Three days in Moscow
via vancouversun.com“People, not politics!” said the Russian Toronto Maple Leafs fan we met in Moscow, slapping my husband on the back. It was more proof that almost everything we’d heard about Moscow was wrong, as in, there’s not much to see, people don’t speak English and they aren’t partial to Westerners.
Moscow, the largest, coldest, northernmost city in Europe, wrapped us up in a big friendly bear hug. People went out of their way to point us in the right direction when we w -

via vancouversun.comThis week’s Conversation That Matters features Lisa Salazar, who helps us to understand the transgender spectrum.
What does it mean to be transgender?
The term is relatively new. It is also widely misunderstood. Many people believe trans or transgender is about sexual orientation rather than gender identity.
After decades of fighting the voices in her head, Lisa took on the long and challenging transition from her life as a man to the one she knew was her true self.

The Home Front: The new face of the work place

So observe interior designers like Sara Remocker of Vancouver design firm DIALOG and Rebecca MacDonald of Wayfair.ca Business.
“One thing that I’m going to say is pretty true about the younger generation [millennials] is the need for connection and face-to-face contact,” Remocker says. &l -
Douglas Todd: Opioids: Let's find out why the dead are mostly men
via vancouversun.comIs it because males are more likely to isolate themselves?
Is it because men, to deal with their suffering, are more inclined to consume alcohol and other drugs?
Is it because men, who do the most dangerous jobs, are much more likely to be seriously injured at work and to take opioids to kill the pain?
Dr. Paul Gross is among those who want to get to the bottom of why 15 of the 60 regular members of Vancouver’s Dude’s Club have in the past year died of fentanyl and other opioid overd -

How to use summer wines to enhance the flavours of your favourite dish
via vancouversun.com
Summer sipping calls for crisp whites, light-bodied reds, delicate rosés or bubbles, ideally served on a breezy, sun-splashed patio alongside good friends. But once the mercury rises, wine can go much further than the glass itself. It can also be easily incorporated into summertime cooking in several deliciously creative ways.
Wine has a way of enhancing the flavours of various ingredients, giving dishes added intensity and depth. It’s no wonder French chefs use it liberally, though -

Secondary suites aren’t secondary

If you could run a pharmacy in the basement of a single-family home, it’d probably help you pay down the mortgage. Ditto a car dealership, or a diner, or cocktail lounge. But you can’t. Not in Vancouver, or in most other Canadian cities. So why should you be allowed to run a ghost hotel in a basement zoned for stable residential housing?
Twice this month, The Vancouver Sun has published editorials critiquing Vancouver’s proposed short-term rental bylaw. An editorial called for -
