Mark Blucher, ICBC’s president and CEO, is moving on.
In a Thursday afternoon news release, ICBC said Blucher is moving to a similar role with the Vancouver-based Central 1 Credit Union, effective Dec. 29.

At Central 1, Blucher replaces Don Wright, who left the credit union in July to become head of the public service for the new NDP government.

Barred owl invasion results in 150 of the raptors taken to rehab facility
via vancouversun.comA veritable barred owl invasion is underway. More than 150 of the raptors have been brought dead or injured to a local wildlife rehabilitation facility, in addition to numerous sightings in downtown Vancouver.
A jogger even reported being dive-bombed by one near English Bay.
“The bird took a swoop and hit him in the noggin,” Rob Hope, raptor care manager at OWL rehab in South Delta, said Thursday. “It was a case of mistaken food, or something startled the bird to hit him.&rdquo -
National Energy Board rules in favour of Trans Mountain on Burnaby pipeline impasse
via vancouversun.comThe National Energy Board has ruled in favour of Kinder Morgan Canada in its efforts to bypass Burnaby bylaws that stand in the way of its Trans Mountain expansion project.
The NEB order says the company is not required to comply with two sections of the city’s bylaws as it prepares to begin construction in the area.
The company had filed a motion to have the NEB overrule the bylaws on a constitutional basis, because it claimed the city was delaying a project the federal government had app -

Restaurant review: Dosas land on Davie

1235 Davie Street | 604-669-5899
Open daily, 10 a.m. to midnight; daviedosacompany.com
Instinct isn’t always hiding in the basement of consciousness. When we saw Davie Dosa, a new neighbourly spot on Davie Street, there was a lone diner, a signal to keep on walking.
But we walked in and instinct revealed its hand.
First, Sharv Ramachandra confidently welcomed us. He’s the owner and if a restaurant isn’t doing well, an owner’s desperation is hard to conceal.

Adopt-A-School: Growing need for a quality breakfast
via vancouversun.comRobin Pilchak knows what it’s like being a single mother with young children and how hard it is to feed them when money is tight.
“I’m a single mom with three kids, and I struggled for quite a while. It’s not easy to get good, healthy food for kids because it costs so much,” said Pilchak. “When my kids were growing up, there weren’t any programs in schools to feed kids. We really could have used something.”
This explains why Pilchak -

Indigenous Christianity on the rise in Vancouver and beyond
via vancouversun.comIn the wake of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report, Canadians increasingly view Christianity as the enemy of Indigenous people.
The “truth,” as conveyed mostly through the mass media, has shone a harsh light on the federally funded, church-run residential schools for Indigenous youth, almost all of which closed by the 1970s.
The “reconciliation” part of the TRC process has received far less attention. But inter-spiritual reconciliation has been going on for dec -

SkyTrain attack on Muslim teen inspires fear, anger and forgiveness
via vancouversun.comRacists attacks like the incident earlier this week sow fear in the community, especially when the victim is young and female, say local Muslim leaders.
“It’s such a terrible disappointing thing to happen and terrifying for the young woman who was accosted,” said Haroon Khan, trustee at Al Jamia Masjid Mosque in Vancouver. “Women outwardly show their faith and modesty with the hijab and this guy became unhinged and assaulted her. It’s an ass -

Women filmmakers once again enjoy welcoming world of Whistler Film Festival
via vancouversun.comIt was just recently reported that Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig’s new coming-of-age film, is now the best-reviewed movie on the popular Rotten Tomatoes online aggregate review site.
Now, to be clear, the film was written and directed by Gerwig, a female, and it tells the story of a teenage girl and her relationship with her mother, both females.
Beanie Feldstein, left, and Saoirse Ronan in a scene from Lady Bird.
The point is females can make films. This is, unfortunately, a point Hollywood is -
Film draws a picture of architect behind new Vancouver House tower
via vancouversun.comThe new twisty tower that is quickly rising at the foot of Howe Street is certainly attention-grabbing and, according to the documentary Big Time, that is what the architect behind the 59-storey Vancouver House skyscraper is all about.
In theatres now, Big Time, from director Kaspar Astrup Schröder, lets viewers in on architect Bjarke Ingels’ methods, and some might say his madness, as the 40-year-old from Copenhagen designs well outside the box.For instance, if you Google-image -
Classical music that's not for the season
via vancouversun.comIt’s a truth universally acknowledged that one can hear Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer too many times. Ditto the syrupy seasonal standards on those awful, awful shopping-mall CDs.

There is also always the risk that you get the lecture on the importance of so-and-so in terms of such-and-such obscure scene at some time in history for your efforts and wind up pinching yourself to stay awake.
Yet there is some satisfaction to be had in presenting someone with encyclopedic recall of the finest use of a Bigs -
