B.C. restaurant staffing crisis: Low wages, small workforce leaves booming eateries without chefs
via vancouversun.comThe restaurant industry may be booming in British Columbia, but a combination of the high cost of living, tight profit margins and a shrinking workforce has made it difficult for kitchens to find enough staff.
Eric Pateman, president of Edible Canada, said the company’s restaurant on Vancouver’s popular tourist destination Granville Island has been short anywhere from two to five chefs at a time for more than two years. That’s meant scaling back the restaurant’s hours or -

B.C. pharmacists call for immediate expansion of services to remote communities

Whales show brains, social interaction go together: study
via vancouversun.comThe rich social interaction and highly evolved brains of some whales are linked in a kind of evolutionary feedback loop, a newly published paper suggests.
The research, largely done at the University of British Columbia, sheds new light on similarities between whale and human evolution.
“Similar pressures and possibilities in the environment can select for a similar outcome,” said Kieran Fox, now a post-doctoral student at California’s Stanford University and co-author of the n -

Daily Poll: Do you support this school's ban on Halloween costumes?
via vancouversun.comA school in Winnipeg has banned Halloween costumes and instead, will replace the usual Oct. 31 festivities with four dress-up days the same week.
Ecole Sage Creek School principal Marc Poirier said the decision was made following a length discussion with staff and a student committee. Some of the reasons for the costume ban was to avoid the possibility of scary or gory costumes and prop weapons, or other costumes that are cultural insensitive or inappropriate.

Vancouver Sun music reviews: Oct. 16, 2017
via vancouversun.comP!nk: Beautiful Trauma (Sony Music): Five years since The Truth About Love and three since the You+Me project with City and Colour, P!nk returns with an album that shows her largely keeping the course with upbeat, electro-tinged material that packs in some edge. Working with hitmaker Jack Antonoff (Taylor Swift, fun), songs such as What About Us are the arena-friendly, EDM-tinged type of song that Swift dropped on 1989. This makes tracks such as the title tune, Revenge, and a few others certain -

Opinion: We must act now to save the heart of a mighty river

Opinion: NDP should bring in total ban on grizzly bear hunting

Vancouver byelection reflects a rising sense of frustration
via vancouversun.comVancouver’s first civic byelection in 25 years revealed a rising sense of frustration among the public, according to both upstart politicians and longtime rivals who gained ground on the reigning Vision Vancouver party — as well as Vision’s own mayor.
