Renters in B.C. no longer need to worry about their landlords hiking up rates to match high rents in hot neighbourhoods.
The NDP government announced it’s closing a loophole in residential tenancy and manufactured home park tenancy regulations by eliminating a clause that permitted landlords to raise rates above the normally allowable rental increase to match rents within a geographic area.

Coquitlam school trustees' free trips to China raise ethical concerns
via vancouversun.comCoquitlam school trustees are under fire for taking Chinese-government-paid trips to China.
For the past few years, some trustees, district officials and teachers have been taking 10-day trips during the March break paid for by Hanban, an arm of the Chinese government that funds the Confucius Institutes.
Confucius Institutes are academic programs that provide schools and universities instruction in Chinese language and culture. School District 43 — which includes schools in Coquitlam -

Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol has been a phenomenon since it was first published as a novella in December 1843. It was almost immediately adapted for the stage, and within a couple of months there were eight different versions playing in London.
The staged Christmas Carol has remained insanely popular ever since, and seasonal outbreaks of Christmas Carolitis have become an annual eve -

The Home Front: Paying homage to traditional candle-making
via vancouversun.comThe power of scent is all important when it comes to making your home a warm and inviting place, says Nick Rabuchin, co-founder of Vancouver Candle Co. And that’s why he and his partner Farouk Babul launched their company three years ago.
“We were candle fanatics, and had bought a number of candles,” he says, “and the last one we bought just didn’t burn very well, and we thought there’s got to be a way of fixing it, and through the process of determining how t -

Cascade City 'a real departure' for Richmond
via vancouversun.comIt’s important for a city’s architecture not to become too predictable, says Arno Matis, principle at Arno Matis Architecture. In a break from the ubiquitous tower-and-podium style, Cascade City, a development planned for Richmond by Landa Global Properties, represents a different configuration where each tower blends into a podium in one continuous form.
Arno Matis Architecture and Rafii Architects collaborated on the design of the development, which comprises two 15-storey towers o -
Two pedestrians seriously hurt in crosswalk crash in Newton
via vancouversun.comTwo pedestrians were seriously injured Friday evening when they were hit in a marked crosswalk in the Newton area of Surrey.
Police say the pair were crossing at 128th Street and 80th Avenue shortly after 7:30 p.m. when a vehicle struck them.
There was heavy fog in the area at the time, and Surrey RCMP say it doesn’t appear alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.
“The driver … remained on scene and is co-operating with police,” said Staff Sgt. Dwayne Farlin in a news -

Opinion: Newly disclosed data shows need for inquiry into fracking
via vancouversun.comIn May 2014, B.C.’s then-Minister of Natural Gas Development, Rich Coleman, came out swinging when a team of Canadian and American scientists issued a report saying that fossil-fuel-industry fracking operations could contaminate surface and groundwater sources.
“The reality is we’ve been doing this for over 50 years, we’ve never had a contamination from a drill, we’ve never had a drill stem leak or fail,” Coleman said. “We do it as well or better than an -
Opinion: Homelessness: We all pay
via vancouversun.comI have the privilege of living in a lovely downtown Vancouver neighbourhood. The late-fall mornings are crisp and fresh and, even in a light drizzle, it’s a pleasant place to live, work and walk. But here’s something that makes me reject any claim that Vancouver is one of the world’s most “liveable” cities: On one recent early morning coffee run, I counted 13 homeless people sleeping in nooks and doorways — slumped in the shadows of the million-dollar condos t -
Opinion: Canadian millennials seek closer, but pragmatic, connection to Asia
via vancouversun.comMillennials are the first generation of Canadians whose world will be shaped by the “rise of Asia” for the entirety of their adult lives. As we plug into our digitally-connected world, we have witnessed in real-time the rapid economic growth and political transformation in Asia.
The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada’s newest national opinion poll reveals that Canadian millennials — those aged 18 to 34 — are becoming increasingly open-minded about the opportunities t -
Opinion: Canada’s mining industry leads way to a lower-carbon economy
via vancouversun.comWhen it comes to protecting the environment and fighting climate change, many people instinctively and unfairly put the mining and metals industry in the “bad guys” category. In fact, even before the Paris Agreement on climate change was negotiated two years ago, many mining and metals companies had already become part of the solution, both for the good of the planet and the good of the industry.
The industry’s role in decarbonizing our planet has many parts, including reducing -
Letters: Increase supply to resolve housing crisis
via vancouversun.comWhat is so complicated about supply-demand dynamics in a market economy? If you want to lower prices for a commodity, you increase supply. Conversely, prices will rise if demand outstrips supply.
The Lower Mainland problem, so blatantly obvious to everyone, is a critical lack of supply, both of rental and for-sale accommodation. It’s a setup for speculators, who will buy up anything from pork bellies to penthouses if they believe there will be a shortage.
Yet almost every measure ena -
Editorial: Move cautiously in setting the stage for selling pot
via vancouversun.comB.C.’s NDP government is right to get ahead of the curve and establish a framework for distributing and regulating recreational cannabis in advance of the federal government legalizing it next July.
But the plan still has some shortcomings that should be addressed before we legally light up our Sativa and enjoy what one vendor described as its spicy, earthy flavours.
B.C. intends to make marijuana available at public and private retail outlets, supplied exclusively by the B.C. -
Neighbourhood group files petition against city of Vancouver over modular housing project in Marpole
