A B.C. woman claims her daughters faced discrimination when the company that manages their strata unit fined them for keeping two therapy dogs.
According to a summary recently posted on the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal website, the woman’s two daughters have “mental health concerns” that require the assistance of therapy dogs. One of the daughters struggles with bipolar disorder, while the other has a mental disability. (The girls are not named because they are minors; neith

Vancouver to vote on regulating short-term rentals
via vancouversun.comVancouver city council will vote Tuesday on how to regulate short-term vacation rentals listed on websites like Airbnb and Expedia.
The city wants to regulate the thousands of short-term rental units in Vancouver in a bid to ease the rental housing crunch.
Under the proposed regulations, rental operators would be required to purchase a $49 annual business license.
Short-term rentals would only be allowed in the operator’s principal residence; rentals of secondary suites would be prohi -
SFU course for DTES residents reunites man with wife, four daughters
via vancouversun.comVancouver — Living in a Downtown Eastside homeless shelter, sharing a room with up to 30 strangers and separated from his wife and four daughters by an hour-plus transit ride — when he could afford a ticket — José Guerra found a silver lining.
“It was really hard,” the 53-year-old said. “I love my wife and children so much, I love to be with them. … For some families, they have a movie night once a week. Our family, we did something together -

Makeover: Time for an uplifting new look
via vancouversun.comNadine Pinnell is a 38-year-old biologist. She’s had a string of mishaps from a broken arm to a broken toe, and needed an uplifting new look.
Nadine has medium textured and long hair. She hasn’t had a hair cut in almost one year and her ends were feeling a little dry. She was ready for a shorter length and with a little more body.
I shampooed her hair using KMS Moist Repair — Shampoo and Conditioner, for moisture repair and manageability. I sectioned her hair into a centra vert -

Ian Mulgew: Hollywood's war not our war — remembering Canadian heroes
via vancouversun.comWith a badly-whistled Colonel Bogey March waning, Al Borthwick flipped through the pages of an emerald green photo album.
“There he is, Uncle Roy — the man who bombed the Bridge on the River Kwai,” he said proudly. “That’s the reconnaissance photo taken after they did it. “I knew him from when I was a little boy. He was an inspiration.”
“But he didn’t talk much about the war,” added Roy’s son, Steve. “He and his friends -

The Home Front: Colour talk
via vancouversun.comThe psychology of colour is endlessly debated in the world of home decor and furnishings, and no more so than when it comes to the paint on our walls.
Certain colours, we’re told by designers and paint producers, can make us feel invigorated and alive, while others have a soothing, calming effect. Light colours, like white, will open up a space, while dark colours can create a cave-like environment for you to crawl into and escape.
Near the end of every year, leading paint brands like Benj -
A veteran recalls harrowing flight
via vancouversun.comFlight Lieutenant Roy Borthwick didn’t talk much about the Second World War, but occasionally he sat down, put pen to paper and shared his memories with pals in the Burma Star Association — B.C. Branch.
Here is one experience:

The Pacific to make a design statement in downtown Vancouver
via vancouversun.comThe Pacific, Grosvenor Americas’ striking addition to Vancouver’s skyline, is one of those buildings that will serve as a beacon that guides visitors to the city’s downtown.
But its developers, architects and interior designers have also spent a lot of time and energy making sure The Pacific “feels like home” to those who move into the building when it is complete in 2021.
“We ascribe to the idea that we want it to be a timeless home that in 10 years from now -
Fire damages several units at Surrey U-Haul storage facility

It’s not known what started the blaze.

Traffic was redirected as flames and thick smoke flowed from the building before the fire was put out.

Three Remembrance Day stories that show Canadians still care
via vancouversun.comMany Canadians don’t have a personal connection to overseas wars and veterans, but as healthy poppy sales and large crowds that gather around cenotaphs across the country every Nov. 11 indicate, the service and sacrifice of Canada’s soldiers and veterans are not forgotten.
More than 115,500 Canadians died in the First World War, the Second World War and the Korean War. Another 188 have been killed since then in peacekeeping missions and the war in Afghanistan.

Producer on Arrow, Supergirl and other Vancouver-shot shows suspended over sexual harassment allegations
via vancouversun.comThe latest explosive sexual-harassment allegations to hit Hollywood have been levelled at an executive producer with ties to some of Vancouver’s top television series.
Andrew Kreisberg, a producer on CW shows Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow — all of which are filmed in whole or in part in British Columbia — has been suspended by Warner Bros. TV Group after Variety magazine said 15 women and four men came forward with the allegations.

Opinion: Full public inquiry examining health impacts of fracking and LNG in B.C. needed
via vancouversun.comPrior to last spring’s provincial election, the B.C. NDP promised to appoint a panel to examine the impacts of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, in B.C., a review that would include an investigation into the natural gas industry’s impacts on water, earthquakes and greenhouse gas emissions.
As an organization concerned about human health and welfare, we believe that such an inquiry, however well intentioned, would be much too limited in scope and should be expanded to a full public i -
Editorial: This Remembrance Day, we have much to remember
via vancouversun.comLest we forget.
The phrase — taken from Rudyard Kipling’s 1897 poem, Recessional, and before that from the Book of Deuteronomy in the Bible — has been uttered with reverence since King George V launched Armistice Day in 1919 to honour the estimated 1.1 million Commonwealth soldiers who died during the First World War.
Over time, Remembrance Day evolved to also honour the 5.3 million or so soldiers from other allied nations who gave their lives in that terrible war — the w -
Forests Minister pins hopes on higher-value lumber exports to Asia
via vancouversun.comForests Minister Doug Donaldson is leading a trade mission to China and Japan with hopes of boosting exports of higher-value wood products to the Pacific Rim at a time B.C. will be challenged to maintain timber supplies at home.
After building China into B.C.’s second biggest export market, replacing Japan, lumber producers have seen sales to both countries slide, which makes the mission all the more important considering Canada’s trade dispute with the U.S. over softwood lumber.

Vancouver council motion aims to enhance financial disclosure transparency

Opinion: Reclaiming space for the community by giving the 13th floor to the people
via vancouversun.comThe 13th floor is always the ‘bad luck’ floor.
As long as anyone can remember, residents have not wanted to live on the 13th floor and businesses have not wanted to have their offices on the 13th floor of any building. Because of this phobia, the numbering of floors often omits the 13th floor, moving simply from the 12th to the 14th floor without any explanation. This superstition might be converted into tomorrow’s opportunity.

Opinion: B.C. Bud and what to do with our cannabis entrepreneurs
via vancouversun.comEntrepreneurialism and innovation are key ingredients to Canada’s domestic economy and its international competitiveness. For example, France has a vibrant wine industry, Cuba is recognized for its cigars, China has a strong manufacturing role, and Italy and France have their fashion brands.
To this end, the Government of Canada invests a considerable amount of money and effort into sparking and supporting entrepreneurial activities. For example, government-funded Entrepreneurial Incubator -
Letters: Contracts should be awarded on cost, fairness and skill
via vancouversun.comRe: Horgan likely to make good on vow to unions, Vaughn Palmer column, Oct. 31.
This is déjà vu all over again. A return to the dismal 1990s when unions and special-interest groups were rewarded and the rest of us were excluded and forced to pay the bill. Remember these are the guys who brought us the fast-ferry fiasco in which the province paid over $500 million for three useless catamaran ferries that eventually were sold for about $20 million.
