A B.C. Supreme Court judge acquitted a Fort St. John man Friday on four terrorism charges related to dozens of Facebook posts he made supporting the Islamic State and lone-wolf attacks.
Justice Bruce Butler said that Othman Hamdan’s posts are offensive to most Canadians, but that doesn’t mean that he was encouraging or inciting acts of murder, assault and mischief as alleged by the Crown.

ART SEEN: The painting that Claude Monet kept for himself
via vancouversun.comWhat was it about this painting that made Claude Monet hesitate?
Monet struggled to complete a series of paintings of the Thames during visits to London between 1899 and 1901. He started somewhere around 100 canvases in an effort to capture the city’s elusive combination of sunlight, fog, smoke, and mist. Frustrated, he cancelled one planned exhibition of his London paintings in a rage because he said he “never wanted to think of them again.”
After what he described a -
Surrey RCMP release composite sketches of sex assault suspect
via vancouversun.comSurrey RCMP have released three composite sketches of the man they believe sexually assaulted a woman in southeast Surrey earlier this month.
On Sept. 13, a woman was assaulted while walking her dogs in Hi-Knoll Park. She told police she was able to fight the attacker off and retreat to safety.
Police later tied that assault to two other incidents involving a suspicious person around the same time and location.
The suspect is described as a white male in his late teens, 5-foot-8 -
Todd: Men do well in science and tech, lag elsewhere
via vancouversun.comIt’s assumed that men generally do well in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, collectively known as STEM.
In light of this, high-profile efforts are usually aimed at encouraging more girls and women to move into STEM.
But there’s a big kicker to men’s success in STEM: Young males aren’t doing at all well in other fields.
New Canadian research says high-school girls are, on average, doing as well as boys in STEM — plus they’re -
Conversations That Matter: Smartphone, dumb driver
via vancouversun.comThis week Conversations That Matter features Mark Milner of ICBC’s road safety program, which is devoting more and more resources to discouraging distracted driving.
It’s a fight that Milner admits is challenging because “apps are designed to get your attention.” Unfortunately, the apps are playing a significant role in driving up accident rates.
“The average person touches their phone up to 2,000 times a day and the addicted user up to 5,000,” he sa -

This Week in History: 1858-2017 A glimpse at British Columbia when it was 'The New El Dorado'
via vancouversun.comThere was only one newspaper in British Columbia in July, 1858. It wasn’t even called British Columbia until a month later – Vancouver Island was then a separate colony from the mainland, which was known as New Caledonia.
When gold was discovered that spring in the Fraser Canyon, American newspapers gave the future B.C. another name: “The New El Dorado.”
How do I know? Because last week I found a July 17, 1858 copy of Harper’s Weekly in an antique store in Olympia, -
Rumours suggest changes coming to feds' tax reform proposal: B.C. minister
via vancouversun.comBritish Columbia’s finance minister is citing rumours that the federal government intends to back off on elements of its proposed tax reforms that have drawn heavy criticism from small business owners across the country.
Speaking to the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade on Friday, Carole James said she would be surprised if the Canadian government did not make adjustments in light of the backlash since unveiling its tax plans over the summer.

Anthony Gismondi: Only the fittest survive in today's B.C. wine industry
via vancouversun.comThe British Columbia wine business was turned upside down last week with the sale of three, well-known estate wineries in Tinhorn Creek Vineyards, Gray Monk Cellars and Black Hills. The buyer was Andrew Peller Limited, an Ontario-based public company that paid $95 million.
Together, the three wineries produce some 125,000 cases of wine totalling some $24.5 million in annual sales and own about 250 acres of vineyards across the Okanagan Valley.
As shocked as some were by the sales, all three wine -

