B.C. Wildfires: Ranchers face devastating losses when they return home
via vancouversun.comKAMLOOPS — Ranchers in the centre of B.C.’s cattle country are facing “heartbreak” as they return to scorched fields, dead and displaced livestock and damaged infrastructure following weeks of wildfires.
Kevin Boon, general manager of the B.C. Cattlemen’s Association, said the process of tallying losses has just begun and could take some time because the extreme heat of the wildfires would leave little evidence of a carcass.
He said hundreds if not thousands of catt -

Lucky lemons: Herschel pops up in Deep Cove
via vancouversun.comSummertime and lemonade go together like, well, the beach and sand, sunscreen and sunglasses, beers and … well, you get the point.
So, it makes sense that the team behind the wildly popular accessories brand Herschel Supply would merge the two inspirations — sweet, tangy summertime drinks and a perfectly timed July opening — for their first pop-up shop in Deep Cove.

Trudeau, Horgan ‘progressive politicians’ in congenial first meeting
via vancouversun.comOTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and brand new B.C. Premier John Horgan bent over backwards to appear congenial after their first meeting Tuesday, avoiding any mention of their differing positions on expanding Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline.
The two leaders even showed up to their first face-to-face meeting in nearly identical blue suits, right down to their striped socks and matching shoes, prompting Trudeau to joke about their clear “compatibility.”

Ian Mulgrew: Efforts to reduce numbers of Aboriginals in jail failing
via vancouversun.comThe combined initiative by Parliament and the Supreme Court of Canada to reduce overrepresentation of Aboriginal peoples in prison with an Indigenous-discount strategy is failing badly.
In the mid-1990s when the Criminal Code was amended to have judges consider the specific circumstances of Aboriginal offenders, Indigenous peoples made up 16 per cent of those in custody.
By 2012, when the Supreme Court doubled down on the approach, that number had hit 28 per cent of those incarcerated where -
