On Friday, former premier Christy Clark announced she would be resigning as MLA and leader of the B.C. Liberals.
The move came as a surprise for many in contrast to what’s typically been seen as Clark’s unwillingness to back down.

Fireworks night: TransLink adds extra service for Celebration of Light
via vancouversun.comIt’s a fireworks night.
The Honda Celebration of Light returns to Vancouver’s West End this Saturday, bringing hundreds of thousands to the shoreline surrounding English Bay.
The annual fireworks competition will be held over its usual three nights, with fireworks extravaganzas on July 29, August 2 and August 5, brought to you by teams from Japan, the United Kingdom, and Canada. The team to beat appears to be Japan’s Akariya Fireworks, who won the event in 2014.

Surrey RCMP asks for public's help locating missing man
via vancouversun.comSurrey police need the public’s help in locating a man reported missing after he failed to arrive at work Friday.
Somera Ram Prajabat, 29, was last seen around 3 p.m. near 96 Avenue and King George Boulevard, according to a media release from the RCMP.
Prajabat had left his home in Newton for work near 176 Street and 66A Avenue, but never arrived. His family became concerned when he didn’t arrive home at his usual time that evening, police said.
He is described as 5-foot-3 and about -
Makeover: A fresh look for summer
via vancouversun.comFlorence Harrison is a 60-year-old home organizer and wanted a freshened up look for summer.
Florence has fine hair which is wavy in texture. It’s naturally silver in colour but felt it was looking dull and wanted to brighten it up. I wanted to keep her colour natural looking and thought it could use a little pop as well. I started by applying foil highlights, in a starburst placement, throughout her hair. I used a high-lifting decolourizer to lighten her hair to a platinum blond. I then a -

Vancouver Island man charged with trying to drown police dog
via vancouversun.comA Courtenay man has been charged with trying to drown a police dog during a flight from Chilliwack Mounties earlier this month.
On July 1, Chilliwack RCMP responded to a report of a stolen pickup parked at the Vedder River. One of the occupants, a 26-year-old woman, was taken into custody; but the other, a man wanted in connection with a violent crime spree, took off running.
Police found loaded firearms and ammunition inside the truck.

How immigration battles impact Metro Vancouver's high-tech sector
via vancouversun.comRaza Mirza knows he could earn at least US$40,000 more a year south of the border.
The high-tech engineer, who was recruited to Vancouver from Pakistan in 2008, has watched many of his foreign-born colleagues grab their first high-tech jobs in Metro Vancouver.
But then, as soon as they can navigate the more difficult migration process into the U.S., many have moved to cities like San Francisco, Dallas and Seattle.
For a variety of reasons, Mirza is one of the foreign-born workers who intend to p -
Boy, 16, from Pennsylvania drowns near Twin Falls in Lynn Canyon
via vancouversun.comPolice are investigating the death of a 16-year-old boy visiting from Pennsylvania after he was found floating face-down at Twin Falls Friday afternoon.
Rescuers from the North Vancouver District Fire Services department reportedly performed CPR, and the boy was rushed to Lions Gate Hospital, where he died.
He was reportedly caught by the current and dragged underwater for several minutes.
The area is popular for swimming, but its swift waters have claimed numerous lives over the years. &n -

Etoile adds to Brentwood Town Centre’s urban appeal
via vancouversun.comThe densification that has been happening in the Lower Mainland in recent years has started to produce some attractive and mature urban communities, often centred around mass transit hubs. Brentwood Town Centre in Burnaby is one example, and it’s here that Millennium Development Group has plans for two high-rise residential towers to be collectively known as Etoile.
“The homes we’re offering here are very special in that they are all corner units,” said Peter Marek, direc -
Opportunity to be part of a resort community at The Cottages on Salt Spring Island
via vancouversun.comSalt Spring Island in the Gulf Islands has long been a playground for Metro Vancouver’s affluent, with million-dollar vacation homes being passed down through three or four generations, putting Island life out of reach for many average income earners.
But a resurrected development located on 34 acres on Bullock Lake provides a means for more Lower Mainlanders to purchase a stake on the idyllic Gulf Island. The Cottages on Salt Spring Island were built in the early 2000s as a plan to offer -

