Film production activity in B.C. is at a “all-time high,” according to the latest numbers released by the provincial government on Saturday.
For the 2016-17 fiscal year, film and TV productions spent an estimated $2.6 billion in B.C., an all-time high. That figure represents a more than 35 per cent increase in spending compared to the previous fiscal year, which saw $1.9 billion flow into the province.

Style update brightens, blends out natural silver
via vancouversun.comDiane Jamieson, 56, is retired and wanted to treat herself to a style update.
Jamieson has thick and previously coloured hair. She has a lot of silver outgrowth, and was frustrated with the amount of maintenance it needed. I wanted to brighten up her overall colour to complement her blue eyes and complexion, as well as to eliminate the brassy tones from her existing colour.
I also wanted to create a formula that would soften and blend out the natural silver in her hair. I started by applying a t -
Kidney donation allows Burnaby mom to take care of dying son
via vancouversun.comRobin Gage’s son Bryan lived for seven months after the Burnaby mom got a life-saving kidney transplant. The extra time together was a gift, made possible by a stranger.
In December of 2015, Gage sent a Christmas letter to family and friends titled “Robin needs a kidney, and she really hates to ask for help.”
Struggling with kidney failure and facing a 10-year wait for a transplant, Gage hoped to find a live donor so she could continue to care for her 28-year-old son Bryan, who -

via vancouversun.comFor decades, Simon Fraser University’s sports teams have played under the name The Clan to honour the Scottish heritage of the man the school was named after.
But a new petition is calling for the university to change that name, in response to the racially charged unrest south of the border.

Southside takes a quiet, but amenity-rich location
via vancouversun.comLouise Roos couldn’t stay away from the South Surrey site where her new home was going up. As a former welder-turned-structural engineer, she couldn’t resist dropping by — almost daily — to see how Miracon Development and its crew were doing in building her single-family home.
“They told me ‘Well, you can go inside, Louise, but just don’t start giving orders to workers,’” she laughed. “I was able to look at everything, from geotechnical -

Todd: Taxpayer funding of politics the norm in democracies
via vancouversun.comBritish Columbia took a step this week to join the club of advanced democracies.
But you might not realize it, in light of the feverish reaction to the B.C. NDP’s proposed bill to ban corporate, union, foreign and out-of-province political donations.
The Opposition B.C. Liberals stirred up a surge of media attention by hammering one section of the proposed bill, which asks taxpayers to directly finance part of the budgets of political parties.

Music brightens the often bleak lives of elderly in residential care
via vancouversun.comWith one thin, veined hand over the other, he tapped in time as the Borealis String Quartet played a very special concert.
Across the room, a woman nodded her head along with the beat, while a man closed his eyes, perhaps transported somewhere else. Still, another woman looked slightly alarmed as violinist Patricia Shih occasionally rose and twisted in her chair, fully engaged with the music.
Of course, there were critics. “They’re playing too loud,” a man said to the woman nex -
Opinion: Legacy journalism? We need it now, more than ever

Because this is what we do when the news is so big and so disastrous.
