Douglas Todd: “Visible minority” now meaningless term in Metro Vancouver, Toronto
via vancouversun.comNew Canadian census data reveals the term “visible minority” has become virtually meaningless across Metro Vancouver.
The region’s five largest municipalities now have fewer whites than people of colour, which means Caucasians are a “visible minority” in Richmond, Surrey, Burnaby, Coquitlam and the city of Vancouver.
The 2016 Canadian census data on ethnicity and immigration, released Wednesday, also shows the foreign-born population of Metro Vancouver has risen to -

ART SEEN: City thinks outside the box with artist-in-residence in engineering
via vancouversun.comWhen the city builds the next protected bikeway, could it be both functional and fun? What about sewers: is there a different and maybe greener way to design them? And don’t forget the little things: is there a better way to build specialized broom holders for trucks?
Some, or none of them, could be part of a new program to marry art and engineering in the city of Vancouver.
The city is looking to embed three artists for consecutive 18-month periods in the engineering department. The innov -
Abandoned, sunken ship on Vancouver Island underscores need for updated law: MP
via vancouversun.comLADYSMITH — A New Democrat MP from B.C. is criticizing the federal government for failing to act quickly enough to deal with derelict vessels.
The complaints come days after the 27-metre Anapaya, a wooden fishing boat, sank in Ladysmith Harbour.
Nanaimo-Ladysmith New Democrat MP Sheila Malcolmson spoke during Question Period on Tuesday calling the sinking the “latest example of the Liberal’s failed boat-by-boat approach on abandoned vessels.”

Letters: Time to act against foreign-funded saboteurs
via vancouversun.comRe: Time to question outside influence on oil debate, Opinion, Oct. 7.
It’s a pity that The Vancouver Sun attached such a wimpy headline to Barinder Rasode’s powerful column on the pernicious influence of the California-based Tides Foundation on Canada’s resource industries. Your timid, “Time to question outside influence on oil debate,” obscures the fact that other commentators, including Vivian Krause in this very newspaper, have been calling for investigation of -

Census: Declining home ownership in suburbs among younger residents mirror national trends
via vancouversun.comVancouver has been a city of more renters than owners going back many decades. And between the 2011 and 2016 census numbers on housing released Wednesday, there was a modest increase in the percentage of people who rent in Vancouver that doesn’t speak much to the angst felt in this city over housing unaffordability.
But a drill into the rising number of renters in suburban areas and among certain age groups over a decade reveals how Vancouver, the country’s most expensive real estate -
