Hollywood North: Anna Kendrick taking over from Santa
via vancouversun.comActress Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect, Up In The Air), who spent a lot of time in Vancouver filming the Twilight trilogy, is returning next month for much jollier project.
Kendrick is set to star in a still to be titled Christmas movie in which she plays Nicole Clause, daughter of Santa, who is forced into the family trade after her father retires and her brother, who is supposed to inherit his role, gets cold feet.
Funnyman Bill Hader (Saturday Night Live, Superbad) is rumoured to co-star.

via vancouversun.comRain returned to Metro Vancouver Friday and with it, a foam-like substance on the roads that leads to slick driving conditions.
Port Moody Fire Rescue offered up a simple explanation for the mysterious substance.
“The white milky substance you see on the roads is a result of fresh rain and oil soaked roads – this is a natural reaction,” the fire department shared on Twitter Friday morning. The white milky substance you see on the roads is a result of fresh rain and oil soaked ro -

Review: Shylock meets the sensitivity police
via vancouversun.comShylock
To Sept. 15 | Bard on the Beach, Vanier Park
Tickets and info: From $21, at www.bardonthebeach.org
With his exaggerated nose and protruding teeth, dirty straggly hair and layers of ugly clothing (hiding what?), this Shylock spits out his desire for revenge, his glee in collecting the pound of flesh owed him by the Christian merchant Antonio.
This Shylock is the quintessential ugly, grasping Jew of centuries of European anti-Semitic myth and propaganda, a figure that found its ultim -
Mum's the word for a pop of late-season colour
via vancouversun.comYou see them everywhere right now, adding life to our overheated summer gardens, decks, patios and even our front steps. Chrysanthemums add that fresh pop of colour when we need to replace tired, burnt, heat-stressed summer annuals. They have become a late summer staple in so many gardens, and a much-welcomed introduction to autumn colour.
Many local growers do an amazing job with these fall icons. One of the largest and most innovative producers is DeVry Greenhouses in C -

Douglas Todd: Top moral thinkers defend free speech in UBC clash
via vancouversun.comTwo of North America’s leading moral thinkers are defending a University of B.C. philosophy student who has provoked a far-reaching clash over free speech.
Noted UBC philosophy professor Paul Russell and well-known American psychologist Jonathan Haidt believe some UBC academics are over-reacting to student Franz Kurtzke’s August distribution of flyers on campus.
Kurtzke, a fourth-year philosophy student, sent out 1,000 emails and distributed 500 flyers in which he criticized soc -

Fall Arts: Where to spend your concert dollars
via vancouversun.comThere are two big touring seasons in the music industry: Summers feature the festival circuit, and see major acts hitting hot-spots all over the planet. Fall is reserved for arena tours in support of new releases, and a push by up-and-coming acts to try to get some of that sweet back-to-school action on college campuses. (It’s not a coincidence so many tours coincide with the space of time between mid-terms and exams.)
With the changes to the music business bands only make their money on t -
Fed-up Surrey residents threaten to block road to slow speeders
via vancouversun.comUpset with motorists who treat her residential street “like a freeway,” Christina Eden is threatening to block 71A Avenue in Surrey to slow speeders.
“I know it sounds extreme, but I’ve had it,” she said Thursday. “If we have to, we’ll go out on the road and slow them down ourselves.”
Every day, in the morning and afternoon, drivers hoping to avoid the traffic on 72nd Avenue and 144 Street blast through Eden’s quiet Newton neighbourhood. Sinc -
B.C. 'honour' killing: Supreme Court restores extradition orders for mother, uncle
via vancouversun.comOTTAWA — The Supreme Court of Canada has cleared the path for extradition of two B.C. residents to India to face murder charges in a so-called honour killing.
In a 9-0 judgment Friday, the high court set aside a British Columbia Court of Appeal ruling that put the brakes on extradition over concerns about whether the two accused would be fairly treated in India. The Supreme Court also restored federal surrender orders in the high-profile case.

Fall arts classical: Short season filled with events to tantalize
via vancouversun.comOur autumn performance season is actually the shortest where classical music is concerned: just a week or two of September, plus October and November, before the onslaught of holiday music.
Fortunately, our major players start as they mean to go on, with events designed to tantalize. The big news for 2017-18 is restructuring. At the Vancouver Symphony this is Bramwell Tovey’s last year as music director. The implications are enormous, however smooth the transition may prove. The best news -
Fall arts books: Three great local reads
via vancouversun.comWhile summer is always touted as the top reading time, it doesn’t mean that books disappear with the beach towels.
Great stories and interesting tales are just as welcome in turtleneck season.
If you really want to immerse yourself in books, fall is especially rich when it comes to festivals.
Here in B.C. the top fests to check out are the Whistler Writers Festival on Oct. 12-15, the Surrey International Writers’ Conference (Oct. 20-22) and, of course, the Vancouver Writers Festival -
Daily Poll: Is Vancouver a viable destination for Amazon HQ2?
via vancouversun.comOnline retailing giant Amazon is looking to add a second North American headquarters, promising to spend more than US$5 billion to create a ‘full equal’ to its current Seattle hub.
The announcement is expected to set off an intense bidding war between major metropolitan centres to lure the tech behemoth — and the 50,000 high-paying jobs — to their respective cities.
The city of Vancouver said Wednesday that they would be answering the request for proposal and will submit -
Balance needed between parent's choices and child protection
via vancouversun.comPublic policy, whether it is formulated into laws, rules or regulations, is aimed at the outliers, not the vast majority of people who will do the right thing.
Sometimes those policies over-reach as seems to have happened in the case of Adrian Crook and his five children. A single father, Crook is trying to teach his kids aged five to 11 to be independent and able to navigate Vancouver without his supervision.
He started by taking them on public transit — including their 45-minute trips to -
