Reevely: New bilingualism bill for Ottawa won't make capital any more bilingual
Ottawa will have to have a bylaw on offering city services in English and French if a new bill proposed by Ottawa-Vanier MPP Nathalie Des Rosiers passes.
The city already has one, so that’s pretty much that.
The demand to make Ottawa officially bilingual is stronger among the city’s francophones than most Anglos realize: it comes up in every election in Ottawa-Vanier and Orléans, usually in all-candidates’ debates where questioners tend to be baffled that something so ob -
Promising treatment for preemies' lungs gets funding boost
Dr. Bernard Thébaud has spent a career treating the tiniest preemies at CHEO for lung disease.
Treatment and care of babies with bronchopulmonary dysplasia — underdeveloped lungs that become damaged from ventilation and long-term oxygen use — has shaped his career as a neonatologist. It has also driven world-leading stem cell research by Thébaud and colleagues that could prove to be a game-changer for babies with what is the most common complication of preterm birth.

Ottawa man charged with accessing child porn
An Ottawa man faces a child pornography charge after a seven-month investigation that led investigators to his home computer.
In late November 2016, the National Child Exploitation Coordination Centre forwarded the Ottawa police’s Internet Child Exploitation Unit reports it had received from the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children’s tip line.
These reports, submitted by Microsoft, indicated that an IP address in the Ottawa area was noted to have uploaded images of chil -
No evidence Bordeleau showed preferential treatment, police board finds
There’s no evidence Ottawa police Chief Charles Bordeleau showed preferential treatment when it came to suspending officers, the Ottawa Police Services Board has concluded.
The board had requested a briefing from Bordeleau in the wake of allegations about “inconsistencies” in the evidence of senior police officers in the case of an acting staff sergeant who was facing criminal charges recommended by the province’s Special Investigations Unit. The charges followed an explo -
Jonathan Pitre makes remarkable advances in his recovery
Jonathan Pitre will celebrate his 17th birthday this week with a most astonishing gift: hope.
The Russell teenager has staged a remarkable physical recovery during the past week in his fourth-floor room at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital. Although his breathing remains laboured, his kidney, liver and gastrointestinal problems have all improved.
What’s more, the wounds inflicted by his blistering skin disease, epidermolysis bullosa, have started to show s -

The legend of Pedro: Panda mascot answers the call from the Ottawa sports hall
He has been kidnapped, held for ransom and was the symbol of a fierce tug of war between rival football factions.
Pedro the Panda, blood-stained and laden with signatures and mini-pennants, has witnessed some sights in his 62 years on earth. Now he is coming out of hiding to signal another chapter. The panda bear, the original prize for Panda Game glory between the University of Ottawa and Carleton University, is among the featured guests Friday evening at the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame dinner a -
Separated rail crossings in Barrhaven area would cost $430M
It would cost $430 million to separate roads and railways at five locations in south Ottawa, according to a report published Wednesday.
The deadly crash between an OC Transpo double-decker bus and a Via Rail train on Sept. 18, 2013 in Barrhaven prompted a study by the City of Ottawa and Via on grade separated crossings on Woodroffe Avenue, the Transitway, Fallowfield Road, Merivale Road and Jockvale Road.

Sajjan says Boeing is not a trusted partner as Super Hornet dispute escalates
Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan suggested the U.S. aerospace firm that wants to sell billions of dollars worth of fighter jets to Canada can no longer be considered a trusted partner.
Although he stopped short of cancelling the Liberal government’s plan to purchase 18 Super Hornet fighters from Boeing, Sajjan said the U.S. firm has damaged its relationship with Canada.
Boeing has complained to the U.S. government that Canadian aerospace firm Bombardier is receiving subsidies, which in turn, -

Lyme disease slow to spread in Outaouais, health officials say
The infected ticks that carry Lyme disease are present but still fairly rare in the Outaouais, says the region’s health authority. But it still urges people to take precautions against being bitten.
“Although the risk of contracting Lyme disease in the Outaouais region remains low, the Public Health Directorate reminds the population of the region that simple prevention measures can make a difference,” says an announcement from the Centre intégré de santé -
Glavin: Anti-Semitism creeps up ranks of the Labour Party
It started last July.
In an unguarded, hot-microphone remark following an interview on Sky News, the former Conservative cabinet minister Ken Clarke was overheard to chortle about the “fiasco” of the Conservative leadership race – an event triggered by the resignation of Prime Minister David Cameron, which was itself triggered by the surprise win of the “Leave” side in last June’s British referendum on membership in the European Union.

You're not imagining it: This is Ottawa's wettest spring ever
More than a foot of rain in the past two months has washed away all kinds of weather records in Ottawa.
Wettest May. Wettest April and May combined. Wettest spring. (The weather office defines spring as March 1 through May 31.) Rainiest first five months of the year.
And most of these are records not by a millimetre, but by huge margins.
May (measured through Tuesday) had a record of 175.6 millimetres of rain at the Ottawa International Airport, more than double the average of 86. Records there -

Reevely: Ontario Liberals have already spent their surplus and then some: budget watchdog
The Ontario government has balanced its budget, if you squint and cock your head in exactly the right way, but it’s already promised to spend its way back into a deficit after the next election, the province’s budget watchdog says.

Mark Norman’s replacement makes his public debut
In early March, Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Jon Vance announced on Twitter that Lt.-Gen. Alain Parent would assume the job as acting vice chief of the defence staff. His first day on the job was May 30.

Parent highlighted some key themes the Liberal government is interested in promoting, -
Don't panic over small ridership drop in early 2017, OC Transpo head says
People shouldn’t panic about a small decrease in OC Transpo ridership in the first quarter of 2017, Ottawa’s transit head says.
