Once I lived in an apartment in Kitsilano. At that time, I paid $800 a month for a two-bedroom with an ocean view, and the landlord didn’t wear raise-the-rent kick-ass jackboots. No, he gave me a teary hug when I left.
It was a time when I went out for meals even more than I do now as a restaurant critic. I liked the contact with the earth beneath me and to escape the boxed in fee -

via vancouversun.comThe latest international climate change meeting is underway in Bonn, Germany. There is the usual concern about insufficient progress in tackling greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and finger pointing at countries seen as not doing their part. Some of this criticism is warranted. In certain quarters, Canada is once again chastised for being a laggard: not doing enough, fast enough, while the United States, which has withdrawn from the Paris Accord, is taking credit for big reductions in emissions. &n -
Obit: Longtime Province reporter John Colebourn passes away after fight with cancer
via vancouversun.comYou meet a lot of characters in the newspaper business. But there was never anybody quite like John Colebourn, who died Sunday from esophageal cancer.
Colebourn, 59, was a legend at The Province, a gifted writer equally adept at hard news and bizarre tabloid stories.
“It’s almost like the more ridiculous the story, the more he enjoyed it,” said assistant city editor Lora Grindlay.
“He told some serious stories, and helped a lot of people in difficult situations. But he ha -
Dan Fumano: 'A daily game of Russian Roulette' — lessons from Vancouver's last overdose crisis
via vancouversun.comThe human toll of the overdose epidemic currently devastating Vancouver and B.C. can get lost in numbers and statistics. But data, along with a bit of history, are crucial if you want at least to try to understand the scope of what’s going on in our city.
In the 1990s, Vancouver was rocked by twin public-health crises; drug-overdose deaths surged, while simultaneously, HIV/AIDS-related deaths soared along with infection rates among intravenous drug users. Between 1991 and 1993, the combine -

StructureCraft expands B.C.'s base for engineered timber production with new plant

Land values and condo prices constrain purpose-built rental units, say developers
via vancouversun.comDevelopers, including some who have been reaping the gains of skyrocketing pre-sale condo prices across Metro Vancouver, say more rental stock needs to be built.
City planners, the lenders who finance projects and, of course, would-be tenants all agree adding purpose-built, rental units can temper the housing crisis.
But escalating land values as well as conflicting and competing housing policies are conspiring to make this a challenge, according to a panel moderated by Cynthia Jagger of HQ Comm -

Opinion: Vancouver should abandon costly bike-share program when contract up
via vancouversun.comIn July 2016, the City of Vancouver launched Mobi, a bike share program designed to increase daily bicycle use and “fill a gap in the transportation system” while moving toward the greater goal of a “green” city, as Mayor Gregor Robertson put it. And, while Mobi may appear to deliver benefits, the mayor’s vision for clean two-wheeled transit may not be all that it seems. It turns out that those benefits come with a high price tag and high risk.

Controversial Gastown proposal reduced, by three feet
via vancouversun.comOn the heels of the controversy over 105 Keefer in Vancouver’s Chinatown, the city has another hot potato on its hands in a heritage neighbourhood.
Last year, a proposal to redevelop the historic Stanley and New Fountain Hotels was rejected by the Gastown community.
The plan called for the Stanley and New Fountain to be demolished, except for their facades, and three new structures built in their place, with a mixture of social and market rental housing. One of the buildings woul -
Swimmers race to save Vancouver pools
via vancouversun.comA proposal to drain and shutter a pair of neighbourhood pools in Vancouver has whipped up a wave of angry opposition ahead of a looming Park Board vote.
In early December, board commissioners will debate then vote on whether to approve an aquatics strategy that in its latest form calls for the closure of Lord Byng and Templeton Park pools.
Park board staff are revising their so-called VanSplash strategy ahead of the vote, but declined an interview on the topic until after the decision -
