Vaughn Palmer: Site C panel dismisses some critics claims
via vancouversun.comVICTORIA — While doing serious damage to the credibility of B.C. Hydro this week, the utility commission review of Site C also raised doubts about some positions taken by critics of the controversial hydroelectric project.
The four-member panel discounted the oft-repeated claim – by activist turned cabinet minister Lana Popham among others – that the dam would flood enough land “to feed one million people in perpetuity.”

Twenty-one years ago, Whistler came up with the idea of throwing a big party in November to liven up the lull between summer and ski season. It would feature food and wine, and be called Cornucopia.
Over the years, Cornucopia has expanded from one weekend to two, and then the week in between. More dinners were added, along with more lunches, seminars and speakers, as well as grand tastings, beer, spirits and -
Anthony Gismondi: B.C. wineries set for Supreme Court fight
via vancouversun.comIt’s been a tumultuous year for Canadian wine, leaving the industry with more questions than answers about its future and no single voice speaking out about what can be done.Earlier last month we let you know that five small B.C. wineries were petitioning the Supreme Court of Canada to intervene in an appeal of the Comeau case regarding a New Brunswick man fined $292.50 for violating the New Brunswick Liquor Control Act that limits personal liquor importation to 12 pints of beer or one bot -

When I choose a tree for a landscape, its autumn colour is a big factor on my list of must-have attributes. In B.C. we see beautiful yellow-toned trees on our mountains and hillsides, but we’re missing the bril -

Most of the time, “no one sets out to abuse elders,” says Catherine Ludgate, manager of community investment at Vancity.
Instead, patterns settle over time, she says. “It might start with buying mom’s groceries and sl -

Render Music Video Festival
Music videos don’t always get their due as the art that they are. Maybe it’s because you rarely see them on the big screen, where everything just seems a little more artistic. Fortunately, that’s not a problem at Render, Canada’s only music video festival, which goes Friday night at Vancity Theatre. “Render’s focus is on innovative and cut -

Softwood lumber dispute in a 'Groundhog Day loop,' says Horgan
via vancouversun.comThe softwood lumber dispute has hit a “bit of a Groundhog Day loop,” Premier John Horgan said Thursday, as the U.S. Department of Commerce issued its final determination for punitive duties against Canadian lumber imports.
Horgan said Canada and the U.S. had a narrow window to reach a trade agreement, but negotiations couldn’t get past protectionist interests in the U.S. industry.
That kept the American trade litigation on track for Thursday’s decision on tariffs, which&n -

On Monday, Statistics Canada released its August economic growth numbers, which showed the economy contracted. Low and behold, economists and the media reacted immediately: “Canada’s shrinking economy signals slowdown could be worse than feared,” proclaimed the lead article on The National Pos -

Vaughn Palmer: Columbia River Treaty interesting option as NDP ponders Site C
via vancouversun.comVICTORIA — Tucked into the back pages of the B.C. Utilities Commission review of Site C is an intriguing discussion of a replacement source of electricity that wouldn’t require B.C. to build anything.
The option, laid out in a seven page annex, would see B.C. reclaim its entitlement to a share of the power generated on the US side of the border under the 50-year-old Columbia River Treaty.
Essentially, B.C. (standing in for Canada) agreed to build a series of dams on our side of the b -
