Metro Vancouver penalized trash haulers a total of $213,388 last year for delivering banned items such as electronic waste and cardboard to solid-waste facilities in the region.

Yes, take that, you big drag Sylvia Plath.

The advisory was put in effect on Tuesday due to elevated concentrations of fine particulate matter from the more 150 wildfires burning in B.C.’s Interior.
Metro Vancouver says air quality throughout the region has now improved as a result of stronger winds in advance of an incoming low pressure system.

Daphne Bramham: Is equity policy linked to NDP's precarious grip on power?
via vancouversun.com
It only took a century, but for the first time there are as many women as men in British Columbia’s cabinet.
The New Democrats were the first major party in the province’s history to have more female candidates than male. Although the electoral results suggest that voters are gender blind, the B.C. NDP’s two milestones didn’t happen because of its gender blindness.
It only happened because of a concerted and controversial effort — an equity policy that requires reti -

The NDP’s strong showing in V -

Cabinet ministers lauded by big union as the 'health dream team'

As former opposition health critics, they’ve been thorns in the side of numerous Liberal health ministers for years but now Health Minister Adrian Dix and Mental Health Minister Judy Darcy get their turn to reshape B.C.’s health care system.
As the NDP pledged during the election campaign, Premier John Horgan appointed two ministers of health (the Greens had pressed for three during the campaign). Dix will head a ministry that spent about $18 billion last year, while Darcy’s bu -

via vancouversun.com
Barely a day after he was named education minister, Rob Fleming is already racing against time.
Critics usually don’t become ministers of their portfolios, but in Fleming’s case — he has served as NDP education critic since 2013 — it could be an advantage.
“He’s going to be able to hit the ground running and that’s what we desperately need as we move towards September,” said B.C. Teachers’ Federation president Glen Hansman.

Style Q&A: Marina Moscone talks fashion design
via vancouversun.com
Marina Moscone admits she has always been obsessed with fashion.
But unlike most women, who typically segue their adolescent preoccupation with playing dress-up and reading fashion magazines into an appreciation of personal style, the Vancouver-raised creative turned to design. After studying at The New School’s Parsons School, Moscone made a name for herself in the fashion world — including a several-year stint as the design director at Peter Som — before creating her eponymou -
Vaughn Palmer: Darcy leads difficult job list in Horgan's tough cabinet
via vancouversun.com
VICTORIA — For all the pent-up excitement released at the cabinet swearing-in Tuesday, there was no overlooking how Premier John Horgan handed out some hugely difficult assignments to the first NDP ministers to hold office in 16 years.
None greater than the one given to Judy Darcy, as Horgan himself conceded in talking to reporters for his first media conference as premier.
It falls to Darcy to establish the stand-alone ministry of mental health and addiction services that the New Dem -

In the fire zone: Horsefly 'safest place,' but residents still nervous
via vancouversun.com
HORSEFLY — For the time being, this small community is a safe haven for its 800 or so residents just outside the eastern edge of a red-hot wildfire evacuation zone in the Cariboo region.
Even though the people are in a rare Cariboo community not on an evacuation alert or under an evacuation order, theirs is — temporarily at least — a strange existence.
They can leave, but they are not allowed back in.
The only authorized exit route — a one-way trip — is through the -
Katrine Conroy takes on difficult child and family cabinet post
via vancouversun.com
Katrine Conroy, a power engineer and former early childhood educator representing Kootenay West, will take the challenging helm of the Ministry of Children and Family Development in B.C.’s new NDP government.
Conroy served three terms as MLA before being re-elected in May.
Advocates lobbied the Liberal government for years to invest more into child protection services, and that intensified following a series of high-profile deaths of young people just before or after they aged out of care. -