B.C.'s First Chief Judge Haunts Law Society
via vancouversun.comThe ghost of pioneering B.C. justice, Sir Matthew Begbie — the Hanging Judge to some — has come back to haunt the Law Society of B.C.
The professional regulator’s benchers this spring unanimously exorcised from its lobby a statue of the legendary chief judge.
And they scrubbed references to him from the society’s image as offensive to Indigenous people.
But the colonial-era jurist who brought law-and-order to the two colonies that were the cornerstones of the province has -
REAL SCOOP: Another former inmate sues government for jail assault
via vancouversun.comI have written many stories over the years about some of the violence in B.C. jails. There have been gang-linked attacks like the life-altering assault on Jesse Margison in North Fraser Pretrial jail in 2012. Margison still has an outstanding suit against the government that has not yet gone to trial.
Now, another former NFPC inmate has just filed a suit against the B.C. government after he was beaten in an unprovoked attack two years ago.
Here’s my story:
Former North Fraser inmate files -
Opinion: Reflecting on Japanese-Canadian redress
via vancouversun.comSept. 22, 2017 is the 29th anniversary of the Redress Agreement negotiated between the National Association of Japanese-Canadians (NAJC) and the Canadian government.
It is the day Canada apologized to Japanese-Canadians for stripping their rights as citizens, confiscating their properties and relocating 22,000 men, women and children who had been branded “enemy aliens” into relocation centres and internment camps 100 miles away from the B.C. coast. Seventy-five percent were naturaliz -
Opinion: Don’t let semantics stop momentum on child care
via vancouversun.comThe early days of a new government are always tough. There are many choices at hand, decisions to be made and voters to please. In the case of B.C., the agreement between the province’s NDP and the Green party adds a layer of intricacy that has not been present in decades.
Still, there is an issue that should not be allowed to fall through the cracks as a new premier and his government figure out the path of our province for the next four years: childcare.
During the provincial campaign, t -

Mayor wants to know when trains carry hazardous goods through his town
via vancouversun.comThe train tracks running through Vanderhoof helped build the community on the banks of the Nechako River. But some fear they could one day ruin it.
When local politicians meet for the annual Union of B.C. Municipalities conference in Vancouver next week, they’ll consider a resolution drafted by the District of Vanderhoof calling on Transport Canada to order railways to provide “up-to-the-minute” information on hazardous goods being transported through their communities.

Vaughn Palmer: Rush review on Site C digs up a myriad of mysteries
via vancouversun.comVICTORIA — The B.C. Utilities Commission barely made the cabinet-imposed deadline for a preliminary report on Site C this week, posting the findings just four hours before the clock ran out at midnight Wednesday.
The New Democrats, in haste, had given the commission six weeks to produce a first take on financial and other concerns about the B.C. Liberal-launched multibillion-dollar hydroelectric project.
Confined to that tight time frame, the independent commission came back with a re -

TransLink looking for new source of funding to pay for Pattullo Bridge
via vancouversun.comAfter months of uncertainty, TransLink hopes to have funding in place for a new Pattullo Bridge and a slew of major transit projects by the end of this year.
The regional transit authority is counting on money from the provincial government to move ahead with the bridge and the second phase of a 10-year transit transportation plan, but the outcome of the May provincial election and subsequent political upheaval left many mayors anxious about meeting timelines associated with the projects.

Utility commission's top question: If not Site C, what?
via vancouversun.comSome of the biggest questions that need better answers in the B.C. Utilities Commission’s review of the $8.8-billion Site C dam are about power sources that could replace the mega-dam if it were cancelled, according to commission chairman David Morton.
After just six weeks of collecting submissions from B.C. Hydro, the public and expert consultant Deloitte LLP, the Commission released an interim report that detailed 73 questions it needs B.C. Hydro to answer before making recommendations t -

Pre-sale condo buyers at cancelled Langara West project contest developer's offer
via vancouversun.comOver a third of pre-sale condo buyers at the cancelled Langara West project in the Cambie Street corridor are challenging the developer’s offer to return their deposits, plus interest and an additional 50 per cent of their downpayment, in exchange for a release.

Need more exercise? Housework counts, study finds
via vancouversun.comYou can derive a health benefit from 150 minutes of exercise a week and it doesn’t matter if you get there walking to work or pushing a vacuum, according to a large international study.
Meeting that minimum activity level reduces the risk for death by 28 per cent and reduces heart disease by 20 per cent.
And, there is virtually no ceiling to the effect. The benefits increase with every extra active minute, even above 750 minutes of activity a week, said Dr. Scott Lear, principal investigat -
Cannabis job fair attracts hundreds in Vancouver
via vancouversun.comOn Thursday morning, Marco Cacchione put on a black button-up shirt, combed his hair, and walked down Robson Street to a job fair, hoping to snag a gig in an industry that is quickly emerging from the underground.
After a decade as a line cook, currently at one of Vancouver’s casual fine-dining chains, the 28-year-old said he is ready to make the leap into cannabis, which is expected to be legalized next July. The industry will require thousands of workers to meet the likely demand. -

Renting in Vancouver: $1,500 gets you 610 square feet
via vancouversun.comWe all know by now that for the first time the average rent in Vancouver has smashed through the $2,000-a-month ceiling, but here’s another way of looking at the high cost of living: The bang-for-your-buck scale, if you will.
If you pay US$1,500 a month ($1,875) for your rental unit, the average space that would get you in Vancouver is 610 square feet.
That’s comparable to what you’d get in cities such as Chicago or Copenhagen, and not that much less than the 674 square feet yo
