Remembering Liu Xiaobo
via vancouversun.com
As a noted intellectual leader who refused to leave China after the June 4, 1989 Tiananmen Massacre, Liu Xiaobo had since been imprisoned three times. In late December 2009, he again was sentenced to serve an 11-year prison term. His “crime” was his role as one of the initiators of China’s “Charter 08” inspired by the Czech dissidents’ “Charter 77” and his commitment to pushing for democratic reforms on the basis of China’s own constitution. -
Letters: Khadr owes Canada an apology

Re: Most oppose Khadr deal: poll; 71% say Liberals should have fought lawsuit, John Ivison column, July 11
What I find fascinating is that in all of the hand-wringing over whether Trudeau “had a choice,” no one ponders the fact that Omar Khadr is the one who clearly had a choice: He could have chosen not to sue the Government of Canada for $20 million.
If I were a prospective employer of Mr. Khadr, or a new neighbour or casual acquaintance, I would be moved much more by a guy who ack -
The charm of Vancouver Island
via vancouversun.com
We read a lot about staycations or stay at home in B.C. holidays and with our ever shrinking Canadian dollar, I decided I would follow the trend and spend a few weeks up and down Vancouver Island.
I should also explain I have children on the Island so I was able to freeload with them for a night here and there.
I started off in beautiful Qualicum Beach, the more I visit Qualicum the more I think it is one of the most beautiful town in British Columbia. I happened to be there when St -
Young burn survivors gather for comfort, good times at B.C. burn camp
via vancouversun.com
Emily Stass, of Nelson, and Nazira Collins of East Vancouver are both 11, and they share a special bond. They are survivors of serious burns in childhood, but it’s not the scars that bond them, it’s their shared exuberance and love of life.
The girls were part of a gathering Sunday at Ambleside Park in West Vancouver to kick off this week’s burn camp in Brackendale, sponsored by the B.C. Professional Fire Fighters.
“Everyone has so much fun,” said Nazira, who -
Surrey and Chilliwack open reception centres for fire evacuees
via vancouversun.com
Two reception centres have opened in the Lower Mainland for evacuees fleeing the wildfires burning in the B.C. Interior.
Close to 70 people had come into the Chilliwack reception centre as of noon Sunday. The centre opened late Saturday as a response to the Williams Lake evacuation, which has forced thousands of people out of their homes.
“Many of them are in shock and really devastated about the situation they find themselves in,” said Chilliwack Mayor Sharon Gaetz -

ALEXANDRIA — At the Moffat Ranch, built in 1883, Christina Moffat and Sean Gilkerson are keeping a close eye on the skyline and the weather as more wind and possibly lightning was forecast for Sunday.
In the southwest sky a huge cloud formation mixed with smoke was a dramatic sight.
About 30 kilometres south of the ranch, at about 3 p.m., waves of thunder rattled the air and lightning flashed.
Several communities in the Cariboo, including Williams Lake and Quesnel, have been evacuated -
Rob Shaw: Wildfires change political dynamics for NDP
via vancouversun.com
VICTORIA — John Horgan will be sworn in as B.C.’s 36th premier on Tuesday, a celebratory occasion for New Democrats who’ve waited 16 long years to return to power.
But the wildfires raging through the province are likely to dampen the mood, and will serve to provide the new premier with a timely lesson in the value of bipartisanship as he looks to form a cabinet that will be lacking in rural representation.
New Democrats are going to need to lean heavily upon several B.C. Liber -
Ryan Express keeps rolling, wins fourth straight Fort Langley Half
via vancouversun.com
FORT LANGLEY — There is a statue of Sir James Douglas outside the wooden gates of this village’s national historic site.
If they ever want to “modernize” the former fur-trading epicentre, they might consider adding one of “gold collector” Ryan Prachnau at the corner of Hudson Bay Street and Mary Avenue.
For the fourth consecutive July, the quiet and modest Abbotsford runner won the Peninsula Runners’ Fort Langley Half Marathon.

Tallio Day 5: A plea changes from 'not guilty' to 'guilty'
via vancouversun.com
After Phillip Tallio’s purported confession to an RCMP officer was ruled inadmissible at his 1983 trial in Prince Rupert, only one piece of evidence remained that directly implicated the Bella Coola teen in the murder of a young girl, according to the prosecutor who helped put him behind bars.
That evidence was incriminating statements Tallio reportedly made to Dr. Robert Pos, then psychiatrist-in-chief at the Forensic Psychiatric Institute in Port Coquitlam.
Phillip James Tallio as a teen -
Agriculture vs. industry: Land-use battle brewing in Abbotsford
via vancouversun.com
How much land can Abbotsford propose to remove from the Agricultural Land Reserve before its “city in the country” slogan no longer fits?
In advance of a public hearing Monday night, opponents of a city-led proposal to remove 115 parcels from the ALR to make way for industrial growth are questioning council’s commitment to food security.
“The model we’re using to anticipate future agriculture land needs is based on the past,” said environmentalist John Vissers -
