Gov't tried dozens of times to establish Atlantic salmon on West Coast
via vancouversun.comMore than eight million Atlantic salmon have been intentionally released into B.C. rivers and lakes, beginning more than a century ago.
With the support of the federal government, dozens of attempts were made to establish viable Atlantic salmon populations on the West Coast between 1905 and 1935.
The experiments are documented in studies of salmonid distribution dating to the 1950s and as recently as 2002, which concluded that no spawning populations had survived.

Music reviews: Sept. 25: Moka Only, Bend Sinister, Chelsea Wolfe, more
via vancouversun.comMoka Only: Concert for One (URBNET): It’s funny how you can be a multiple Juno Award-winning rapper and still be a fixture on the West Coast hip-hop underground, too. But that’s what makes Vancouver Island’s Moka Only (born Daniel Denton) so unique. He even digs into this on the hilarious Featuring Drake, where he rhymes on that to make it in his biz of choice “maybe I’d be better off featuring Drake.” But he won’t and he doesn’t go for that style -

Only a handful of artists can pack an arena the size of B.C. Place, with its 54,000-plus capacity. The 1060s, 1970s and 1980s were the decades of the arena rockers — and Taylor Swift, One Direction and Coldplay are some of the only acts to come into stardom post-2000 who can fill the big rooms. Coldplay arrived in Canada in 2000 riding the wave of its full-length debut Parachutes and the single Yello -
Should we consider expropriation for 105 Keefer?
via vancouversun.comEarlier this month, I was walking to the open house presenting Beedie Holdings’ newest application to develop 105 Keefer Street in Chinatown. I passed by the “World’s Thinnest Building” according to the Guinness Book of World Records. At the corner of West Pender and Carrall Street, the building is a curiosity, recently renovated with flashy neon lights. Few people know why the building is only six feet deep — barely thicker than a person lying down.

via vancouversun.comThe Throne Speech delivered on Sept. 8 repeated the New Democratic Party’s election platform and the details of the agreement the NDP and the Green Party struck in May.

Amazon HQ: Where could you put a 100-acre tech campus in Metro Vancouver?

Pinball fans flip out at Vancouver festival
via vancouversun.comThere are two rules on covering pinball tournaments as a reporter.
One: Never refer to the players as pinball wizards.
And two: Never talk to said wizards mid-game.
That was the word at the door of the Vancouver FlipOut Pinball Expo, where hundreds of proficient pinball practitioners racked up scores big and small last weekend on practice and tournament tables.

Dan Fumano: A critical math lesson ahead of next month's Vancouver byelection
via vancouversun.comThe intricacies of Vancouver city council’s vote-counting math means the single seat up for grabs in next month’s byelection counts for a lot.
Much of the news coverage of Vancouver’s byelection has noted that regardless of the result at the polls Oct. 14, Vision Vancouver won’t lose its majority. The departure of Vision Coun. Geoff Meggs to Victoria to work for the new premier left five Vision councillors remaining, with Mayor Gregor Robertson giving the party a single-v -

Some B.C. school boards still struggling to recruit teachers for smaller classes
via vancouversun.comVANCOUVER — The need to hire 3,500 teachers in a rush to reduce class sizes in British Columbia is undermining the recruitment effort at the most expensive and remote districts, the province’s teachers union says.
B.C. Teachers’ Federation president Glen Hansman said a surge in job openings resulted in a “domino effect” with teachers moving around the province to more desirable districts.
