VICTORIA – Premier John Horgan announced Thursday his new government would follow through with a campaign promise to raise welfare and disability rates by $100 a month.

VANCOUVER — A program led by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority will examine how endangered Southern Resident killer whales respond to slower vessel speeds and reduced underwater noise in a key summer feeding area off southern British Columbia.
The port authority says 54 marine shipping companies have signed up to take part in the voluntary study between August and October in Haro Strait, the channel separating Vancouver Island from the San Juan Islands in Washington state.

Linkin Park lead singer Chester Bennington, who was slated to perform in Vancouver this fall, has committed suicide.
Bennington, who was 41, is most well known as the vocalist for Linkin Park, an American rock group that found fame following the 2000 release of their debut album Hybrid Theory. The band was among those that helped bring nu-metal and rap metal to mainstream radio in the early ’00s.

CALGARY — A popular Rocky Mountain resort in Banff National Park is being cleared of guests so that crews can fight a wildfire raging in the nearby backcountry.
Sunshine Village, a ski hill on the Alberta-B.C. boundary that offers summer hiking, is about 2 1/2 kilometres from the flames.
Sunshine spokeswoman Kendra Scurfield says about 150 people are staying at the resort’s hotel and they’ll have to leave by midday Friday.

Police have now adjusted the timeline of when a Burnaby teen girl left home, before later being found dead in the bushes of a nearby park hours later.
According to homicide investigators, Marissa Shen, 13, is believed to have left home around 6 p.m. on Tuesday. She was reported missing around 11:30 p.m., with her body being found just after 1 a.m. Wednesday on the southeast side of Burnaby’s Central Park.

ARMSTRONG — Part of an Armstrong home is in shambles and a driver has minor injuries after a transport truck sheared off the back deck of a house in an early morning crash.
RCMP say the truck lost control on Highway 97A when it hit a cow Thursday.
The truck veered off the highway and into the deck and rear of the house before stopping.

CARSON, Calif. — Tony Tchani scored in the 64th minute to give the Vancouver Whitecaps a 1-0 Major League Soccer victory over the L.A. Galaxy on Wednesday at the StubHub Center.

AGASSIZ — Police in the Fraser Valley say the body of a man has been found near Agassiz after a Vancouver couple was reported missing July 12.

A B.C. police watchdog is investigating after a man died after a struggle with the Prince George RCMP officers.
In a press release, the RCMP say the man was arrested Tuesday night after Mounties received a complaint that a man was “casing vehicles” in a Prince George parking lot.
