Daphne Bramham: Thanks to #MeToo, it's time to roll up our sleeves and get to work
via vancouversun.comTargeted by the #MeToo movement, high-profile men have quit jobs and careers, been forced out of companies and non-profits that they started, and retreated from the public eye.
Scarcely a week goes by before there’s another one because those first few women who spoke out empowered others to tell their stories. The sheer volume has made it impossible to look away or pretend that sexual assault, harassment and exploitation don’t exist in almost every workplace.

Mark Mayo: Diversity helps build better products faster
via vancouversun.comIn 2015, McKinsey & Company argued that businesses perform better when they have a more diverse workforce. Many companies have since ramped up their hiring of women and ethnically diverse individuals.
At Mozilla, we’ve experienced that not only does it feel right to work with colleagues from diverse backgrounds, it actually helps us build better products faster.
Last December in Austin, Tex., this mantra came true and blew our minds. This is when, fuelled by a week’s worth of bar -
Mario Canseco: On housing and the budget
via vancouversun.comOne of the things that makes my job as a public-opinion researcher so compelling is having the chance to test how the population will react to a particular issue or decision. A recent opportunity arrived with the perceived outcry from individual homeowners to the changes in taxation that were announced by the B.C. government in the latest budget.
An Insights West poll conducted earlier this month showed that more than four-in-five British Columbians thought three items included in the budget wer -

via vancouversun.comThe late former prime minister Pierre Trudeau once described living next door to the United States as like sleeping with an elephant — no matter how friendly and even tempered the beast, one is affected by every twitch and grunt.
That the US influences global events for better or worse is a reality current PM Justin Trudeau and other international leaders increasingly face as they find themselves confronting President Donald Trump’s disruptive and reckless policies.

Surrey’s Stacey Roy ‘cheers’ as only Canadian in global streaming game show
via vancouversun.comFrom the outside, the only clue the Surrey townhouse in Clayton Heights isn’t an ordinary home comes from the windows on the second floor, sealed up with cardboard and labelled “camera left” and “camera right.”
This is the home of Stacey Roy and Mike Parkerson and their production company Whabam Media. They’ve transformed the kitchen and garage into two studios where they film four live shows a week broadcast on Twitch, a live-streaming video platform where ho -

Directions provides between 40 and 80 hot, nutritious meals at 8 p.m. every night to homeless youth out of a warm, friendly kitchen at their drop-in centre on Burrard Street just north of Davie.

Lawyer Brent Olthuis, representing the government agency, argued in B.C. Supreme Court on Tuesday that admitting the biker convictions and related court rulings would be appropriate in the civil case.
Olthuis told Justice Barry Davies that the convictions are relevant to show the reputation of the Hells Angels, w -

via vancouversun.comLibrarians at the University of B.C. have waved their magic wand and conjured up a rare U.K. first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

And as strange as that may sound, UBC got a good deal.
Chelsea Shriver, UBC Rare Books and Special Collections librarian, said the university had been watching one rare book auction wh -

Commercial Real Estate: Building commercial strata only realistic option for Mount Pleasant
via vancouversun.comSky-high land values in Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant neighbourhood means developers getting into that market today will likely have no choice but to build commercial strata, further tightening the commercial leasing market, said a panel of local stakeholders.
Developing purpose-built commercial rental space won’t make sense for land bought today, said Matthew MacLean, a vice-president with Cushman and Wakefield in Vancouver.
The subject was raised at an Urban Development Institute pane -
Vaughn Palmer: Readers stunned by impact of B.C.'s new 'speculation tax'

The tax was aimed at foreigners and residents of other provinces. Even if people lived in one part of B.C. and owned recreational property in another, they would not be captured so long as they already paid provincial income taxes.
“If you pay tax in B.C., you are not speculating fr -
