Through the ice-battered windshield, John Welsh could see a faint glow emanating from the only pizza shop open in Mission on Friday night.
All around, the city was dark.
“Like a scene from the Walking Dead,” he said Saturday, recalling the ice storm that blew through the city. “The stoplights were black — not even flashing. It was eerie.”
After a detour around a fallen tree, Welsh and his cousin pulled up to Mission City Pizza. Inside, warmed by the pizza oven, doze

Vancouver's homicides rise in 2017, while Surrey reports decrease
via vancouversun.comVancouver recorded more homicides in 2017 than recent years, while Surrey reported fewer than its 10-year average.
As of Friday, the City of Vancouver had registered 19 homicides in 2017, said Vancouver Police Department spokesman Sgt. Jason Robillard.
That tally is about 40 per cent higher than Vancouver’s 10-year average of 13.4 homicides per year, according to VPD crime statistics. The last time Vancouver recorded 19 homicides in a single year was 2009. There were 20 homicides in 2 -
Coroner's Reports: The people behind the overdose crisis on Vancouver Island
via vancouversun.comA 30-something man told his wife he was going to meet friends for a few drinks just before midnight in the spring of 2016. She saw that he was a bit drunk, but didn’t worry until after 2 a.m., when he hadn’t returned.
It’s not clear what led her outside, but she found her husband unconscious in the crawl space under their house. She also found used needles, lighters, spoons and small empty packets with white powder. He’d been in drug treatment before, but she didn’t -
Winter storm knocks out power in Fraser Valley; Highways to B.C. Interior now open
via vancouversun.comFriday’s hairy weather has wreaked havoc in the Fraser Valley, leaving many without power.
Saturday morning, BC Hydro reports more than 27,000 customers between Langley and Hope are still without power after freezing rain, snow and ice caused damage to the region’s electrical infrastructure. (At one point on Friday, that total was more than 100,000.)BC Hydro says they’re making “steady progress” and have called crews in from around the province to assist.

Makeover: Going for a vintage, but modern look for New Year’s Eve
via vancouversun.comIn this week’s tutorial, I’m showing you how to achieve a modern looking vintage hairstyle for New Year’s Eve, in a few easy steps.
Step 1To start the style, you’ll want to spray the KMS — ThermaShape 2-in-1 Spray. This primes the hair for heat protection and provided up to 72 hours of hold.Step 2Next, you’ll want to take 2-inch sub-sections, starting from the part side, and wrap the hair around a 1.25 inch curling wand or curling iron. Be sure to curl the hai -

Looking homeward in 2018
via vancouversun.comIt is with a combination of satisfaction and embarrassment that I offer my 2018 Metro Vancouver housing outlook.
Satisfaction, since predictions made over the past 11 years came true in 2017. Most notable was the proposal to provide temporary housing for the homeless using relocatable modular housing. In Vancouver, a demonstration project was completed at Terminal and Main streets; thousands of units are now being planned throughout Metro and the province with financial support from the federal -

