A rainfall warning is in effect for Metro Vancouver, with up to 80 millimetres of rain expected in some areas Saturday night.
Environment Canada says the warning only covers some areas of the region, including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge and the North Shore, where heavy rain is expected throughout the evening.
The agency said rainfall accumulations of 50 to 80 millimetres are expected to fall over Howe Sound, northern sections of Metro Vancouver, and southern sections of the Sunshine Coast.

Thousands expected in Abbotsford at memorial for fallen police officer
via vancouversun.comThe streets of Abbotsford will be lined with blue on Sunday as thousands of police officers from across the country and around the world march in remembrance of their slain colleague.

With Airbnb regulated, what are the tax implications for Vancouver hosts?
via vancouversun.comAs Vancouver becomes Canada’s first major city to regulate short-term home rentals, many prospective hosts have questions about how it could work for them.
Thousands of hosts in Vancouver have been renting out rooms and entire homes, operating in a legal grey area through online platforms, the largest of which is Airbnb. But starting in April, Vancouver homeowners will have to become a part of the city’s new regulatory regime for short-term home rentals, approved by council last week -

A kid who grew up in the projects is now in charge of reducing poverty in B.C.
via vancouversun.comThe 350-square-foot, two-bedroom apartment is a cramped, no-frills space, but it provided a safe place for cabinet-minister-to-be Shane Simpson, his little sister and his mother when they desperately needed a home.
As Simpson walks through the tiny unit in the large East Vancouver housing project, he recalls a frugal time when his single mother raised two kids there on welfare wages after leaving her husband in the late 1960s.
“My dad beat my mom up. And one day, when my sister was ab -

Makeup tutorial: How to enhance and enlarge the shape of your eyes
via vancouversun.comIn this week’s makeup tutorial I’m showing you how to enhance and enlarge the shape of your eyes with the perfect smoky eye makeup, using the Tarte — Tartelette In Bloom eyeshadow palette.
Step 1Start by priming the eye lid with a cream eyeshadow base. I’m using MAC Paint Pot in Stormy Pink. It’s a pinky-plum colour which really helps to enhance a green eye colour. Use it on it’s own for a more down-played and softer look.
Step 2Using a fluffy blender brush, s -

Editorial: Vancouver's short-term rental rules should be in public interest
via vancouversun.comVancouver city council followed the lead of other major cities in the world this week in establishing a regulatory regime for short-term rentals, such as those advertised on Airbnb and other platforms.
The new rules effectively legitimize an activity that existed in a legal grey zone and eliminate uncertainty — a plus for both Airbnb, which is reportedly mulling an IPO, and Airbnb hosts, who no longer need to fear they are breaking the law.
But the prohibition on renting out secondar -

The Home Front: A 'pre-loved' approach to holiday decor and gift giving
via vancouversun.comWhat do you give someone who has everything? Attitude springs to mind. But if that sounds too confrontational, try originality — through creatively sourced second-hand goods from thrift stores, online sites like Kijiji, and vintage markets, says decor and lifestyle expert Janette Ewen.
“What I love about giving second-hand is you can give things to people that tell a story,” Ewen says. “Even if you write a little story about it, and pop it in with the gift, it makes it al -

SAN FRANCISCO — Vancouver’s spring TED conference is the latest hot spot for sexual harassment allegations, conference organizers acknowledge.

Opinion: Increase irrigated land area to attain food security in B.C.
via vancouversun.comHome to two-thirds of British Columbians, the mighty Fraser River is the lifeblood of a vast watershed that stretches from the Rockies to the Pacific. The lower Fraser Valley, one of the most productive agricultural regions in Canada, is vital to B.C.’s long-term food security.
The Fraser drains one of the most diverse watersheds in North America — for example, its vast lands contain ten of B.C.’s 14 biogeoclimatic zones. Yet many of the Fraser’s 34 tributaries, or -
Letters: Lack of money forces many to represent themselves in court
via vancouversun.comRe: Not an ounce of quit in self-represented litigant, Ian Mulgrew column, Nov. 10.
Ian Mulgrew writes sympathetically about the travails of former North Van councillor Joan Gadsby who has to borrow money to continue litigating adverse decisions resulting from her misfortunes in property investment. She appears to have fallen on hard times and one does feel for her. One must not lose sight of the fact that our courts are plugged with unrepresented litigants, many of whom are less educated and so -
Editorial: Short-term rental regs should be in public interest
via vancouversun.comVancouver city council followed the lead of other major cities in the world this week in establishing a regulatory regime for short-term rentals, such as those advertised on Airbnb and other platforms.

Pine beetles from Jasper National Park invading neighbouring commercial forest
via vancouversun.comA massive and uncontrollable buildup of mountain pine beetles in Jasper National Park is starting to explode into commercially valuable forests along its boundaries.
Foresters along the park’s edge have seen a tenfold increase in beetle infestation in just months, and some scientists wonder if Parks Canada could have done more to control the invasion a few years ago.
“They decided to consider the pine beetle a ‘native disturbance agent,”‘ said Allan Carroll, who has -

Cruise-ship growth facing bottlenecks in Vancouver
via vancouversun.comThe Port of Vancouver faces a number of bottlenecks as it tries to accommodate a burgeoning cruise-ship industry.
Large, modern cruise ships will bring 840,000 passengers to Vancouver streets this year, but growing that number may not be possible without significant investments in infrastructure, according to Greg Wirtz, president and CEO of the industry group Cruise Lines International Association, North West and Canada.
“The port authority opted to move the cruise business to Canada -

Daphne Bramham: Teacher Daryl Mutz's legacy lives on in his students and his bequests
via vancouversun.comThere were lots of days that Daryl Mutz was, frankly, terrified to enter the classroom at Vancouver’s Sir Charles Tupper Secondary.
It was the late 1950s and mid-1960s, and Tupper wasn’t just another high school. It was a dumping ground for kids who had been kicked out or didn’t fit in at other schools. There were gang members, criminals and kids with a wide array of emotional and mental problems.
“Daryl was bird like. Slight,” says his close friend and Tupper colle -
