B.C. winemakers are confident the wildfire smoke that lingered over their vineyards this summer did not taint the grapes, but they won’t know for sure until the winemaking process is complete.
“I’d be surprised if there was smoke taint, at least in the Okanagan,” said viticulturist and winemaker Val Tait, who manages Bench 1775. “But it can be random and unpredictable, so we don’t really know yet.”
Smoke taint happens when a volatile molecule found in sm

Meet the chef: Ned Bell fries a virtuous fish

Q: What motivates and inspires you as a chef?
A: My focus for the past 10 years is and has been healthy lakes, oceans and rivers. So, any time I get a chance to celebrate, cook from, fish in or just generally advocate for the delicious and sustainable seafood that comes from there, that’s my passion and my inspirati -

Review: Coldplay's BC Place concert the best arena show of 2017
via vancouversun.comColdplay’s A Head Full of Dreams tour has played to packed arenas across three continents and nearly three million fans. The U.K. quartet added Vancouver to that list on Sept. 30 with a performance at BC Place that was easily the top arena show of the year.
Right from the opening chords of the tour’s title track, the group’s performance was pure spectacle unlike any other act on the road at the moment.
Any massive venue tour is always a carefully scripted and calculated corpora -
Snapshot: City makes good on promise to tow couple's RV
via vancouversun.comSean Murphy and his wife Brenda had been living in a broken-down RV near the Renfrew SkyTrain station for two months before the City of Vancouver finally made good on a promise last week to tow it away. Postmedia reporter Gordon McIntyre offers a snapshot of their lives leading to the day they lost their home.
You could not have asked for a nicer autumn day. Blue skies, and unusually warm for a late-September.
Sean Murphy headed out early in search of that one last part for his broken-dow -

The meat of the matter: Two Rivers Meats brings old school butchery back into style
via vancouversun.comSay you’re out for dinner and you order a hanger steak and think, I’d like to make that at home. Or you fall in love with calotte in France and decide to cook it back in Vancouver. Or perhaps you swoon for a South American cut of beef called vacio and plan to grill it up for Sunday dinner.
Yeah, good luck with that.
There is a whole wide world of meat out there that hasn’t been readily available to B.C.’s home cooks. Until now.
Later this month, Two Rivers Specialty Meats -
Weekend Poll: Is a $700 fine and impound enough for this new driver?
via vancouversun.comThis week, West Vancouver Police shared details of a new driver who was caught doing nearly double the speed limit on the Upper Limits Highway.
The novice driver was clocked doing 175 km/h in a stretch where the limit is usually 90 km/h. Police issued the driver a $700 fine and impounded his vehicle for a week. The driver was also responsible for the cost of the impound storage “and the long taxi ride home.”

Douglas Todd: How to debate immigration without distorting facts, foes
via vancouversun.comCanada is one of the few advanced countries that can’t seem to hold an authentic public discussion about immigration policy.
Canadian boosters of high immigration and those who oppose it are mutually contemptuous. Their verbal boxing matches are dominated by sloganeering and name-calling.
If Ottawa is ever going to take seriously public opinion to fine-tune its immigration policies, the combatants need to follow a few rules. They may need a referee, who acts fairly when others are losing t -

Green on Queensbury makes for a fine fit in North Vancouver
via vancouversun.comWhen former Deep Cove resident Will Stevens was house-hunting, he looked all around East Vancouver, False Creek and Mount Pleasant, but ultimately ended up coming back to the North Shore.
Not only did he believe he got the biggest bang for his housing buck in purchasing his first home there, he also avoided the dreaded “bidding wars.”
“I heard some very negative experiences about some of the bidding wars to get into entry-level second-hand purchases,” said Stevens, who wo -

Whole girl education nurtures every student to shine

She had spent months in rehearsal with a cast of 56 preparing for this moment in the junior school’s musical, Through the Looking Glass. When the first note of music began, her nervousness evaporated. The lyrics began to f -
Painting comes back from the dead at the Vancouver Art Gallery
via vancouversun.comThe Vancouver Art Gallery is about to open an exhibition about contemporary painting. Some people might be tempted to say, “It’s about time.” To art world insiders, the exhibition signals a big change in the ideology around painting.

Opinion: B.C. finances precarious after just a few months of NDP governance
via vancouversun.comDuring the 2017 election campaign, now-Premier John Horgan successfully convinced many British Columbians that his NDP government would be different than the previous NDP regime, particularly with respect to the province’s finances. Unfortunately, the first few months the NDP’s reign do not augur well for the future of government finances.
Consider just how markedly B.C.’s finances have changed in the few months since the election and what that implies for the future. In the sp -
Letters: Unlike so-called citizen journalism, legacy journalism is accountable
via vancouversun.comRe: Now more than ever, we need legacy journalism, Opinion, Sept. 23.
As an old-school subscriber who reads her newspaper in print form with her morning coffee, but who is also used to getting up-to-the-minute news and watching videos of natural disasters on social media, I was very interested in Shelley Fralic’s article. I was surprised to learn that readership and viewership of these more traditional media go up at times of crisis, and the reasons that Fralic stated make sense, but I thi -
Editorial: On your mark, get set, go — Liberal Party leadership race is on

Vaughn Palmer: Has trust faded for 'open, transparent' Site C review?
via vancouversun.comVICTORIA — The day began with the B.C. Utilities Commission saying it was not in the public interest for the public to know too much about the troubles with the Site C project.
At issue were specifics about budget overruns, schedule delays and the drain on contingency funds on the main civil works contract for the hydroelectric dam now under construction at Site C on the Peace River.
