Opinion: Fading dreams of a true North, strong and free
via vancouversun.comNortherners are a quiet, peaceful, and co-operative people. We don’t air our grievances in public. We don’t complain.
As premier of the Northwest Territories, it took an immense degree of frustration and concern to provoke the Red Alert Statement I issued to southern Canadians last November. More recently, that same concern brought me to Vancouver to engage with a wide variety of British Columbians: students, municipal and provincial government officials, environmentalists, and busin -
Opinion: A free press must not undermine fair administration of justice
via vancouversun.comAs Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia, I am responsible for the administration of the court. In keeping with the principle of judicial independence, a chief justice will rarely comment on the rulings of other judges of the court, and I do not intend to do so in the comments that follow. I do, however, feel compelled to respond to attacks that undermine public confidence in the rule of law and the judicial institution itself. I refer to recent opinion pieces by Ian Mulgrew con -

Pain at the pump: Gas prices shoot up seven cents a litre
via vancouversun.comA hike in wholesale gas prices caused by a supply squeeze shot pump prices up at least seven cents overnight and an analyst is expecting gas to go up another one penny a litre on Wednesday.
The hikes in what is already the most expensive gas market in North America hurts Randip Singh right in the wallet. The Vancouver cabbie was filling up at a Vancouver gas station on Monday and he was skeptical about a shortage causing the increase that’s going to add at least $5 to his fill.

Abbotsford one step closer to withdrawing from Metro Vancouver parks
via vancouversun.comAbbotsford has long been seen as straddling two regional districts: Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.
“We had one foot in Metro for our parks function and the rest of it we are part of the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD). That presented some challenges over the years, because we’re neither fish nor fowl,” said Abbotsford Mayor Henry Braun.
On Friday, Abbotsford took one step closer to standing with both feet in the Fraser Valley when Metro’s board of directors -

via vancouversun.comAttorney-General David Eby left no questions hanging Monday as to why the Insurance Corp. of B.C. is facing a $1.3-billion shortfall this fiscal year.
Decisions of the previous Liberal government are to blame, he told reporters repeatedly. But he gave no firm answers on what the NDP government plans to do about the mess — including whether B.C. drivers, who already pay far more than others in Canada, will see rates rise again.
