Some students don’t have enough to eat at home, some don’t have coats — just hoodies for all weather — and some skip school because it’s too far to walk or skateboard in the rain.
Jennifer Eayrs, the school’s youth and family worker, says these are the main reasons for the s -

For an increasing number of us, the whole notion of the holidays appears little more than consumerism in hyperdrive. From window displays going up in October to candy cane stripes on everything from lattes to pizza, Christmas can be a bit much.
Who hasn’t thought of hopping a flight to somewhere to skip the whole affair and kic -

The temperature is also expected to drop down to minus-4 C this weekend so the stuff that is already on the ground from Tuesday’s snowfall isn’t going anywhere.

Dr. Mark Tyndall said he envisions a regulated system where drug users would be assessed, registered and issued a card to use in vending machines to obtain hydromorphone, a painkiller commonly marketed under the brand name Dilaudid.

Bitumen spill would harm swimming performance of migrating B.C. salmon: study
via vancouversun.comVICTORIA — Salmon migrating through rivers and streams in British Columbia use all their strength, but new research says even tiny amounts of diluted bitumen weakens their chances of making it back to spawn.
Exposure to diluted bitumen hinders the swimming performance of salmon, causes their heart muscle to stiffen and damages their kidneys, Sarah Alderman, a post-doctorate researcher at the University of Guelph, said in an interview.
“We’re seeing changes from molecules up to -

Opinion: When it comes to seniors' care, words matter
via vancouversun.comFeeders, bed-blockers, bibs and demented residents.
These were once common words and phrases used in the seniors’ care sector, but thankfully, these terms are being dropped from our vernacular. Many of us no longer refer to diapers, but “incontinence pads”. Older adults instead of “old people”. People who use wheelchairs, rather than simply “wheelchairs”.
We have moved away from the term patient — opting for client — to acknowledge that peopl -
Opinion: Creating a whale Sanctuary is not as easy as it sounds
via vancouversun.comWith the recent Park Board ban on keeping captive whales, dolphins, and porpoises (cetaceans), you might wonder, “where would they live?”
One popular answer is the Whale Sanctuary Project, which proposes a seaside sanctuary as the retirement home for cetaceans currently housed at the Vancouver Aquarium and other North American aquariums and marine parks. Though there are several sea pens around the world, this would be the first ever seaside sanctuary for cetaceans. Is it a viable an -

via vancouversun.comRe: Merry Christmas to all, no matter your religion, Opinion, Dec. 19
Kudos to Calvin White and his insightful and inspirational column on celebrating Christmas no matter what faith you are, or if any. It is the Spirit of Christmas that we should all celebrate, the joy of family, giving to each other and to those less fortunate. To wish someone a Merry Christmas is not an insult to their beliefs, it is a greeting of love. Let us not be so blinded by political correctness that we lose sight of th -

Donnelly Group staff to hand out Xmas hampers in DTES
via vancouversun.comFor many people, working in a restaurant or bar feels kind of like having a second family. There’s a big kitchen and warm food. Managers are like the moms and dads, and staff feel like a giant group of siblings and cousins.
But because the hospitality industry tends to attract transient workers — students and travellers — a lot of restaurant families are separated from their real families.
“Theoretical orphans,” is how Damon Holowchak, a partner in Vancouver’s -
