via vancouversun.comVICTORIA — A promised referendum on changing B.C.’s electoral system will be done by mail-in ballot next fall rather than being linked to the 2018 municipal elections.
Attorney General David Eby introduced legislation Wednesday to authorize the vote, which will be held “before the end of November 2018,” according to a news release.

A large majority of parents in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley — 79 per cent — say their children aged six to 12 perform better in school because of enrolment in out-of-school programs, according to a poll by Insights West.
And fully 93 per cent said out-of-school programs have allowed their kids -
A guided tour of India's delights
via vancouversun.comWe could have easily chosen to see India alone as English is the official language and widely spoken; however my wife and I chose to book a 2-week tour, and I am glad we did.
My tour started off in New Delhi and then headed south to Jaipur. The “Pink City”, as Jaipur is also known as, comes from the many buildings that are constructed using the pink colored rocks and clay that surrounds the city. The color and architecture of this beautiful city give it a very exotic appearance. I li -

The Lost World of Genghis Khan
via vancouversun.comFor weeks, the heat has been building across central Asia. The days smoulder like a wet fuse. Desert mirages send distant mountains airborne, and form phantom lakes amid the Gobi bleakness. There’s something in the air now, some threat that drives the grey cranes south and sets the Buddhist prayer flags riffling. August has turned to September in Mongolia, and the great wheels of nature are in motion.
And one million Mongolian herders — one of the world’s largest remaining noma -

Vancouver police remind eligible daters to be wary of online predators
via vancouversun.comThe person on the other side of your dating app may seem like your soulmate but they’re still a stranger.
That’s the reminder the Vancouver Police is putting out there in their new safety campaign that seeks to arm eligible singles with tips on approaching the world of online dating.
In recent years, police have noticed an increase in online dating as the reason for initial contact in sexual assault and fraud cases, spurring the campaign announced Wednesday.

B.C. Wildfire Service tally exceeds $500 million after disastrous summer
via vancouversun.comBritish Columbia has spent more than $500 million battling dozens of wildfires during the 2017 forest fire season.
Fire information officer Kevin Turcott says total suppression costs to date amount to almost $548 million.
He says that’s nearly nine times the original budget of $63 million and far above the $382 million spent in 2009, which officials say was the previous highest cost.
Hundreds of wildfires have been recorded in the province since April 1 as B.C. endured its worst-ever fire -
ART SEEN: Black women drawn in fabric in powerful exhibition at Unit/Pitt
via vancouversun.comAn exhibition of portraits at Unit/Pitt does something unusual, at least in Vancouver: it brings strong black women into the house of art.
The portraits are a wonderful combination of craft and concept. They’re made with thread and different kinds of coloured, patterned material most often used by women in the home. They’re not the kinds of materials traditionally used to make art.
Several of the women in We All Know Each Other by Gio Swaby are drawn in black thread. In other p -

Not much is known about the fire at this time, though early morning commuters are advised to steer clear of the area near Olympic Village. It’s believed the fire started around 5 a.m. in a single-storey building housing a metal fabricator.

Parent’s pain, children’s gain: Finding money tough but worth it to save for kids’ education
via vancouversun.comSpace was always tight in Adrienne and Blaine Neufeld’s two-bedroom condo in South Surrey.
“And it’s a little bit squishier now that we have Kash,” says Adrienne, 29, about arrival of their first child.
Elbow room isn’t the only thing scarce these days. Money’s tight, too.
Blaine, 30, works full-time managing and coaching the Surrey Eagles junior hockey team while Adrienne stays home with their 15-month-old son.

Kasey Wilson: Some great ideas for Thanksgiving leftovers
via vancouversun.comBy some measures, the first Thanksgiving dinner I hosted as a married woman was a disaster, but it gave me a lifelong appreciation for holiday leftovers. Like my mother, I invited a houseful of rowdy relatives, but unlike her, I hadn’t mastered the organization and timing that are crucial to a successful feast.
The turkey took forever, and at about 10:30 p.m. my Uncle Brian quipped, “Were we invited to brunch?” I laughed along with my starving guests and raided the freezer for -
Speeding Doctor Fails To Smarten Up
via vancouversun.comSome people just don’t realize when they have been given a break — consider Dr. Benham Beheshti, who was caught speeding in downtown Vancouver along Pender Street.
The Vancouver physician didn’t dispute the ticket until it was too late and, after getting special dispensation to plead his case, was fined only a nominal sum and told to smarten up.
But he didn’t heed the good advice.
Again ignoring legal deadlines, Beheshti appealed the minimal punishment to the province&rsq -

Burnaby’s “Sea to River” bikeway has charming name, but grim mid-section
via vancouversun.comFirst thing: Kudos to Burnaby for creating the Sea to River bikeway, which runs more than 10 kilometres from Burrard Inlet to the Fraser River. And the good thing is it’s not Burnaby’s only bikeway, which is important.
But there’s a second thing: What’s with the mini-disaster that is the mid-section of the Sea to River bikeway?
On a recent cycle from Vancouver to New Westminster, I was pleasantly surprised, as I moved along the Central Valley bikeway, to for the first tim -

The bill was “unprecedented,” Eby declared. Also “sweeping” “aggressive,” “significant” and “urgent.”
The more Eby talked about the bill, the more grandiose were his testimonials, until one had to wonder whether the poor little thing could bear the weight of the ministe -

North Vancouver man grows great pumpkin
via vancouversun.comGrowing huge pumpkins, it turns out, is a bit like why you own a race horse. The victories are great, but the real money is in the next generation.
Take the pumpkin Belgium’s Mathias Willemijns grew last year: it weighed in at more than 2,600 pounds. That set a new world record, and won Willemijns great acclaim.
But forget all that: let’s talk about the seeds.
Willemijns yielded more than 1,000 seeds out of his giant and may have sold each seed for $150.
That’s what North -

via vancouversun.comRe: Downtown Vancouver Landmark prepares to stop its slow spin, John Mackie column, Sept. 28.
Vancouver is fast becoming a city without a soul — a tasteless city of never-ending highrises. When a 44-year-old landmark is to be torn down so developers can make uber millions, there is a problem. Tourists flock to the beautiful cities in Europe, beautiful because of their gorgeous old buildings and human-scale skyline.
We don’t do enough to preserve buildings of historic significance in -
