack after his shocking release from the Toronto Argonauts last season. Almost. And we’ll go back to the first name later.
After talking contract with the Redblacks in October, Gurley figured the opportunity might be better for him with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, a decision he now admits was a mistake.
“It was a learning experience,” the 29-year-old receiver, who signed with Ottawa a month ago, said -

The Gargoyle: Parliament Hill schmooze-fest has flacks and hacks in a tizzy
You know money in politics is a hot topic when it almost derails the pre-summer party schedule.
Flaks and hacks will gather Saturday for this year’s press-gallery dinner, but its organizers have been losing sleep ever since someone made a last-minute call to the office of Ethics Commissioner Mary Dawson.
Since the 1870s, Hill journalists have invited parliamentarians and bureaucrats as “dates” for a boozy evening to work their sources.
Employers generally pick up the $113 tick -

The story in quotes: Here’s how the players saw news events this past weekI am building a modern, inclusive Ontario PC party — one where it doesn’t matter where you’re from, who you love, where you worship or how much money you make.— Ontario PC Leader Patrick Brown on May 28, punting Jack MacLaren from the PC caucus -
Reevely: Provincial Tories' future at stake in Ottawa nomination fight: riding president
Ontario’s Progressive Conservatives won’t convince the province’s voters the party deserves power unless they do something about the disastrous vote to decide who’ll carry their banner in Ottawa West-Nepean, according to the president of the riding association there.
“If you cheat, and allow cheating, when choosing candidates, how can you possibly be trusted to run a government that has integrity?” Emma McLennan alleged in one of a pair of letters to the party -

Minto Field turf replacement bid would bleed $1.96M city parkland fund
The only bid for a rip-and-replace turf job at Minto Field would put a huge dent in a city fund reserved for parks which could serve residents across Ottawa.
As of April 30, which is the most recent tally available, the citywide cash-in-lieu of parkland account has about $1.96 million available, after other spending commitments are taken into consideration.
The city received one bid to replace the artificial turf at Minto Field. Centaur Products quoted a price of $1,178,330 before tax. -
Robots, Ride for Dad and the revolution in prostate surgery
There’s a foot-long incision on Terry Cairns’ stomach, a reminder of his prostate cancer surgery in 2001.
“Even though it’s healed, my surgery still shows, “ said 66-year-old Cairns, who on Saturday will join as many as 2,000 other motorcyclists for the annual Ottawa Telus Ride for Dad.
If Cairns had been diagnosed today, he said he would consider the robotic da Vinci surgery system at the Ottawa Hospital to be his top choice.
“It was actually a five-hou -

Good dogs, paramedics and more: Our picks for Doors Open Ottawa
Penny Bowden woke up one morning when she was 43 and realized she could no longer see.
“It’s quite frightening when you’ve had your sight your whole life,” said Bowden, who lives in Ottawa.
Bowden, now 52, was diagnosed with Stargardt’s retinal dystrophy, which rapidly progressed. She became legally blind in both eyes within a year. Bowden said there is no cure or treatment for Stargardt’s, a disorder that causes progressive damage to the centre of the e -

Help wish Jonathan Pitre a Happy Birthday!
Jonathan Pitre turns 17 today and the Twitterverse has been full of birthday wishes.
Pitre is receiving treatment at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital.
Pitre, who received a stem cell transplant from his mom, Tina, has shown signs of remarkable physical recovery during the past week. Although his breathing remains laboured, his kidney, liver and gastrointestinal problems have all improved. What’s more, the wounds inflicted by his blistering skin disease, e -
Crowley: Minimum wage hike will harm vulnerable workers
My very first job – other than delivering newspapers – was as a busboy at The Old Spaghetti Factory in Vancouver’s Gastown. The hourly minimum wage was $1.50.
Had someone asked me then if the government should force the restaurant to pay me more, I would have been all for it. After all, who among us believes we get paid enough for what we do?
But what I learned later in life is that the price of things (including the price of an hour of my labour, which is what wages are) is no -
