via vancouversun.comSearch and rescue volunteers are working to free a skier stuck on a steep slope on Mt. Seymour Sunday evening.
Using data from the skier’s mobile phone, rescuers were able place the skier about 750 metres down Shone Creek, on the east side of the mountain, south of Hastings Lake.
“Not injured but stuck,” Mike Danks from North Shore Search and Rescue said. Asked to describe how steep the slope is, he called it “unpleasant.”
The area is well outside the Mt. Seymour Re -

“No signs of Couture,” North Shore Rescue’s Mike Danks said.

City versus protesters at Marpole modular-housing site
via vancouversun.comSome Marpole residents say the City of Vancouver is using “bullying tactics” by taking protesters to court over a contentious modular-housing development meant to house the homeless.
On Friday, the city announced it was seeking an injunction so construction crews can access the site on Heather Street and West 57th Avenue after protesters blocked the entrance to construction workers and trucks.
“We are disappointed that Mayor Gregor Robertson and Vision Vancouver are using -

Opinion: We're still a little lonely, but want to get to know each other better
via vancouversun.comWhat does it really mean to live in Metro Vancouver? Are we beautiful but lonely? Distant with expensive tastes? Hard to get to know? Harder yet to connect with?
We thought it time to update our profile.
In 2012, when the Vancouver Foundation first released its Connections and Engagement report, the findings described Metro Vancouver as a hard place to make friends. Our neighbourhood connections were cordial but weak. Participation levels in community life were declining.

Opinion: Beyond Trump: U.S. animosity toward NAFTA runs deep
via vancouversun.comOver the last 18 months, many smart and successful people have underestimated or misread Donald Trump. On the North American Free Trade Agreement, Canadians, and particularly the people of B.C., cannot afford to do the same.
As 2017 comes to a close, the most important public policy discussion this year — the renegotiation of NAFTA — will spill over into 2018. With the future of the most successful economic partnership in jeopardy, clarity about the Canadian and U.S. forces that have -
Letters: Cooper's reporting demonstrates importance of investigative journalism
via vancouversun.comRe: ICBC to review ‘troubling’ connection, Nov. 29
I would like to congratulate reporter Sam Cooper for the excellent research in his front-page story examining links between a Surrey car seller and various others who appear to be scamming ICBC and using illegal proceeds to launder money at a casino.
Cooper’s example of skilled — and dogged — investigative journalism will remind readers why newspapers are especially valuable today, when a global economy has wrought -
B.C. embracing medical assistance in dying
via vancouversun.comChris Walters felt angry and cheated on the last morning of his life.
He was just 41 years and one day old when he opted to end his life in September through Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) after seven futile rounds of debilitating chemotherapy for Stage 4 colon cancer.
Nearly a year-and-a-half after Canada amended the Criminal Code to legalize physician-assisted death, about 55 terminally ill British Columbians opt for the procedure each month, the highest per-capita rate in Canada. Whether -

Santa Claus comes to town, delights Vancouver crowds
via vancouversun.comHours before the marching bands and dance troupes, Mr. and Mrs. Claus, several of their elves and some 300,000 spectators appeared for the annual Santa Claus Parade in downtown Vancouver Sunday, there was Mary Anne Mackay.
The North Vancouver woman had taken an early SeaBus across Burrard Inlet to secure a prime seat for herself and five others along the then-empty parade route, then settled into some knitting under a blue sky while her husband shopped for Christmas gifts.

Fish farms in BC: Occupied by protesters
via vancouversun.comMoe Isaac walks along the dock at Midsummer Island, past colourful protest signs under a heavy November sky.
Rain came down like a curtain yesterday and today the clouds have an ashen glow.
Isaac, who manages the Marine Harvest salmon farm, steps up to the edge of a pen in his work boots and worn orange life-jacket. Beyond his toes, the surface of the water breaks every few seconds — sliced by a dorsal fin or rippled by a leaping fish.
About 53,000 Atlantic salmon swim in this 30-by-30-foo -
