Bounty of produce around for easy Labour Day meals
via vancouversun.comAll fun and food aside, Labour Day does have its roots in the labour movement.
The short version is that in 1869 the Toronto Typographical Union requested a reduction in work hours from 12 to nine per day. They were ignored, and in 1872 the request escalated into a demand and the printers went on strike. They eventually won, though not without pain. Besides establishing a shorter workday, their victory gave us the Labour Day that was passed into law in 1894.

Why is British Columbia so secular?
via vancouversun.comThis question has intrigued me and others for a long time.
I have taken several stabs at answering why the region is so secular, including in the book I edited, Cascadia: The Elusive Utopia – Exploring the Spirit of the Pacific Northwest.
The contributors and I ended up thinking some of the reasons Washington, Oregon and especially B.C. contain more non-religious people than almost anywhere in North America relates to the isolating landscape and the population’s high degree of mobili -

Here's what you should be feeding your kids this fall
via vancouversun.comBack-to-school time undoubtedly calls for a lot of preparation — what with the need for new clothes, new tech gadgets, new textbooks, etc. — and one area that demands a bit of extra attention is food.
“Proper nutrition helps students show up to school prepared to learn,” Jennifer Brott, a registered holistic nutritionist based in Vancouver, says.
While it may not seem like much of an issue to pack the kids off to the bus without a lunchtime snack or meal in tow -

Daily Poll: What's the most pressing issue in the rental market?
via vancouversun.comThis week, B.C.’s Housing Minister Selina Robinson vowed to review the formula used to determine the maximum allowed rent increases.
According to the B.C. Tenancy Act, rent hikes are capped at two per cent plus inflation. Landlords are permitted to raise rents once every 12 months, and tenants must be given notice three months prior to the increase taking effect.
For 2018, that increase has been set at four per cent.Housing advocates, however, would like to see the law changed so that the -

Dan Fumano: A half-century old B.C. snapshot of a city about to 'take off'
via vancouversun.comThe best thing I read this summer had a great-looking cover, but once I got into it, it really started to fall apart.
A trip to the Sunshine Coast this past weekend produced an unexpected discovery inside the walls of a 1963-built cabin: a bundle of repurposed insulation providing a snapshot of a city on the verge of huge change and growth, when the newsroom was bigger and the city much smaller.
A copy of The Vancouver Sun dated Thursday, April 11, 1963, found well-preserved and legible, bu -

Staff Sgt. Dale Carr said in a news release that police responded to reports of a shooting in the 6300-block of 166 Street about 8:45 p.m.
“Once officers were on scene they discovered a deceased male in a vehicle on the driveway of his home,” Carr said.
“The initial investigation has revealed that one vehicle, a light coloured mini van, was seen departing the area.& -
Vancouver Sun letters to the editor for Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2017
via vancouversun.comNotwithstanding their endless bravado while in opposition, NDP Attorney General David Eby and his government now appear to be as spineless as the Liberals they replaced. The first of many cowardly acts initiated by former premier Gordon Campbell years ago was to remove photo radar, calling it “a tax grab.” Now Eby agrees that instead of taxing those who create havoc on our roads (and at ICBC), the rest of us should cover these costs.
And Premier John Horgan, who repeatedly and co -

With less than two months to go before the Oct. 14 byelection, the city’s two largest parties — Vision Vancouver and the NPA — have yet to announce their candidates. But other municipal parties have already unveiled their slates.
This week, OneCity announced two candidates running for one of the nine s -
Ashcroft First Nation, Boston Flats rebuilding, recovering after fire
via vancouversun.comASHCROFT — One day a few weeks ago, as she always had, Angie Thorne finished work in Spences Bridge and drove toward the property where she and her husband Randy have lived for more than 20 years on the Ashcroft Reserve.
She turned off the highway, headed down the two-lane road and waited for a car to pass before turning in to her driveway. It wasn’t until she stopped in front of the hole in the ground that used to be her house that she remembered.
“I pulled right up and b -
Inside a cabin wall, an old snapshot of a city about to 'take off'
via vancouversun.comThe best thing I read this summer had a great-looking cover, but once I got into it, it really started to fall apart.
A trip to the Sunshine Coast this past weekend produced an unexpected discovery inside the walls of a 1963-built cabin: a bundle of repurposed insulation providing a snapshot of a city on the verge of huge change and growth, when the newsroom was bigger and the city much smaller.
A copy of The Vancouver Sun dated Thursday, April 11, 1963, found well-preserved and legible, bu -
Escaped Atlantic salmon found in waters near Sechelt
via vancouversun.comAtlantic salmon believed to have escaped from a collapsed fish farm in Washington state have been found in B.C. waters.
The shíshálh Nation said its fishermen caught three Atlantic salmon in the Sabine Channel near Sechelt on Monday — a discovery that’s prompting alarm bells for the Sechelt band.
“While these Atlantic salmon likely came from south of the border, it must be recognized that invasive species do not recognize borders,” said shí -
Forget Gagner, Hutton could be key to Canucks' woeful power play
via vancouversun.comThat the Vancouver Canucks’ power play was woeful in 2016-17 has been mentioned more than once in these pages.
A search of the archives finds at least 182 mentions, in fact. Not many of those also mentioned the name “Ben Hutton.”
One hopes a search done after the end of this season would turn up more results.
For the Canucks to have any better results in putting the puck in the net, there’s been plenty of talk about what free-agent addition Sam Gagner will bring to the ta -
Vaughn Palmer: Will leadership 'ideals contest' cover Liberals' farce, failure?
via vancouversun.comVICTORIA — The B.C. Liberals tried Tuesday to put the best face on a leadership contest that none of them anticipated before the provincial election results were finalized in May.
Party members will vote the first weekend in February to choose a successor to Christy Clark, six months after her unceremonious departure as leader and MLA for Kelowna West.
“We’re all looking forward to a vibrant contest of ideals that will engage British Columbians and select a leader ready to -
Clydesdale show at PNE a look back in time
via vancouversun.comSitting in the Agrodome, watching Doug McGibbon and his Carlaw Clydesdales put on a horse show is a look back in time to the early days of the PNE.
When the fair was first held in 1910, horse-drawn wagons still ruled the roads. Personal cars were rare.
And that’s without mentioning that the fairgrounds were a long way from town.
“This is how they used to deliver beer,” McGibbon told Postmedia this week about his horses, who are part of a twice-daily show at the Agrodome.
He bel -
Sanghera family loses latest round in civil-forfeiture battle
via vancouversun.comA south Vancouver family that police have linked to organized crime has lost the latest round in a court battle with the director of civil forfeiture over his attempt to seize their properties.
Udham Sanghera and his wife Jaspal had wanted to strike some of the allegations in the civil-forfeiture suit launched by the B.C. government two years ago.
But a master of the B.C. Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that the changes they requested wouldn’t be made. Jaspal Sanghera appealed p -

Energy regulator says Trans Mountain faces more hurdles
via vancouversun.comCanada’s energy regulator says Kinder Morgan has more conditions it has to meet before it can begin construction on its $7.4-billion expansion of the Trans Mountain oil pipeline.
However, the company says it remains confident it will be able to begin construction on the controversial project in September as planned.
In a letter sent last week to update federal Natural Resources Minister Jim Carr on the project, National Energy Board chair and CEO Peter Watson wrote: “Additional compl
