Raise-a-Reader: Literacy program in South Vancouver leads to career options for mom
via vancouversun.comThe first time Joselyn Cortado brought her daughter to the literacy program at South Vancouver Neighbourhood House, there was no doubt about it: little Khloe loved the whole experience.
Despite being the first time the three-year-old was with a group of strangers, she didn’t hold back at all. She loved playing with new friends and listening to stories read from a book. She loved eating fruit during snack time and drawing art.
“She was never scared,” Joselyn said about Khloe.

Opinion: Megaprojects like Site C bankrupt power utilities
via vancouversun.comWhile the recently elected NDP government has kicked the controversial Site C hydro dam to the British Columbia Utilities Commission (BCUC) for review, the project is part of a larger disease afflicting public power utilities: megaprojects. If the track record of megaprojects is anything to go by, B.C. electricity customers should be very nervous.
The Site C dam exhibits many of the same traits afflicting other megaprojects: an undermining of the regulatory system that was explicitly put in plac -

Opinion: Proposed Pebble Mine a non-starter for Alaska
via vancouversun.comBy now, Alaskans have come to the unfortunate realization that the proposed Pebble Mine — a potentially massive gold and copper mine owned by a Vancouver company — is not dead. A new administration in Washington, D.C. that is taking a vastly different approach to resource management is giving fresh life to a proposal to build a mine in an ecologically sensitive and economically important area of the state.
For many in the Bristol Bay region in southwest Alaska, timing of the Pebble L -
Letters: Antidote to technology overload — go outside
via vancouversun.comRe: Stunted Development, Opinion, Sept. 11
Thank you for publishing the opinion piece Stunted Development. The points that Calvin White makes regarding the manner in which technology is destroying the intellectual and emotional functions of humans, particularly our youth, was timely. His comparison of this issue to the fentanyl crisis illustrates how society focuses on the urgent matters that face us, often to the detriment of the longer-term important matters that face us — such as the th -

Sept. 15 to Oct. 7 | Pacific Theatre
Tickets and info: $20 to $36.50 at pacifictheatre.org
At first (and second) glance, The Christians doesn’t seem like the kind of edgy work that appeals to the off-Broadway crowd.
It’s not a post-Rapture fantasy like HBO’s The Leftovers. Nor is it a slightly subversive musical, like The Book of Mormon. Instead, it’s about actual nuts-and-bolts doctrine. But although a play that revolves around soteriology (the doctrine of -
Vaughn Palmer: Weaver uses minority muscle to negotiate with NDP
via vancouversun.comVICTORIA — As Andrew Weaver tells it, the power-sharing agreement with the New Democrats does not oblige the Greens to support every spending item in an NDP budget, just the overall budget itself.
The Green leader’s interpretation came to the fore this week after the NDP decision to leave out election promises of $10-a-day child care and a $400 renters grant from the budget update.
The exclusions were convenient for Finance Minister Carole James as she had used up all of the spe -
Harrison Mooney: Canucks open training camp in search of a playoff spot — as they should be
via vancouversun.comIf you think the Vancouver Canucks, who kicked off training camp Wednesday at Rogers Arena, are going to make the playoffs this season, you’re safely in the minority.
If you think the Canucks should try to make the playoffs this season, you might be in the minority there as well.
Canucks fans find themselves in a strange position these days. Recent history shows that the best way to go from bottom to the top is to lose, often for several years, collecting all sorts of high-end talent -

B.C.'s boom not pulling people out of poverty
via vancouversun.comWhen it comes to B.C.’s low-income earners, the latest census figures tell a tale of stagnation and a lack of progress in reducing inequality despite an economic boom.
