Ice rink, hotel, restaurants highlight new Lower Lonsdale development
via vancouversun.comThe opening of a hotel, two restaurants, shops and the region’s largest public ice rink at a North Shore development taking shape will complete Lower Lonsdale’s transformation into one of the region’s top gathering spots, says North Vancouver’s mayor and the developers of Lot 5.
Located at the historic Shipyards District, Lot 5 is a $35-million, four-level commercial complex just east of the Lonsdale Quay Market and SeaBus Terminal.

Dan Fumano: If foreign home ownership is a $45-billion 'tip of the iceberg,' Vancouver expert hopes 'we're not on the Titanic'
via vancouversun.comIf $45 billion in foreign-owned Metro Vancouver housing represents the “tip of the iceberg” — to use the recent words of one federal official — then Andy Yan is a bit worried about what’s under the water.
Yan, director of Simon Fraser University’s City Program, spent the past three weeks “drilling deep” into gigabytes of raw data on Vancouver property ownership, released last month by Statistics Canada.
Yan’s analysis shows that the -
Emergency experts set on improving dismal odds of survival in highrises
via vancouversun.comTony Fagan died precisely the same way his mom did many years earlier: from cardiac arrest after doing laps in a swimming pool. Both were rushed to St. Paul’s Hospital, except Fagan was successfully resuscitated by paramedics within three minutes of his heart stopping.
En route to the hospital, paramedics actually shocked his heart numerous times to restart it.

Opinion: Nearly four decades after the Bentall Centre tragedy, construction workers continue to die
via vancouversun.comThirty-seven years ago this week, four men said goodbye to their families, put on their tools and hardhats, and went to work building one of Vancouver’s legendary highrises.
Their families would never see them again because a few hours later, they were dead.
The four carpenters — Gunther Couvreux, Donald Davis, Yrjo Mitrunen and Brian Stevenson — were working on the top of the Bentall Centre IV tower when the fly form that supported them suddenly broke away, sending them 36 flo -
REAL SCOOP: Bacon to remain in jail pending April trial
via vancouversun.comI wasn’t sure which way Justice Catherine Wedge would rule on Jamie Bacon’s bail application. After a two-day hearing in December, she reserved her decision until Tuesday morning.
She laid out her reasons in a lot of detail, all of which is under ban.
And then she denied Bacon bail. It is important to remember that despite Bacon’s notoriety, he is presumed innocent on the outstanding charge he faces. It is expected to be a jury trial.

Vaughn Palmer: Bellringer anxious to plug into B.C. Hydro's accounts
via vancouversun.comVICTORIA — Auditor General Carol Bellringer ended the year by securing the backing from two legislature committees for a full-blown audit of B.C. Hydro, a first for the independent watchdog.
A budget increase of $600,000 spread over two years to hire additional audit staff is subject to formal approval in the spring session of the legislature.
But that’s a foregone conclusion, given both the timely nature of the exercise and all-party support from both the public accounts and fi -

via vancouversun.comNorth Shore Rescue says a man caught in an avalanche Tuesday afternoon on Mount Seymour suffered a broken leg.
According to NSR social media, the skier was near the First Pump Ski Trail — not part of the Mount Seymour ski area but in Mount Seymour Provincial Park and maintained by B.C. Parks — when he was caught in a small avalanche. NSR initially classified it as “class 2,” meaning it could bury a person.
The skier fell around 200 metres, hit a tree and broke one of his -

Opinion: Column on girls' death in Oak Bay missed the mark
via vancouversun.comI am always dismayed when I see journalists misrepresenting the effect of court proceedings, particularly where they are clearly just capitalizing on trauma and sensationalizing misery. The murder of these two little girls on Christmas was an utter tragedy, and most certainly we wish someone had perceived in advance that it was preventable, foreseeable, or even conceivable. As it stands, however, it was none of those.
Ian Mulgrew’s commentary published January 4 not only misses the mark; i -

Surrey residents oppose development at golf course
via vancouversun.comA group of Surrey residents who live near the Coyote Creek golf course say a proposed multi-family development will ruin the character of their neighbourhood, jamming up nearby roads and schools, and destroying wildlife habitat.
“This development is not wanted in our community,” said Orval Baskerville, co-chair of the Coyote Creek Action Committee and vice-president of the Sequoia Ridge at Coyote Creek strata.
The proposal from Anthem Properties is to build 325 homes — 46 duple
