Once Vancouver’s Chinatown streets thronged with Chinese shoppers, bags brimming with edibles such as bok choy and hin choy, barbecued pork from a barbecue takeaway or steamed buns filled with lotus seed paste. Now, not so much. That Vancouver DNA is dying by the year.
Which is why Carol Lee jumped in and opened Chinatown BBQ in early November, as part of a larger effort by the comm -
Vancouver councillor says more transparency needed on proposed 57th Avenue Canada Line station
via vancouversun.comVancouver city councillor George Affleck is asking for more clarity and transparency about the future of a proposed Canada Line station at Cambie and 57th Avenue.
In June, the city approved a rezoning application by Onni Group for the redevelopment of the Pearson Dogwood lands, which would include about 2,700 residential units as well as other facilities including a community health centre and a public park.
The city got a commitment from Onni to set aside land on the northeast corner of the sit -
Finance Minister has told commission to improve penalty collections
via vancouversun.comThe provincial government has ordered the B.C. Securities Commission to improve its poor record of collecting the fines it has imposed — more than half a billion dollars unpaid by fraudsters in the past decade.
“I am certainly not happy,” Finance Minister Carole James said Wednesday at the B.C. Legislature.
James said she told the commission to look at tools and options to improve collection and get back to her “soon”.
She said the province is also looking at ways i -
Missing dog walker found alive after two days lost in Coquitlam back country
via vancouversun.comIn treacherous conditions, deep in the wilderness and far from well-trodden trails off Burke Mountain, a soft mutter and chorus of barking dogs let search teams know they’d succeeded in a remarkable task.
Around 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, two days after Annette Poitras had gone missing with three dogs she’d been walking, a search-and-rescue team radioed colleagues to say their sound sweeps had worked and they’d made voice contact with the 56-year-old mother.
The canine trio &md -
Vaughn Palmer: Mungall's all in on fracking review, but not moratorium
via vancouversun.comVICTORIA — During a break from answering questions in the legislature about Site C this week, Energy Minister Michelle Mungall faced down a call for a full blown public inquiry and possible moratorium on fracking in the natural gas sector.
The call for the inquiry came from a coalition of environmental, community and First Nations organizations, concerned about the impact of fracking on water quality, public health and safety. In the past, there have been calls for a moratorium on the prac -
REAL SCOOP: Witness A says he isn't lying about confession
via vancouversun.comWitness A finished his cross-examination at the Cory Vallee murder trial Wednesday. The Crown will ask him a few more questions on Friday (I will be off) before he is done on the stand. There are a few left over pieces of evidence for next week, but this trial is finally winding down after a year. Not sure if the closing arguments will happen right away or if there will be a break. I hope they happen before Christmas.
Here’s my latest story:
Witness denies he lied about Vallee confes -

New federal housing plan requires big provincial buy-in
via vancouversun.comThe federal government laid out a new national housing plan on Wednesday, but there was little indication of what it means for B.C. and there were fears it will take years for federal dollars to flow into new homes.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and federal Social Development Minister Jean-Yves Duclos announced a 10-year plan including a promise of legislation to make housing a fundamental right, creation of a new, portable housing benefit for low-income households, and giving top priority -
Opinion: Site C is part of solution in addressing climate change
via vancouversun.comThe British Columbia Utilities Commission recently published its report on the 1,100-MW Site C Clean Energy Project which is already under construction. Among other things, the BCUC was mandated to report on the implications of three scenarios: suspension, completion and termination (and remediation) of the project. I understand its role wasn’t to take a position on the matter, but rather to analyze and relay the facts.
However, in this exercise, facts alone can’t paint the entire pi -
Opinion: Next RCMP Commissioner will have toughest job in Ottawa
via vancouversun.comAs the government’s deadline to find a new RCMP commissioner draws near, here are a few thoughts for the candidate selected to lead the force, including the 8,400 Mounties in British Columbia — the RCMP’s largest provincial division.
Stick to policing, not politics
The first is the increasing politicalization of the RCMP. Here are a few notable examples:
• In December 2005, at the height of the federal election, the Mounties took the highly unusual -

Tony Paisana finished his cross-examination of a former United Nations gangster-turned-witness by grilling the man over things he said to police when he first began cooperating with them in 2013.
Paisana suggested to the witness, who can only be called A due to a publication ban, that Vallee never told him a
