via vancouversun.comAt about 11 a.m. on Sept. 5, after years of planning and construction, it will finally be official: a ribbon-cutting will open the new $122.6-million Emily Carr University of Art + Design.
The art school, located since 1980 on Granville Island, has moved to a purpose-built building by Great Northern Way on the former industrial site of Finning International between Main and Clark.
The move will mean a big shift in commuting patterns in Vancouver. About 2,300 faculty, staff and full-time students -
Keep your cool in school zones
via vancouversun.comFor 20 minutes, twice a day, from September to June, the quiet dead-end street outside the Delta elementary school where Kristina Mudge sends her daughter becomes absolute chaos.
Parents urge their children from idling vehicles to beat the bell, while others park in front of fire hydrants, driveways and traffic signs.
“They’re rushed and running late and safety goes right out of their heads,” said Mudge. “It’s getting progressively worse.”

Opinion: Ending tolls provides a clean slate for mobility pricing in Metro Vancouver
via vancouversun.comAt first blush, the provincial government’s decision to remove tolls on the Port Mann and the Golden Ears bridges looks like a setback for tackling Metro Vancouver’s crippling traffic. Tolls provide a clear incentive to drive less, take transit or drive at different times. It seems like the province has shifted into reverse.
But dropping tolls represents an opportunity for a more comprehensive approach to reducing traffic. The tolls have long been a point of contention. Perhaps count -

Hot, sunny weather was a mixed blessing for PNE
via vancouversun.comEvery year, PNE president Mike McDaniel prays to the weather gods for blue skies and sunshine during the PNE.
This year, he got his wish — perhaps too much of it.
“I’m not sure if it’s the hottest fair on record, but anecdotally it’s been quite a warm fair,” said McDaniel on Monday, the 15-day fair’s last day. “Half the fair days we have here were unseasonably hot. It’s not something we’re used to.”
Usually, the fair i -
Veteran B.C. high school basketball coach ends career after complaints
via vancouversun.comVeteran high school basketball coach Rich Goulet admits he always had a tough love approach to coaching, but says he never would have expected it to lead to the investigation that ended his career over the summer.
Goulet resigned as a result of what is being called a bungled investigation by Pitt Meadows Secondary into complaints about his coaching style, including “negativity” and yelling at players.
Since 1979, Goulet had coached the Pitt Meadow Marauders senior and junior boys bas -
Lisa Sun and Richmond 'rescue dog turned SuperDog' shine at PNE
via vancouversun.comSome people attend the Fair at the PNE just to see The President’s Choice SuperDogs.
“I’m one of those people!” said SuperDog handler Lisa Sun, before correcting herself. “I was one of those people!”
Sun, a Burnaby native, grew up watching the famous dog show at the PNE and wishing she could be part of it. Then, in 2009, she got her wish.
At the time, Sun had three pugs, two of which had just won championships, impressing the SuperDogs brass.

New Vancouver chat app aims to get people talking
via vancouversun.comHow do you approach someone you’re too shy to talk to? For some, it’s easy enough to go up to the person and say “hi.”
But in this app-loving and chat-obsessed age, many people might prefer to break the ice from the safety of their screen.
That’s where Lipsi, a new location-based anonymous messaging app, might help.
Its goal, said founder Matthew Segal, is to facilitate unlikely interactions.
“Most apps that connect people are almost alw -
