Illicit overdoses have claimed 1,208 lives in British Columbia between January and October this year.
The B.C. Coroners Service says the latest figure compares with 683 deaths during the same period last year.
The service says fentanyl was detected in 999 of the confirmed and suspected deaths so far in 2017, an increase of 136 per cent from the same period last year.

Delta company investigating carbon monoxide exposure that affected 43 greenhouse workers
via vancouversun.comDELTA — A company says it is investigating to determine if changes are needed in its operations after dozens of workers were exposed to carbon monoxide at one of its farms in Delta on the weekend.
Windset Farms says workers were using gas-powered pressure washers in a greenhouse on Saturday when an employee reported feeling unwell.
It says in a statement that 43 workers received medical evaluation and treatment, and everyone was released from hospital by Saturday night.

Barred owl now recovering after being rescued in downtown Vancouver
via vancouversun.comA barred owl suffering from injuries was rescued in downtown Vancouver on Monday morning.
The owl was found with injuries to its left side including a swollen left eye, damaged feathers on its left wing and blood pooling in its mouth.
“Due to the nature of the injuries it appears the owl was hit by a car,” said Wildlife Rescue spokesman Sam Smith.

Gary Kenneth Bob, a Lantzville, Vancouver Island resident, has been charged with one count of animal cruelty under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act after his dog, a senior terrier named Rascal, was found to have lost about 85 per cent of its blood and was close to death.

While that figure may seem high to some, it’s still 18 per cent less than last year’s figure which saw the average Canadian shopper spending $884 on gifts during the same season, notes the survey results released Monday by the Chartered Professional Accounts of Canada.

Heavy fog blankets Metro Vancouver Monday morning

The fog is expected to lift later in the morning.
“Near zero visibility in fog is expected or occurring,” read the advisory issued Monday around 5 a.m. “Dense fog persists over much of Metro Vancouver.
“Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations.”