The Home Front: Giving back with home decor
via vancouversun.comConscientious home design is always worth a mention — and particularly at this time of year, with the blow-out sales and blown budgets. Vancouver designer Ami McKay of PURE Design has just released a new pillow collection, PURE Pillows, which she created in collaboration with Syrian refugee and tailor Salma Mohammad, whose family McKay has helped sponsor through the Lions Bay charity It takes a village.
“I’ve been collecting fabrics for years,” says McKay. “An -
2017: A look back at a crazy year in B.C. politics
via vancouversun.comVICTORIA — In the long, extraordinary, and at-times wacky history of B.C. politics, there has never been a year quite like 2017.
The closest election in provincial history, followed by the first minority government since 1952, and then the first time in 114 years that an opposition party defeated a government on a confidence vote in the legislature and assumed power without having to go to a new election.
It was a year that saw the office of the lieutenant-governor flex its little-used pow -
Editorial: Are we up to the challenge of keeping our resolutions?
via vancouversun.comHistory tells us that the Babylonians are probably responsible for the tradition of New Year’s resolutions, going back about 2,500 years with a custom to return borrowed farm equipment at the start of a new year, which began in March or April in the lunar calendar.
The Romans introduced the practice of giving gifts, and changed the date to January in honour of Janus, the two-faced god of beginnings and transitions, who could look forward and backward at the same time. The Christian C -
Opinion: Vancouver in 2018: 10 New Year’s resolutions for reclaiming our city
via vancouversun.comWe adore Vancouver. But, for many of us, living here has become a daily battle. With affordability levels reaching unconscionable levels, we’re left wondering whether the City actually wants us here at all. Vancouver residents deserve better than the status quo politics at City Hall.
With several candidates vying for one council seat during October’s byelection, it became clear how much Vision Vancouver’s misguided policies have angered various constituencies. As members of the -
Opinion: Ten environmental success stories and indicators in 2017
via vancouversun.comNature conservation and current issues, from climate change to protecting north Atlantic right whales, can seem overwhelming. However, there were some positive areas over the past year.
Here are 10 stories from 2017 in Canada and around the world that show progress:
1) Protected areas continues to grow
Many countries are edging closer to international targets to protect 17 per cent of lands and inland waters by 2020. Globally, the amount of protected area has just reached 15 per cent, and in Can -
Opinion: Loblaw, Weston bake the numbers, burn consumers
via vancouversun.comMost Canadians were stunned and dismayed to learn that the country’s leading grocer was caught up in a price-fixing scheme with bread-maker George Weston Ltd., which is owned by the same company.
The scheme lasted from 2001-2015. As a result, Loblaw Companies Ltd. fired several people and gave $25 gift certificates to millions of Canadians who may have been affected.
The Competition Bureau, in return, offered not to lay criminal charges. That’s a precious gift for a firm for whom ima -
Opinion: Is getting a PhD worth it? Absolutely
via vancouversun.comThe following was written in response to a recent column from Aly Kamadia entitled A PhD is not all it’s chalked up to be, published Saturday, Dec. 23.
Recently, I received a big envelope in my mailbox which contained my PhD diploma. I had defended my thesis a few months ago. Looking back, the decision to pursue this diploma was the best choice I could have made, back in 2010. Not only have I doubled and almost tripled my salary in seven years, but I was able to obtain knowledge, skills an -
Opinion: Canada about to lose its edge on taxation; PM must respond to Trump cuts
via vancouversun.comFormer prime minister Pierre Trudeau once famously quipped that living next to the U.S. “is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant.”
By this, he meant that developments in the U.S. often have an oversized effect on Canada. Canadians, like it or not, must always be mindful of what’s happening south of the border, and be flexible enough to respond.
This is particularly true with our comparative standing on taxes. Unfortunately, Trudeau’s observation seems completely lo -
B.C.'s child rep begins collecting documents after Oak Bay sisters’ deaths
via vancouversun.comBritish Columbia’s child and youth representative says his office has begun to collect information about two young sisters whose bodies were found in a Victoria-area home on Christmas Day.
Bernard Richard said Friday it is too early to say whether he will launch a formal investigation, but he says his office has contacted the B.C. Coroners Service and the provincial ministry in charge of child welfare and has started gathering documents.
Richard’s office has the power to investigate -
B.C. warns public that feeding wild moose, deer can be more harmful than hunger
via vancouversun.comVICTORIA — As the snow builds up across British Columbia, the government is warning people to resist the urge to feed hungry moose, elk and deer.
The Ministry of Natural Resources says research has shown that a sudden shift in the diets of the animals can have severe negative consequences.
Extreme winter conditions can cause a higher death rate among the animals, especially when there isn’t enough foragable food or habitat available to them.
But the ministry says shifting from winter -
B.C. government asks Surrey community centre society for progress report
via vancouversun.comThe province is asking the directors of a Surrey society for evidence of what it has done with a $200,000 government grant it was awarded nine months ago.
In November, Delta-North MLA Ravi Kahlon began looking into why the previous Liberal government gave New Horizons Village Society, which is run by three men with ties to the B.C. Liberal party, the grant just 16 days after the society was incorporated.
The society had proposed to do a feasibility analysis, including preparing a business plan, -

British Columbians get break in MSP premiums to ring in 2018
via vancouversun.comBritish Columbians will ring in 2018 with a big cut in Medical Services Plan premiums, which will help offset the sting of rising ICBC rates, the provincial carbon tax increase and higher property taxes.
The NDP government’s election-promised 50-per-cent cut in MSP premiums takes effect Jan. 1 and will deliver savings of between $132 for a single adult earning between $24,001 and $26,000 up to $900 for families earning over $42,000.
“That is a heck of a lot of money,” said Kris -
This Week In History: 1903: Chicago theatre fire kills nearly 600
via vancouversun.comOn Dec. 30, 1903, just five weeks after opening, a fire ripped through the opulent Iroquois Theater in Chicago. Close to 600 people perished.
An audience of more than 2,000 had packed into the 1,700-seat theatre for a matinée performance of the musical Mr. Blue Beard when sparks from a stage light ignited a muslin curtain and fire spread to scenery flats hanging from the ceiling.
As flames swept through the packed auditorium, terrified audience members — mostly women and children &m -
