via vancouversun.comAn open-air weed market that had been operating in downtown Vancouver’s Robson Square has been shut down by police.
Complaints in recent weeks have been filed with the Vancouver police over vendors that had set up tents and carts in the pedestrian-only area, selling cannabis and related goods. Nearby food cart vendors have voiced concerns about marijuana vendors selling to minors and whether they had a business licence to sell, such as what’s required of traditional food cart vendors -

Tickets from $41.75 | vancouveropera.ca
Continues Jan. 25 and 27, 7:30 p.m.We talk a lot about opera as theatre these days, but usually that doesn’t extend to the masterworks of the bel canto era, which overwhelmingly favour spectacular singing over theatrical subtlety. In Vancouver Opera’s January offering of Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore, director Brenna Corner has performed a minor mirac -

via vancouversun.comThe Flesh Eaters
When: 8 p.m., Jan. 25
Where: Rickshaw Theatre
Tickets and info: $27.50 at ticketfly.com
In 1981, The Flesh Eaters released A Minute to Pray, a Second to Die. Critics then (and now) hailed the record for its original mix of rockabilly, country and garage-rock.
Later, The Flesh Eaters would undergo various incarnations. But for a brief time, the lineup was a who’s who of the nascent L.A. punk scene: John Doe and D.J. Bonebrake of X, Dave Alvin and Bill Bateman of the Blaster -

I can feel you creep into my private life | 4AD
Merrill Garbus and Nate Brennar are back with their fourth release and this time around are strictly a duo. Not that it’s ever been a problem for this group to sound like a complete orchestra with its smart use of technology and multi-tracking.
The opener Heart Attack is a sweet slice of mutant R&B that wouldn’t have sounded out of place in the No Wave days of the late seventies, with its funky bass line and s -

Daily Poll: What do you think of restaurants ditching cash for card?
via vancouversun.comA Vancouver ramen chain has opted to go cash-free in favour of credit, debit and Apple Pay transactions.
Marutama Ramen made the policy change in an effort to free up staff for food prep and customer service, instead of counting out change and making trips to the bank.
General manager Tatsushi Koizumi believes it’s the future of dining out, as 95 per cent of his customers are already using credit, debit and tap payment methods.

Training with 'strangers' who became crucial to life's support network
via vancouversun.comJanice Moult, a soothing voice of reason in a room filled by a motley crew, had this to offer in the final week of Sun Run InTraining two years ago:
“None of you in here are going to win the Sun Run, so just have fun and embrace the wonderful race-day vibe.”

Nutrition tips: Four foolproof habits of successful runners
via vancouversun.com1. Carbs are your best friends — and protein, too!
Don’t expect to run faster if you’re skipping on carbohydrate rich foods.
Complex carbohydrates like whole grains, starchy vegetables and fruits are excellent choices that will keep you fuelled on a training day, while minimizing risk of injury. Proteins like lean meats, beans and dairy are just as important in controlling your appetite and preventing energy dips mid-day. Aim to have at least one carbohydrate and one protein ri -

I have no idea what possessed me some 40 years ago to head out for a run along Regina’s Wascana Parkway — in -30C weather!
It was 2.5 kilometres to the university and back from my home. You can bet nobody looked at me that day, all bundled up in the cold, and thought: “that girl will race around the world representing our country, and stand on an Olympic podium!”
My intention back then was simple: I remember wantin -
Opinion: It’s time for forestry to benefit British Columbians, not multinational companies
via vancouversun.comThere was a time when securing a good-paying forestry job in B.C. was not just an option but an expectation for many.
This was a time when the provincial government took an active role in managing our public forests and overseeing the activities of private companies whose workers cut trees, milled wood and made pulp.
All that started to change in the mid-1970s and has accelerated over the past 20 years, during which approximately 100 mills shut down and more than 22,000 forest industry jobs disa -
Opinion: Consultation, litigation, or intimidation?
via vancouversun.comI am on my 24th year working in the aquaculture industry: six years at a salmon enhancement facility (Gwani hatchery), and now 18 years working as a salmon farmer. Salmon farming has always been my source of income, it has helped me raise my family and without it I would probably be on welfare due to lack of work here in the community of Alert Bay. I have turned it into a great career that I love, support, and take great pride in. But recent activities by some people around my workplace — -
South Delta potato farmer wants Crown lands protected for agriculture and nature
via vancouversun.comThird-generation farmer Rod Swenson is concerned about the destruction of prime farmland in South Delta and says he hopes that B.C.’s NDP government saves the best of what’s left — more than 250 hectares of the Brunswick Point lands — before they, too, are lost forever.