Unbeaten Eskimos start strong, finish stronger to tame Lions 37-26
via vancouversun.comBy Shane Jones
EDMONTON — Mike Reilly ran in a pair of touchdowns and passed for two more as the Edmonton Eskimos took sole possession of first place in the Canadian Football League with a 37-26 victory over the B.C. Lions on Friday.
The Eskimos remained the only undefeated team in the league, improving their record to 5-0. The Lions dropped to 4-2, with both of their losses coming against the Eskimos.
Edmonton didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard, as a 65-yard passi -
Former Hydro boss withdraws reward offer for missing Aussie hiker Sophie Dowsley
via vancouversun.comFormer B.C. Hydro CEO Jessica McDonald has withdrawn her offer of a $10,000 reward for the safe return of missing Australian hiker Sophie Dowsley, citing safety concerns.
Dowsley, a B.C. Hydro worker, and her Canadian partner Greg Tiffin, a B.C. Hydro contractor, went missing near Harrison Hot Springs on July 8.
Tiffin’s body was discovered July 18 near a waterfall at Statlu Lake, one week after the pair were reported missing. The RCMP underwater recovery team failed to find Dowsley and po -
Opinion: It's time for a rethink on taxing housing wealth
via vancouversun.comThe City of Vancouver’s latest round of housing-policy announcements, geared at opening up single, detached zones to a small amount of infill density, quadrupling housing targets for purpose-built rental homes at piloting a new affordable rental model is welcome news.
The new policies, combined with Canada’s first Empty Homes Tax, proposed short-term rental regulations and other recent action demonstrate a municipal urgency and willingness to experiment that other communities would b -
Opinion: Horgan must follow Barrett’s example on Massey Bridge
via vancouversun.comWhen Dave Barrett led the NDP to victory and became premier in September 1972, Vancouver was in the midst of a freeway revolt. East Vancouver and Chinatown residents had united against the planned downtown freeway and third crossing to the North Shore. Today, NDP Premier John Horgan faces a similar controversy over the proposal to replace the Massey Tunnel with a 10-lane bridge.
Barrett could have gone for half-measures and tried to sell a more modest freeway into the downtown, combined with mod -
Natural gas demand growing worldwide
via vancouversun.comAs governments grapple with how to balance their books and Canadians wonder where the next wave of middle-class jobs might percolate from, consider a recent report from the International Energy Agency (IEA). In it, massive worldwide demand for natural gas is profiled. The report, Gas 2017, contains useful nuggets for energy-rich Canada.
The release is particularly timely, given the sudden cancellation of Petronas’ planned $36-billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminal in British C -
Letters: ICBC is unnecessary
via vancouversun.comRe: Huge ICBC rate hikes loom without reforms: Report, July 22.
A leaked 203-page Ernst & Young report claims to require drastic measures and a 30-per-cent rate hike in order to keep ICBC operating.
They could have saved 202 pages. On one page, the report could have stated that the solution to B.C.’s auto-insurance problem would be to turn auto insurance over to private insurance companies.
A number of necessities of life are supplied by private industry with no shortages or -
Editorial: Gov't can change perception that it's anti-development
via vancouversun.comIt would be unfair to say Malaysia’s state-owned oil and gas company Petronas pulled the plug on its proposed $36-billion LNG plant this week because B.C. elected an NDP government. But it would be naive to claim it wasn’t a factor in the decision.
The reason was clearly not natural-gas prices, which were recently quoted at US$3.09 per million BTU, up from $2.79 a year ago. The price for natural gas was coming off a decade-low in 2012 when Petronas spent US$5 billion to buy Calgary-b -
Editorial: B.C. sends bad vibes to business
via vancouversun.comIt would be unfair to say Malaysia’s state-owned oil and gas company Petronas pulled the plug on its proposed $36 billion LNG plant this week because B.C. elected an NDP government. But it would be naive to claim it wasn’t a factor in the decision.
The reason was clearly not natural gas prices, which are well within their historic range.
Rather, Petronas faced interminable delays as both federal and provincial governments dawdled over tax and regulatory regimes and drawn-out environm -
Parallels between Federer and Spieth are notable

Vaughn Palmer: Short of any more miracles, Clark throws in the towel
via vancouversun.comVICTORIA — After the double debacle of the last few months, Christy Clark faced an uphill fight to be taken seriously as a candidate to return to the office of premier of B.C.
