The response to Canada’s opioid overdose problem should elevated as a national issue with a significant, harm reduction approach, new NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh argued during his first visit to Vancouver as party head.
“Thousands of people are dying in our country as a result of this crisis and it needs to be named a national crisis first,” said Singh, speaking during a media availability Friday after taking a tour of Chinatown.

Off-duty paramedic among three men who died in Fernie arena ammonia leak

Overdose crisis claims average seven lives per week in Vancouver: VPD

Vancouver police recorded three suspected drug overdose deaths in the week ending Oct. 9, which is less than that average, but brings the overall toll to 275 deaths to that date in 2017 with more than two-and-a-half months left before the end of the year.

TransLink mayors ask for carbon tax revenue to fund transit projects
via vancouversun.comMetro Vancouver mayors are asking for a portion of the revenue from proposed provincial carbon tax increases over the next four years to be dedicated to funding transit and transportation projects in the region.
The proposal was made as part of the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation submission to a standing committee that is holding consultations on the 2018 provincial budget.

via vancouversun.comA 32- year-old Surrey man has been arrested and charged with attacking a SkyTrain passenger.
The incident happened shortly before 7:30 p.m. on Monday night in Surrey, says Metro Vancouver Transit police spokeswoman Anne Drennan.
The victim boarded the SkyTrain at King George Station and sat down. He was making a call on his mobile phone when another man boarded the train.
