ART SEEN: Inuit artist Elisapee Ishulutaq dies at 93 at home in Pangnirtung
via vancouversun.comTwo years ago, Elisapee Ishulutaq was in Vancouver for an exhibition at the Marion Scott Gallery. She was a long way from home in Pangnirtung in eastern Nunavut – about 3,700 km as the crow flies.
She was one of the few living Inuit raised in such a traditional way she didn’t learn to speak English. She spoke to me through her grandson Andrew.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a weathered and wonderful face. Our photographer Arlen Redekop took some amazing photographs of -

Peter Estlin: UK's links to Vancouver are worthy of celebration
via vancouversun.comThe history of Vancouver has been intertwined with the UK since the city’s foundations were first laid in the 19th century.
In 1867, John Deighton — a Yorkshireman also known as Gassy Jack — built a makeshift tavern that attracted a settlement which eventually grew into the modern city.
Since these distant origins, the partnership between the UK and British Columbia — and Canada more generally — has only gone from strength-to-strength.
It is fitting, therefore, that -
Beauty Bar: Elizabeth Arden My Fifth Avenue Eau De Parfum
via vancouversun.comWhat it is: A new fragrance from Elizabeth Arden that is inspired by “a woman’s rightful ambition and limitless possibilities.” And, of course, by the bright, busy Fifth Avenue street in New York City it is named after.
The scent opens with top notes of lemon, mandarin, fresh Ozonic and violet leaves; boasts heart notes of lotus flower and jasmine; and base notes of amber woods, musks, Orris flower and cedarwood.
Overall, it’s meant to parlay the “sparkling sce -
Aly Kanji: In defence of ICBC and Autoplan brokers
via vancouversun.comThe narrative on ICBC has to change. It is disingenuous of folks like Don Forgeron, president and CEO of the Insurance Bureau of Canada, to say that British Columbians pay the highest auto-insurance premiums in Canada, and that opening up auto insurance to competition is the answer.B.C. is the only full-tort jurisdiction left in Canada, which means that an injured person can sue to recover 100 per cent of their losses without any caps. You cannot compare premiums paid without comparing the -

Vancouver hospital using new lifesaving device on bleeding-to-death trauma patients
via vancouversun.comVancouver General Hospital is the first in western Canada to deploy a new balloon-tipped catheter device to save the “sickest of the sick” patients who are at risk of bleeding to death following car accidents, stabbings and other injuries such as gunshot wounds.
In the past few months, trauma teams at the hospital have been practising on cadavers and simulation mannequins, but they recently used the REBOA (resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta) on a gunshot victim -
Assisted death transfers declining: local health authorities
via vancouversun.comVancouver Coastal Health spokeswoman Carrie Stefanson says VCH does not allow publicly funded facilities to deke out of medical assistance in dying responsibilities unless they have a religious exemption.
Local health regions are making significant progress in boosting the number of patients dying in place rather than being moved to facilities to obtain medical assistance in dying.
The Fraser Health region, where palliative care hospices have been especially resistant to providing medical assist -

A Century of Believing … or Not
via vancouversun.comIt all began with a cartoon, so it’s only fitting that Garfield creator Jim Davis pens the introduction to Ripley’s Believe It or Not! 100 Years.
“For 100 years,” he writes, “this unique company has stirred the imaginations of millions around the globe, inciting awe, amazement and genuine disbelief.”
He recalls that his ‘window to the world’ as a child growing up on an Indiana farm was the weekly Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Cartoon: “It -

Letters, Dec. 11: NDP's climate action plan is too expensive and impractical, reader says
via vancouversun.comWe just had a short visit to Victoria and to Europe, where politicians are promising a real rosy green outlook for the future. By 2030 or 2040, we will not import any diesel or gasoline vehicles — we will be all-electric. They are all wet in the pants over these announcements.
These politicians must think they can just pull magic right out of the wires and transformers already in place in the areas where they want electric vehicles. In our area, if half the cars were electric, our electric -
Vancouver radio host says Chinese community taking China's side in Meng case
via vancouversun.comCalls have doubled to Sunny Chan’s Cantonese dialect afternoon call-in radio show on AM1320 since the arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou.
Callers overwhelmingly support China’s calls for Meng to be released, they feel she has been poorly treated, and there is concern that Chinese-Canadian politicians can’t openly discuss the case without alienating members of the Chinese community, said Chan.
“The Chinese community is very concerned,” he said. Most callers beli
