B.C. Liberals open leadership race and set the rules
via vancouversun.comVICTORIA — B.C.’s Liberal party has set the rules for electing a new leader, allowing a longer race, a higher spending cap and a different way to validate the identity of voting Liberal members.
The party announced Tuesday it has opened the race to elect a new leader at a Feb. 4, 2018, convention, following the July 28 resignation of former leader and premier Christy Clark. The timing means the leadership race will be six weeks longer than it was in 2011, when Clark won.

Hot Vancouver sets new summer power consumption record
via vancouversun.comVancouverites must have had their air conditioners on high Monday as B.C. Hydro says the city set a new summer power consumption record.

It is the second power consumption record broken this year. On Jan. 3, in the middle of the city’s longest cold snap in 30 years, B.C. Hydro -

Daphne Bramham: Pride float against Sharia law a go in '11, no in '17
via vancouversun.comShawn Shirazi is angry about cultural relativism and the growing unwillingness of people here to criticize radical Islam for fear of being labelled racist or Islamophobic.
Born in Iran, Shirazi immigrated to Vancouver where he became a founding member of Cirque de So Gay, an activist group of gay and transgender Middle Eastern men. For several years, the group marched in the Pride Parade and even won an award for their originality. But this year, its application was rejected as “culturally -
Go coastal to get the West Coast vibe
via vancouversun.comTofino, B.C. – Getting here is more than half the fun when you take the slow boat(s) to Vancouver Island’s wild west coast.
Sure, you can make it from Vancouver in a day filled with a ferry across the Georgia Strait, a Nanaimo-to-Parksville highway slog and a two-and-a-half-hour Highway 4 swerve to surfing’s “Tough City” – but there’s a mellower, more West Coast way to go.
It starts with a good ride. I was testing a snazzy 2017 Honda Ridgeline for -
B.C. wildfires could leave bears hungry as berries and grasses charred: expert
via vancouversun.comKAMLOOPS — Wildlife experts are warning British Columbia’s severe wildfires could make bears even more troublesome as they fatten up before hibernation.
Wildsafe B.C. provincial co-ordinator Frank Ritcey says there is always increased conflict between bears and humans in autumn, as the bruins search for food.
He predicts this fall will be particularly challenging because huge swaths of the province have been charred by wildfires, killing the berries and grasses bears rely on.

From tolls to mobility pricing: Motorists will still pay more to drive
via vancouversun.comBritish Columbia’s new NDP government will scrap tolls on the Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges on Sept. 1, but motorists should enjoy the free ride while it lasts.
That’s because a commission is investigating mobility pricing options for transportation, which could include bridge tolls and other road usage fees.
The NDP government is now championing the phrase “Toll Free B.C.” — and Transportation Minister Claire Trevena denied in an interview Friday that this slog -
Daily Poll: Are you in favour of a mobility pricing system for Metro Vancouver?
via vancouversun.comWhile bridge tolls are soon to be a thing of the past, Metro Vancouver motorists may eventually be hit with new fees through a mobility pricing system.
In June, the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation and the TransLink established the mobility pricing independent commission to examine scenarios where drivers must pay a fee for every kilometre they travel or a tax for entering downtown.
Mobility pricing systems have been previously introduced in London, Stockholm, Singapore -

Dr. Brian Day: Access to health care is a Constitutional right
via vancouversun.comOur constitutional challenge against government laws that ban private insurance for medical services will resume later this year. In authoritarian regimes, citizens’ rights can be ignored. Life returning to normal in Kamloops as wildfire evacuees head home
