One night in February, Jacqueline Jordan’s ex-boss showed up at her door in Airdrie, Alta., with an outrageous offer.
“Jackie, I’m gonna change your life,” she said he told her.
He announced he was going to gift Jordan $1 million — a portion of the riches he said he had amassed from a lottery win and smart investments.

Building access over railroad crossings to ease traffic congestion
via vancouversun.comOn an average day, the safety barrier at the Portside Road train crossing in Richmond comes down 37 times a day for a total of more than two hours each day. Drivers are left fuming in their cars and the ensuing traffic congestion gets backed up into several major roads nearby.
Similar scenes are playing out in other spots across Metro Vancouver and into the Fraser Valley, according to documents from the Gateway Transportation Collaboration Forum.

Dan Fumano: With Nick's final meatball, 'old Vancouver disappearing'
via vancouversun.comFor half a century, when Jimmy Pattison entertained out-of-town VIPs, he always skipped the swanky spots downtown, and instead took them to a crowded hole-in-the-wall spaghetti joint in an apartment building’s ground-floor on a quiet block in the East End.
“I’ve been going there for 50 years,” Pattison said this week. “Sometimes, really important people would come to town and I would always take them to Nick’s. I’ve taken premiers of the provinces of Can -
Adopt-A-School: Helping refugee children overcome the traumas of their past
via vancouversun.com“We’ve all been broken before, but we heal. We do have the darkness still, but we have to learn to live without the darkness.” — a handwritten sign pinned to the wall in Guildford Park Secondary.
For many refugee students attending Surrey schools, their bodies may be safely in a classroom, but their minds are still inhabiting the dangerous places they fled.
Surrey likely has the largest population of refugee families of any city in B.C., and the n -

Red Racer Smore Stout has what you are looking for with a roasted malt body, marshmallow, chocolate and toasty comfort of graham crackers, “the beer equivalent of a fresh s’more bar,” according to ale architect Gary Lohin, Central City’s brewmaster.

This Week in History: 1941 Vancouver blacks out after the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor
via vancouversun.comThe Japanese attacks on Pearl Harbor and Hong Kong on Dec. 7, 1941 stirred panic in Vancouver. There were rumours that a Japanese aircraft carrier had been spotted off the coast near San Francisco, and that U.S. planes had been dispatched to track it down.
No Japanese carrier was found. But Vancouver went into a blackout, just in case.
“Blackout’s Not Play Now, It’s For Keeps,” declared a Sun headline on Dec. 9.

REAL SCOOP: Bacon's "true love" dies as his charges stayed
via vancouversun.comI had heard about Madison Fine’s tragic overdose from several sources and from Real Scoop readers. So I confirmed details of what happened and have written this story.
Her family obviously saw her differently than police, who believe she has continued to run drug lines and be involved in some of the conflicts that have caused Red Scorpion faction to split apart.
But it is clear from her obituary, that she had a loving family who is already missing her.
Here’s my story:

Town Talk: Odd Squad celebrates 20 years of helping addicts recover
via vancouversun.comODD EVENING: Twenty years ago, Vancouver police constables Toby Hinton and Al Arsenault founded what would become Odd Squad Productions to help youngsters evade or overcome the lure of drugs. It wasn’t always an easy sell, even among police. Vancouver's opioid crisis: Fire crews feel strain of overdose calls
via vancouversun.comVancouver firefighters have responded to more than 6,000 overdose calls this year, a 28 per cent increase over last year with a month remaining in 2017.
Mayor Gregor Robertson says the numbers highlight the magnitude of the “horrific” opioid crisis that is tearing through the city, province and country.
The city says the high volume of calls is putting a continued strain on services and front-line workers.
Last week alone, Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services responded to 81 overdose c -

Daily Poll: Do you agree with the NEB's controversial approval of Kinder Morgan's request to bypass Burnaby laws to build a pipeline?
via vancouversun.comA National Energy Board ruling Thursday favoured Kinder Morgan Canada’s efforts to bypass Burnaby bylaws to build its Trans Mountain expansion project. The move has many residents outraged, including B.C.’s Environment Minister George Heyman, who said the government will look for ways to fight the decision. Another hot trend, one that is easier yet equally spectacular, is to decorate patios and balconies for winter with arrangements made from fragrant, fresh-cut green branches.
