Liberals attack NDP over ICBC following report leak
via vancouversun.comThe fingerpointing is underway in earnest after a leaked report warned B.C. motorists will get hit with auto insurance rate hikes of almost 30 per cent in the next two years if the government doesn’t massively overhaul ICBC’s basic insurance system.
The 203-page report by Ernst & Young says drastic measures are needed that could include capping payouts for pain and suffering for minor injuries, re-introducing photo radar, changing red-light cameras so they also catch speeders, bo -

Jason Botchford: Lions fans looking for a good time, whatever that means
via vancouversun.comThe B.C. Lions need another Brandon McKewan.
Actually, thousands more.
McKewan is a 22-year-old Lions fan who has been coming to Canadian Football League games since he was 12 apples high.
He loves the team, the stadium and his seats, especially because he paid just $200 for season tickets and they even let him buy those on a payment plan.
That’s quite the price point for the entertainment the Lions have been pumping out this season, a trend that continued to climb toward electric in Frida -
Makeover: Rediscovering a natural look
via vancouversun.comHeather Priban is a 35-year-0ld business development manager who was expecting a baby and wanted a style that would be less work and more stylish.
Heather has very long, thick and naturally wavy hair. It was previously lightened and her ends were looking brassy and feeling dry. She was tired of her long, unruly hair so we immediately removed several inches from her length. To soften her colour, I started by applying weave foils around the hair line and sprinkled a few through the top. I added a -
Weekend Poll: Minority Report? Or just the VPD being innovative?
via vancouversun.comThis week, the Vancouver Police Department announced it would introduce a new crime-prevention model that could stop crimes before they happen.
The VPD will be the first in Canada to use the computerized model, which allows officers to forecast the location of property crime and take measures to prevent it. The program was launched following a six-month pilot study last year that contributed to a substantial decrease in residential break-ins.The program uses analytics to identify areas where res -

Rate increase should prompt Canadians to reduce their debts
via vancouversun.comRe: Bank of Canada raises interest rate for first time in 7 years to 0.75%, July 12
Last Wednesday, the Bank of Canada announced its decision to increase its benchmark interest rate, from .5 to .75 per cent. With that, it now costs more to borrow money in Canada.
Canadians with variable rate mortgages and lines of credit will be impacted right away. As for the rest of us, we will feel it when we apply for credit or renew an existing credit obligation. Mortgages. Personal loans. Car loans. -
Indigenous relationship principles important for all Canadians
via vancouversun.comThe principles respecting the Government of Canada’s relationship with Indigenous peoples recently released by the federal government promise a way forward for Crown-Aboriginal relations. These principles lead me to reflect.
I began my legal career in 1982. As was known then, in most of British Columbia the ‘Indian Land Question’ remained unaddressed and assimilation efforts had scorched many communities. Lands and resources throughout the territories of the Indigenous p -
Editorial: The challenges facing the new cabinet
via vancouversun.comPremier John Horgan’s mostly fresh-faced gender-balanced cabinet begins it mandate under trial by fire. More than 40,000 British Columbians have been forced from their homes by 152 wildfires burning in B.C.’s interior. One of the incoming government’s first actions was to extend a provincial state of emergency and announce payments, drawn from a $100-million emergency wildfire fund, to evacuees of $600 a household for every 14 days they are unable to return home. The soci -
Change needed to rental law that works against seniors’ best interests
via vancouversun.comSpeaking in Victoria last month, B.C. NDP Leader John Horgan said his government would fix loopholes in the Residential Tenancy Act (RTA) that favour bad landlords and add supply to address the critical housing shortage for renters in the province. The B.C. Seniors Living Association (BCSLA) urges him to go even further and fix what we believe are RTA deficiencies that are forcing seniors out of their retirement communities.
Earlier this month, Abbeyfield House, a non-profit retirement home for -
Canada settled with Khadr to respect the rule of law
via vancouversun.comOver the past week, there has been much discussion about the $10.5-million settlement paid to Omar Khadr by the federal government.
Debate still rages over what Khadr did in 2002, along with how he suffered during his decade-long detention in the United States’ Guantanamo Bay prison.
In 2002, Canadian-born Khadr was a 15-year-old child soldier, who was taken by his father to Afghanistan to fight for the al-Qaida terrorist group. He was captured in July of that year after a firefight with A -

Trellis Seniors Services has been contracted by Vancouver Coastal Health to build and run the facility, while 108 beds at two government-run care homes in Sechelt are to close.

Does solar make sense in hydro country?

For all solar electricity’s advantages, in an environment where electricity is cheap and solar productivity is limited when you need it most, tapping into the sun’s power remains relatively expensive. And you are going to have to accept that you need B.C. Hydro’s help.
