NDP orders review of government reliance on industry-hired experts
via vancouversun.comThe NDP government has ordered a review of B.C.’s controversial “professional reliance” system, which uses experts hired by industry to assess the environmental risks associated with logging, mining and other projects.
Environment Minister George Heyman said in an interview that the province previously relied on its own professionals to protect the public interest. But the Liberal government shifted much of that responsibility to professionals hired by project proponents &mdash -
Fire officials want smoking drivers to stop flicking ashes out windows
via vancouversun.comThree roadside fires in a single day have the Vancouver fire department warning smokers that a fire risk exists here just as much as in the Interior.
“Grass fires on the side of the roadways are still happening and it just is amazing — in the province of B.C. right now, with all the education out there — that people continually drive down the street with their cigarette hanging out the window,” said Joe Foster, an assistant chief with Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services.

Air quality advisory lifted for Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley
via vancouversun.comAn air quality advisory for the Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley caused by smoke from the Interior wildfires has been lifted after almost two weeks.
The advisory was issued Aug. 1 and alerted residents to “fine particulate matter” in the air, which had wafted across the region from wildfires burning throughout B.C.
Changing weather mean much of the haze lifted on Saturday, allowing for the air quality advisory to be cancelled.
However, Metro Vancouver said the advisory could be back -

Updates shared Saturday morning said the fire had jumped the Salmo River and is moving closer toward the electronic music festival, located at the Salmo River Ranch. The growth of the fire prompted officials to expand the evacuation alert to cover the music festival, which began Friday and ends Monday.

The Home Front: The future of rug design
via vancouversun.comRug design manufacturer Nani Marquina believes in moving forward at a constant pace, weaving the history of traditional rug design, and her own company — launched in Barcelona in the late ’80s — into every new collection, while always focusing on the future.
Marquina is celebrating her brand’s 30th anniversary by releasing the Mia collection: her first range of customizable rugs, which clients can order online.

Five Things to Know: Bridge tollers ousted, Lorde coming to PNE

Witness account of fatal coffee shop sucker-punch
More information is trickling out about 22-year-old Michael Page-Vincelli, who died in July after being sucker-punched in a Burnaby Starbucks.

Children of two war-weary men who saved a priceless Dutch art collection from Nazis meet in Vancouver
via vancouversun.comIn the final months of the Second World War, in an underground cavern close to the German front, Dutch art curator Willy Auping would, by lamplight, unveil priceless works of art to a rapt audience of doctors and nurses who were enduring the bitter, final days of the war together.
The underground bunker where the paintings were hidden was in the Netherlands on the grounds of the Kröller-Müller Museum. The museum had been turned into a Red Cross hospital after the nearby city of Arnhem -
Opinion: Human Rights Commission should not be used as a political football
via vancouversun.comPremier John Horgan has announced his government’s intention to re-establish a human rights commission in B.C. “By re-establishing a human rights commission, we will create a more-inclusive and just society, where we work together to eliminate inequality and prevent discrimination on the basis of race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression,” said Horgan.
The previous commission that had been established in January 1997 was dismantled by the Gordon -
Opinion: Drug-checking services could help prevent overdoses
via vancouversun.comIn recent years across B.C., a public-health tragedy has resulted in thousands of preventable deaths from street drugs containing powerful opioids such as fentanyl or its analogs.
Toxicity from adulteration has occurred not just in the heroin supply, but also in stimulants, club drugs and counterfeit pills. Border agents and police have tried to reduce or disrupt the supply, but they have had little success in stemming the tide of illicit drug importation and consequent deaths.

Letters: Movie critic needs a history lesson
via vancouversun.comRe: American revisionism revised, Jamie Portman column, July 28.
Those who ignore, or are ignorant of the lessons of history, are condemned to write embarrassingly ill-informed newspaper articles.
I agree with the professed target of his piece, namely the shameless disregard for historical accuracy often shown by American filmmakers over the years. Unfortunately his article is thoroughly discredited by the writer’s adoption of the same cultural bias and appalling historical ignorance in hi -
Editorial: How to bungle a termination
via vancouversun.com“I think the first virtue is to restrain the tongue,” said Cato the Elder. Had Premier John Horgan and Jobs Minister Bruce Ralston heeded the Roman senator’s sage advice the government appointee they sacked last week would have packed up his paperweights and moved on.
It is, after all, the prerogative of any incoming government to replace key players in the public service with candidates of its own choosing. Horgan and his minister had every right to fire Gordon Wilson, who was -
Smoke gives way to blue skies, but Metro air quality advisory extended

But after a week under a blanket of smoke that’s blocked out seemingly everything about Vancouver’s natural scenery, from the mountains to the ocean to, yes, even the cloudy sky, glimpses of cirri and cumuli in the evening air on Friday were practically a cause for celebration. Is that blue sky I see!?! #BCWildfire #vancouver #clearskies pic.twitter.com/E898sdozOv

'Let's go and get him,' witness heard before man killed in Burnaby Starbucks
via vancouversun.comBURNABY, B.C. — Outside a busy Starbucks in Metro Vancouver, a black-and-white photograph of a young man in a suit and tie sits nestled among flowers, handwritten cards and a bright red ribbon that reads, “Michael.”

18 dead from overdoses in July as first responders combat 'new normal'
via vancouversun.comVancouver police reported 18 probable overdose deaths in the month of July, a decrease from the 26 reported in June, but the opioid crisis shows little sign of slowing down.
Vancouver Fire and Rescue Service reported 568 calls in response to overdoses, a number that, while “extremely high,” according to the city, is similar to the number reported for June.

'John whisperers' may be dispensable in party of smiles
via vancouversun.comVICTORIA — On a recent evening in the capital, the scene outside the premier’s office caught the upbeat mood of an NDP government settling into power after 16 years in the wilderness.
There on the lawn was cabinet minister Mike Farnworth, decked out in new blue jeans, checked shirt and baseball cap.
He’d bought the lot off the rack on discovering, fresh from the cabinet oath-taking, that a quick visit to the Kamloops wildfire centre was his first assignment as solicitor ge -

But Dr. Gordon Edwards said any nuclear detonation would have repercussions beyond the initial cloud of radiation generated by an explosion, as both the United States and North Korea continue to engage in rhetoric around the prospect of a nuclear war.
