The increasing frequency of record-breaking fire seasons playing out in B.C. is sowing the seeds for severe fire seasons to come, according to the co-author of a recent study.
Each successive fire and the carbon released leads to more drought, crippling the ability of forests to absorb and sequester carbon, said David Galvez, a former researcher at the University of B.C. and University of Alberta.
This year’s forest inferno is being mirrored on every continent, according to the new study e

Vancouver overdose deaths so far this year exceed 2016 total
via vancouversun.comVANCOUVER — More people have fatally overdosed in Vancouver so far this year than in all of 2016, the city says.
It says 232 overdose deaths have been recorded since the beginning of the year. The B.C. Coroners Service reported 231 fatalities for Vancouver last year, many involving the opioid painkiller fentanyl.
The numbers suggest more than 400 deaths are anticipated by the end of the year, the city said in a news release Monday.

Andrew Weaver: Why I’m introducing ride-sharing legislation this fall
via vancouversun.comWe are in an unprecedented era of technological innovation. Just a decade after the launch of the iPhone, three quarters of Canadians now have a smartphone in their pockets. Last year, new installations of emissions-free power surpassed fossil fuel for the first time. We are only three years away from millions of self-driving cars hitting our streets.
While it can be tempting to view such dramatic technological shifts as either thrilling or terrifying, the truth is the effects of new technology -

From the California sun to your table: The Journey of the Almond

Odessa making a difference in one community providing better-built homes for families
via vancouversun.comA typical new home in Metro Vancouver has air leakage rates of five to six times per hour. Nathan Stone, co-founder of Odessa Group, is building homes with half that — or 2.5 air changes per hour — thus meeting stringent energy efficiency standards, but at minimal extra cost to the homeowners.
Instead of using ultra-high performance mechanical systems or materials, Stone is relying mainly on quality building techniques and support from BC Hydro to achieve his goals. As a result, Phas -
Vancouver Sun music reviews

Opinion: Beware of oil lobbyists asking for gifts
via vancouversun.comAs the new NDP government in B.C. considers further support for the natural-gas industry, it should take a long, hard look at the results of the previous Liberal government’s eagerness to please the oil and gas lobby.
We all know that the promised liquefied natural-gas (LNG) boom never materialized, but to get a sense of what else is at play it’s worth reading the 26-page memo sent by the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) to B.C.’s deputy minister of nat -
Letters: Storage is the problem with solar power
